dwarf Posted July 28, 2013 Posted July 28, 2013 Aren't the newer models supposed to be more reliable? I have a super slim and I don't know what it is, but it just seems very compact and durable and something that won't let me down. I've cursed it now, of course.
Sheikah Posted July 28, 2013 Posted July 28, 2013 Aren't the newer models supposed to be more reliable? I have a super slim and I don't know what it is, but it just seems very compact and durable and something that won't let me down. I've cursed it now, of course. Yes, it's only the fat models that really have this problem. The thermal paste they used in the fat systems was not the best, which led to a loss of paste over time. The paste's job is to dissipate heat, so when it starts to be lost it results in overheating. The YLOD essentially occurs when overheating causes the solder balls connected to the underneath of the graphics and processor chips to either crack or melt, resulting in a short circuit. Hence, once the YLOD has happened you can't just repair it by replacing the thermal paste. It's usually the graphics chip balls to blame. Really though, it hasn't happened to me in 7 years of constant use (since launch), so you'll probably be fine if you have an older model @S\.C\.G.
Happenstance Posted July 28, 2013 Posted July 28, 2013 Yeah ive got a fat 80gb and apart from having to replace the blu ray laser its running fine. Its been a long generation so im happy with how its done considering how much more can go wrong these days.
Sheikah Posted July 28, 2013 Posted July 28, 2013 My 40Gb fat PS3 is also making loud fan noises pretty much all the time. I think I'm going to open it up in a few days and apply some of that thermal paste. Will report how it goes and comment on the difficulty of doing this if people are interested? Thanks for the above link, Sheikah. Out of interest, how did you clean the dust from the inside of your console? Compressed air? A vacuum cleaner on a low setting, lol. Got it all out. I recommend a decent thermal compound like Arctic Silver or the stuff made by coolermaster.
Rowan Posted July 31, 2013 Posted July 31, 2013 Heads up NBA 2k13 showed up for free on the PSN Store. It's a glitch so might be rectified soon... https://store.sonyentertainmentnetwork.com/#!/en-gb/games/nba-2k13/cid=EP1001-NPEB01200_00-NBA2K13DIGITAL00

NBA is only supposed to be free in the middle east.
Happenstance Posted July 31, 2013 Posted July 31, 2013 Its a really good game as well, I got a copy in the Steam sale and have been playing loads of the career mode.
drahkon Posted July 31, 2013 Posted July 31, 2013 Awesome. Thanks Downloading now. Only about 1billion hours left -.-
Tales Posted August 1, 2013 Posted August 1, 2013 Alright @Tales if you think you'll forget I'll give you a prod. It seems wonderful, definitely something I'll replay, had to tear myself away from it for a little while. Finally added you :p
bryanee Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 God damn, you cant remap the buttons for Mafia 2. I hate using the triggers to shoot.
dwarf Posted August 3, 2013 Posted August 3, 2013 It's not really my kind of game but I might download Dragon's Crown at some point, looks fun: http://uk.ign.com/articles/2013/07/31/dragons-crown-review
Tales Posted August 3, 2013 Posted August 3, 2013 (edited) Just started Spec Ops. I don't play shooting games like CoD or Battlefield because shooting just to shoot doesn't interest me. A story to go along with it and it gets much more interesting. I quite like the "sci fi" version of Dubai. Very interesting starting point. This alone can excuse anything the game throws at me later. Still early in the campaign(ch 6) I think this will be one of many games I would never pick up for 1£ but I play it to check out the PS+ release and end up enjoying it. I have never played Mafia before, let alone knowing what genre it is. Can't really say if I have played NFS before. I have always seen it as the definition of a racing game, but never actually played any of them. Looking forward to trying. Without PS+ I wouldn't know Just Cause and Sleeping Dogs even existed, let alone bother to check it out. What a great service. Please tell me you have finished Kingdoms of Amalur :p Edited August 3, 2013 by Tales
Magnus Posted August 3, 2013 Posted August 3, 2013 I hated Spec Ops. Yes, okay, narratively it does some interesting things, but the gameplay is so bland and repetitive.
