flameboy Posted July 10, 2013 Posted July 10, 2013 Replaced the laser on my PS3 but unfortunately now for some reason the drive has stopped accepting disks at all. I think its the motor but dont really understand why it would go right as im sorting the laser. Im hoping its somehow just something ive done that can be fixed here and now. I hope someone somewhere can help you dude. Worse time for it to fail out.
Tales Posted July 13, 2013 Posted July 13, 2013 Sucks how you can't download patches in the background. My Internet connection isn't that reliable and does drop out everynow and then for a few seconds. Which isn't a problem as I just get a notification of the disconnection(or it had an error and logged out or something) and then I assume it just connects and logs back on by itself, I never do anything. But if it happens during the 3GB patch it stops the download alltogether. Is it harmful to harddrive to try over and over? It takes me around 2-3 hours to download it. Fun, three hours of download and the connection dies at 90%.
flameboy Posted July 13, 2013 Posted July 13, 2013 Fun, three hours of download and the connection dies at 90%. Yeah I was updating battlefield 3 and it got stuck at 89% and died such a pain the the Arse.
Tales Posted July 13, 2013 Posted July 13, 2013 Is the Battlefield patch just as big? I have no interest in the genre itself, so I may just skip it altogether.
flameboy Posted July 13, 2013 Posted July 13, 2013 Is the Battlefield patch just as big? I have no interest in the genre itself, so I may just skip it altogether. Its 2 and a halfish gigs . I'm not all that big a fan but for 5ish hours its summit to play and add to the list of beaten games!
Sheikah Posted July 14, 2013 Posted July 14, 2013 So my insanely used launch phat PS3 had gotten to the point where the fan switched to the loudest setting for most of the time it was on, some googling indicated that it probably wouldn't be long before it would YLOD. So I used this series of video guides to disassemble the PS3 completely, clean it out, and most importantly add new thermal paste. What a difference, it's now pretty much silent again. It's actually really satisfying to take it apart and made me appreciate how well engineered it is. The thermal paste had gone bone dry and mostly disappeared though, definitely needed a redo.
Rowan Posted July 15, 2013 Posted July 15, 2013 Reminds me of when I had to put Carlube oil on our PS2 to make the disc drive work again:D. While it's great that there are DIY fixes for game consoles it does make me hesitant in putting a preorder down for PS4 and maybe just wait to see how reliable it is.
Deathjam Posted July 15, 2013 Posted July 15, 2013 Ive noticed that the speed of downloads on PSN to be pretty poor, is this normal all around? If using wireless then yes. Wired connection should improve things.
Happenstance Posted July 17, 2013 Posted July 17, 2013 Thank God! The second laser I ordered for my PS3 worked perfectly so I can actually play games again and not have to buy myself a whole new one.
nightwolf Posted July 17, 2013 Posted July 17, 2013 Noob question. Do the games that come 'free' with PlayStation plus change every month? If so, when is the next date?
Happenstance Posted July 17, 2013 Posted July 17, 2013 Yep they do but if you have download them once, or even just started then cancelled the download then you can access them anytime for free as long as you are still a PS+ member. Speaking of the new games, they were announced today: Leaving PS Plus in July/August: 31st July: Battlefield 3 31st July: Catherine 31st July: Malicious 31st July: Ninja Gaiden Sigma Plus 31st July: Unit 13 Entering PS Plus in July/August: 31st July: Need for Speed: Most Wanted 31st July: Mafia 2 31st July: Spec Ops: The Line 31st July: Lego Lord of the Rings 31st July: When Vikings Attack!
bryanee Posted July 17, 2013 Posted July 17, 2013 (edited) If using wireless then yes. Wired connection should improve things. The wireless connection bloody sucked on my phat, much better on the second version of the PS3 (slim). DL speeds are easily on par with the 360 right now. edit - I've been meaning to buy NFS for ages but I haven't been able to so its very nice to see I'll have it for bugger all at the end of the month. flameboy Posted July 17, 2013 Posted July 17, 2013 That is absolutely insane....but wait guys 360 owners got Assassins Creed 2!
Cube Posted July 17, 2013 Posted July 17, 2013 Extremely disappointing. I was really looking forward to DmC and Little King's Story. Instead we get very disappointing racer, a dreadful sandbox game, a supposedly terrible port of a LEGO game, some other Vita thing and Spec Ops. Spec Ops is brilliant, but I already have it.
Daft Posted July 17, 2013 Posted July 17, 2013 Isn't DmC and LKS meant to be next month? I was super annoyed that Battlefield 3 wasn't on that list...and then I realised it was on Plus this month and have now picked it up off the web store and sent it to download on my PS3. Today is a good day.
Magnus Posted July 17, 2013 Posted July 17, 2013 I was really only interested in Spec Ops, so I'm happy. The Vita version of Little King's Story looks so soulless compared to the charming Wii version, so they can keep it, as far as I'm concerned.
Tales Posted July 17, 2013 Posted July 17, 2013 (edited) For quite a long time my ps3 has made this sometimes loud sound, not sure how to describe it, like a "rrrrrrrrrrrr" sound if you know what I mean. I think it happens more often if I play a disc based game. Just thought I'd finally ask if it means anything. Also suddenly today the left analog stick decided to stop working. It seems to only reach if I move it in the direction of around 4-5 clockish. Internet tells me to buy new one but that costs a fortune. Right analog seems to have died too. They worked perfectly yesterday. L3 still works. Edited July 17, 2013 by Tales
Cube Posted July 17, 2013 Posted July 17, 2013 Sony will be shutting down the online servers for MAG, SOCOM: Confrontation, and SOCOM 4 on January 28, 2014.

If it's a fan going into overdrive that noise will become constant soon enough, and then the system might last a couple of weeks before yellow lighting on you. If you're lucky. The truth hurts.
Tales Posted July 17, 2013 Posted July 17, 2013 If it's a fan? I think the sound has been there for more than a year. .

Cube Posted July 18, 2013 Posted July 18, 2013 I'm a massive Criterion fan. The singleplayer was decent, but the online was seriously limited (compared to Burnout Paradise. Having to do events in groups was silly, there were no custom race options (choosing your route), there were very few challenges (and these had to be done as part of an event group). They could have done a lot more - I was expecting them to improve on Paradise's online formula, not to a half-arsed job of it. The main problem was that I got hyped up for "Burnout Paradise 2".
Tales Posted July 18, 2013 Posted July 18, 2013 So I am thinking of transferring the saves onto my 32 GB sd card in case it suddenly dies of heart failure. I don't think it will though, it's been making noise since before AC3 and it's placed in an adequately cooled area, it's actually resting on a shaped plattern so it has air on all sides, but just in case I thought I'd backup the data. So, the sd card, do you know if they come in default FAT32? It is the same card I use for my 3DS, I think there's some music files in it too, I hope that isn't a problem. Thought I ask before I try so I don't screw anything up.
