As you said, it was much more romantic when you wrote these letters every couple of weeks. (damn I'm out of thanks) Flameboy you're pretty much the embodiment of how chasing it can make it work. Good on you

Sexism against men can be just as bad, but in most instances it isn't. I think it's kind of belittling to fight this hard for men to be seen as equally put-down. It's just not true. Just about everyone in this thread is saying "It happens! Not to me, but it certainly happens!" I don't see the need for men to be so determined to have their fair share of whining. I mentioned yesterday that my experience of 'sexism' is that people assume I'm doing a woman's job -- now, that's sexist to women, because the implication in what I've experienced is "you are doing a lesser job, and a less important job." Aligning that to women means that most people (and this is including women who have said this sort of stuff to me) think women don't do the trickier jobs. Again, this is Australia, where it's acceptible to say wogs and lebs (but not aboriginies/ayer's rock). To reiterate; this isn't really being discriminated because I'm male, rather just being made to feel uneasy due to preconceived notions of gender roles. This is in no way the same thing as enduring wolf-whistles, groping, or anything Eenuh's mentioned. One thing though, @Hamishmash RE: the image of women and the use of sex to sell; that's kind of entangled with this but I think it's a separate issue. The role of sexuality is different for women and men (leaving aside the LGBTWFOFNGTJQAWPQM spectrum for now), and the role of perception and image is also different, and I don't really know how far into the tabula rasa we really have to take our magic markers to what may kind of be default elements of women/men. I'm going all wordy here because it's just not a straightforward topic. Essentially I agree with you sexism towards women is more occurant, and is worse to deal with than the potential sexism that men somewhere experience. The role of women in the media is a massive sprawling topic for elsewhere.

Currently rocking the UK-AUS thang and I do have to say that I don't think I would choose long-distance. It's basically not the same sort of relationship, and it does kind of erect some odd barriers that give the whole thing a bit of glamour that can disappear once the distance goes. There is a huge danger of falling in love with the freedom of the distance; tying up your heart to someone a thousand miles away gives you a kind of security, but at the same time you are free to live a life without dealing with some of teh grittier elements; compromises, arguments, clashes of timetables, friends vs. loved ones, etc. This also increases the specialness of when you are together, of course. Plus a LD relationship today is nothing like it would've been years ago - as Hamishmash and Eddie say, there's ample room for constant communication, which does make a difference. There are plenty of examples on these forums of success stories, but generally speaking I think it's fair to say that LD relationships are not the smartest.

^ Au contrare! I played the demo and wasn't feeling it. Instead I've hit up Dust: An Elysian Tail, Shadow Complex and lastly Hell Yeah!, for the metroidvania goodness. I've still got to finish the game on a higher difficulty for Dust: AET (zombie summoners taking FOREVER to kill with my current level) and need to reach level 50 with Shadow Complex (made it to 38 after 3 runs, including the 13%. I figure it'll be two more runs). Hell Yeah! is stage-based, and I'm only on stage 3 so far, but one thing is for sure is that the game is extremely busy, visually speaking. There's been high amounts of polish to the game, which adds to the 'charm' (not really charming as such, but certainly quirky) of the game. It's like someone crossed Wario Ware with Alien Hominid squeezed into the 'adventure platform' mould. Not sure if it's a case of style over substance yet - each area has been surprisingly distinct so far - but again, only on area 3.

Paedophiles, dirty old men and the age of consent
jayseven replied to Mr-Paul's topic in General Chit Chat
Yes he would still be guilty - you can't say he didn't sleep with a minor if he did. As to what a potential punishment should be? Not the same punishment as in the previous scenario. If someone enjoyed having sex with someone who was legally an adult but physically immature, is that ok? -
Paedophiles, dirty old men and the age of consent
jayseven replied to Mr-Paul's topic in General Chit Chat
Forgive me for not remembering my sources, but I am under the impression that post- and pre-pubescent minors are different cans of worms, morally and perhaps legally? It's never really a great thing to say, but I do think that it is worse for a pre-pubescent minor to be involved sexually with an adult. I also think that if there are two 15 year old post-pubescent teenagers who have been in a relationship for 4 years who finally decide that they know each other well enough to have sex... well that's ok. As for teh cases mentioned - it's not just whether a minor is ready for sex physically but it's the fact that an adult has a responsibility to not take advantage of a child. Regardless of the physical aspect there is the limitations on the experiences a youth has had in all other aspects of a relationship. It is extremely hard to find any other way to see these instances except that they are of adults taking advantage of children. If the 30 year old was so in love then do things above board, wait a few years, etc. I would class a paedophile as someone who is attracted to children. I would class children as pre-pubescent. I would not assimilate someone who unknowingly had sex with a minor with someone who lures, targets, grooms, predates, 'victimises' for sex. -
Who the fuck are Conaco Productions LLC and why the fuck are they blocking that show in my country? pppooooooo!

