Nintenchris Posted May 2, 2007 Posted May 2, 2007 GAME acquires Gamestation in £74 million deal Stunning takeover confirmed as GAME looks to dominate specialist sector. The £74 million deal comes just a week after the High Street retailer released an impressive set of financials and spoke of significant expansion. The total investment includes £300,000 which will be set aside for new stores, and an assumed working capital figure of £7.5 million. The financial statement also reveals that Gamestation’s gross assets total £60.9 million. Commenting on the acquisition, GAME chairman Peter Lewis said: "We are delighted to bring Gamestation into our portfolio and believe it has a strong future within the group. The Gamestation business is one we have long admired and is complementary to our existing business in terms of both store portfolio and target customer." "By investing in both brands we will further enhance the group's retail strategy while continuing to deliver and broaden our consumer reach. I am confident that this transaction will add considerable value to GAME and its shareholders over the coming years." http://www.mcvuk.com/news/26856/GAME-acquires-Gamestation-in-74-million-deal Ahh crap... Gamestation rocked but i bet its gonna be all change when Game start changing stuff
Serebii Posted May 2, 2007 Posted May 2, 2007 Damn. They have a monopoly going on. They just need to buy the Electric Company and the Waterworks...not to mention the Hotels on Park Lane
Kav Posted May 2, 2007 Posted May 2, 2007 I hope Gamestation keeps to it's style of being a DECENT videogame store!
Strider Posted May 2, 2007 Posted May 2, 2007 Hmm, trade-in prices will suck now. Well prices in general will suck now. Oh well, only time will tell.
Ramar Posted May 2, 2007 Posted May 2, 2007 At least we've still got internet shops for our bargains. The world hasn't ended just yet.
Cube Posted May 2, 2007 Posted May 2, 2007 Does this mean that places will have 3 GAME stores (1 former EB Games, 1 former GameStation, 1 GAME) now? Edit: OK, not for now....it may happen eventually, though
Mr. Bananagrabber Posted May 2, 2007 Posted May 2, 2007 People still buy things in shops? I can understand if you don't own a credit card, but why not get things cheaper and delivered to your door?

Cube Posted May 2, 2007 Posted May 2, 2007 People still buy things in shops? I can understand if you don't own a credit card, but why not get things cheaper and delivered to your door? Because a large amount of people still don't like online shopping, plus impusle buys, and until recently (and still with some Wii games) it's cheaper for me to buy in GAME with student discount. Anyway, I wonder if GAME will get rid of the new stock in GameStation, and turn it solely into a 2nd-Hand shop (I mean, they already seem to be getting bogged down by the 2nd hand stuff), and keep GAME for the new stuff.
Shorty Posted May 2, 2007 Posted May 2, 2007 Buying things in the shops also has the advantage of instant gratification. I like ordering online but I hate the wait for deliveries >.<
Kav Posted May 2, 2007 Posted May 2, 2007 I shop in Gamestation, I could go online or to Tesco's (for example) and get games a little cheaper, but I prefer to pay the extra couple £'s and go to Gamestation... the reason? The staff! My local Gamestation is great, I know the staff, we have great banter and whenever I go in, regardless of whether I'm purchasing or not, we have a quick game on the console they've got set up... and usually end up in some big debate over some game! It's that reason why I shop there, I find it more appealing than buying online or at other stores!
Guest Jordan Posted May 2, 2007 Posted May 2, 2007 So, GAME now own all three major players in the market: Themselves, Gameplay.com and now Gamestation. *sigh*
Ten10 Posted May 2, 2007 Posted May 2, 2007 So blockbuster sold them eh? Well the company is slowly going into the ground anyway. I really hope that gamestations don't become games. Because that would mean in my town centre there will be two games just across from each other. Also I always found GS to have better deals than game. So this could be sad news indeed.
blender Posted May 2, 2007 Posted May 2, 2007 I'm going to open up a game store. I will only hire hot girls like in hooters..

My local (er...Sheffield) GAME is like that.....GameStation think they know more about games than be "You want ALttP? get Zelda: Collectors Edition" "It doesn't have ALttP....I own the Collectors Edition" "Yes, it DOES have ALttP. Do you want to buy it?". urgh.
Kav Posted May 2, 2007 Posted May 2, 2007 I'm going to open up a game store. I will only hire hot girls like in hooters.. I'd shop there!
Smiter Posted May 2, 2007 Posted May 2, 2007 What the heck? Will there now only be ONE gaming chain in my local high street? This is ridiculous. Ah well, at least we can still use online shops. Amazon and Play.com FTW.
ThePigMarcher Posted May 2, 2007 Posted May 2, 2007 This really can't be good , so much for a competitive High Street marketplace. It's just as well that I have pretty much abandoned using the shops nowdays anyway.
Samdecahedron Posted May 2, 2007 Posted May 2, 2007 Great, well that's the end of gamestation. I feel sorry for it's employees, by the sound of things, they'll soon be forced to sell crap to customers or lose their jobs.
harribo Posted May 2, 2007 Posted May 2, 2007 Does this mean Gamestation will stop selling retro stuff and game related merchandise?
ReZourceman Posted May 2, 2007 Posted May 2, 2007 Oh FFS. What a load of bull shit. I wonder when we will start to see changes. I fucking hate GAME, they piss me off so much.
Rummy Posted May 2, 2007 Posted May 2, 2007 Fucking GAME, I hate them and their corporate monopolising ways! Bastards! Gamestation were a decent alternative, and as harribo pointed out they sold/sell a nice amount of retro stuff and merch, now game(screw your capital letters game!) are gonna wade in and bitch everything up. I hate you game, I hate you. Damn. They have a monopoly going on. They just need to buy the Electric Company and the Waterworks...not to mention the Hotels on Park Lane It's all about the greens my friend, control them and you have the REAL monopoly!
Ice9 Posted May 2, 2007 Posted May 2, 2007 Oh please don't let Gamestation stop selling '64 games! I've been slowly working my way to a collection..