Cube Posted August 3, 2013 Posted August 3, 2013 I have never played Mafia before, let alone knowing what genre it is. Can't really say if I have played NFS before. I have always seen it as the definition of a racing game, but never actually played any of them. Looking forward to trying. The thing about Need for Speed is that it's actually one of the most diverse franchises out there. When people say "they're all the same" they probably haven't even looked of them. Need for Speed is essentially a brand name which holds different franchises. ProStreet, Undercover, Shift, Nitro, World, Hot Pursuit, The Run and Most Wanted are very different games. Shift got its own sequel.
Hero-of-Time Posted August 8, 2013 Posted August 8, 2013 Puppeteer demo incoming. A demo for Sony Japan's Puppeteer will be heading to the EU PlayStation Network later this month, and it'll be available first for PlayStation Plus subscribers. Announced a couple of months ago - but not dated - Sony Japan will be "packing loads of content into the demo" for the Puppeteer, which will be exclusively available for PS Plus punters to download on August 21st. Regular non-PlayStation Plus PSN users will be able to pick up the Puppeteer demo from the EU Store a week later on August 28th, ahead of the game's launch on September 13th. A demo for the US has yet to be confirmed, but is likely.
Happenstance Posted August 8, 2013 Posted August 8, 2013 I should really look to renew my PS+ subscription, im pretty sure it runs out soonish.
Rowan Posted August 11, 2013 Posted August 11, 2013 Yesterday I was playing PES and there was an incident where the PS3 (launch slim) skipped frames. Today as soon as a match ended it switched itself off and the console had a flashing red light. I managed to switch it back on after spamming the power button but is this the beginning of the end of it?
S.C.G Posted August 12, 2013 Posted August 12, 2013 (edited) My launch model NTSC PS3 has been making really loud fan noises most of the time it's on for the past few months at least, I figure it's now time for me to buy a Slim model (not super slim) so that I can keep playing PS3 games without worrying and so that I don't make it YLOD as I still have some NTSC PS2 games that I'd like to play on it. I really don't feel like opening it up atm, if I'm honest I don't want to buy a new PS3 but I have had this one since 2007, that's pretty good going surely? ----------------------------------------------------------- Annnnnd... I've taken the plunge, ordered a 'New' PS3 slim 320 GB - apparently only taken out of the box to photograph - for £150, it seemed like a good deal being that the Slim is nicer than the rather cheap looking super-slim, plus they are most likely getting harder to find new now so it makes sense being that I will have at least 3 or 4 'Tales of...' games to play through plus a handful of other titles. I've heard that transferring everything to a new system is simple enough too, all you need is a standard ethernet cable, the latest firmware on both machines, change a few settings and you're away with the transfer. Hopefully everything will be ok now and I'll be able to enjoy my PS3 games for a while longer. Edited August 12, 2013 by S.C.G

dwarf Posted August 14, 2013 Posted August 14, 2013 That's all well and good, but are there any deals on Worms content?
Shorty Posted August 15, 2013 Posted August 15, 2013 Some of those are barely deals :p £37 for Transformers? I paid £29 at launch for the disk version....
Happenstance Posted August 15, 2013 Posted August 15, 2013 I really hope those high starting prices go when we move over to the PS4
S.C.G Posted August 15, 2013 Posted August 15, 2013 I really hope those high starting prices go when we move over to the PS4 They might as well lower the prices, otherwise what's the point? Especially for multiformat/arcade game releases, if they overcharge on those then most people will just buy them on Steam where it's cheaper. As for the PS4 exclusive games, it's anyone's guess but I would like to hope that they will be keeping prices in-check. --------------------------------------- I got my PS3 original slim today, definitely seems new which is good, will report back later when hopefully the system transfer will be complete.
Nintendo Fan Posted August 15, 2013 Posted August 15, 2013 (edited) So my PS3 has finally arrived (my first Sony console evah!) It's a pre owned from Game £149.99 PS3 Slim 320HD it came with Uncharted 3. I did order Tales of Xillia and Graces F but they've not been dispatched yet Such a huge library of games, I'm looking forward to the God of War series, always wanted to play it but i never had a chance even on ps2. Well now's the time! I'll dive straight into uncharted 3 and see what the fuss was all about. edit: Ni no Kuni, how could i forget i must get it Edited August 15, 2013 by Nintendo Fan