I have no issue whatsoever with the website in question. I experience sexism, bizarrely, rather often. My 'job' is 'au pair'. I'm a combination of a nanny and a housewife. I am also doing this in Australia (HAI DID I MENTUION AUSTRALIA YET... yes I know I mention it all the time but it's relevant!) ... which is a hugely sexist nation still. I experience sexism daily. And you know what I do. I GET THE FUCK OVER IT. (most days SOB SOB QWAI) I guess it's not the same kind of sexism? Mostly I suppose it's a gender-role based thing? People assume I'm doing "a woman's job." [this is to clarify further for gaggle]

@Rummy thanks - yeah I'd forgotten a tonne and gotten totally confused. Daniels was put in charge of their task force - as a lieutenant he doens't hold power anywhere at teh start -- or is he in charge of narcotics? I can't remember. I do remember that Prez is bounced from department to department, and that the two old boozers are not homicide (maybe traffic?). I remember Rawls now (I know it's a google away, but is it the same actor as Hank from Breaking Bad?) For everyone else; Daniels has to put together a team for the Barksdale/Wiretap case, and all the captains are basically told to give him their weakest staff, hence he gets offloaded with loads of shit. however, Grunch's character WAS a kick-ass detective in his day, buy pissed people off and got relegated to paperwork for the rest of his career. As to whether it's worth knowing about the grayscale morality of the guys on teh show - I would argue that it is. The show basically says that not all cops are good and not all drug dealers are bad - there are distinctly nasty pieces of work in the police force and forces of good on the street. I think if someone is identified as omar, for example, then we'll know that we have a strong candidate for a neutral, at the least :P

YES! FINALLY GOT MANAGER OF THE ROUND!! That's all I care about.

On the topic of dreams, I've had a recurring theme of children dying in mine. I'm aware that this allegedly signifies the death of childhood, and the oncoming need-to-grow-up (it's true! It's all true!). It's still incredibly depressing to wake up from what felt like 2 hours of Tom Hanks cradling a dead body on the death star and screaming whhhyyyyyy!? non-stop. Just plain depressing.

Yes - Lt. Daniels is in charge of McNulty and Bunk - McNulty 'stepped out of line' by, basically, telling a Judge about a bunch of shit which made the judge exert political pressure on McNulty's Boss's Boss's Boss's Boss to 'sort it out'. It trickles back down to Daniels, who is told by his boss (Captain Valchek was it? I can't honestly remember) to take care of 'it', but do it quietly and quickly. Daniels therefore has little manpower and little resources to use to chill out the political fire that's been started. Daniels is a very politically aware cop, whereas McNulty doesn't have a political bone in his body, but is a very good cop. mcNulty disobeys Daniels in the show by essentially going over his head and getting the wire-tap go-ahead from the DAs. Daniels does find this out, and tries to keep it a bit quiet from his boss (his boss is the one to really keep an eye on, for at the end everything kinda seems to go HIS way). Daniels also covers for his colleagues - at one point he helps a few cops 'get their story straight' before a potential internal affairs investigation. Srsly - you guys NEED to watch the show. It's unbelievably good.

First bit o' advice; don't be so hooked on it being a 'date'. The idea of a date is basically it's just you two doing something alone; no others to distract you from getting to know each other -- getting to see if you like each other. Stemming from that; if there's something you think'd be fun for the both of you, then ask her if she wants to do that with you. Make sure you have a specific time and date, and make sure it's not something that she might not like at all whatsoever. Similarly, if she declines then don't assume it's over - if she says she is busy then she is either actually busy or politely saying no. Rule of thumb here is to ask twice and if she declines twice then the ball's in her court.

Indeed! I am interested in knowing what this 'flaw'/'mistake' was. I have no idea what sort of context to expect it to be in... -
I'm not entirely sure the number is a code in itself, to be honest. It'd be too difficult to keep all messages within the 10char range whilst still carrying information.
-
For those who haven't seen the show I'll skip trying to define the blurred morality and just sum up the mobile numbers; The Wire is literally about phone-tapping. Before they can get the green-light to a wire-tap on some dude's phones they need to prove that the wire is needed; they get the evidence they need from cracking coded messages sent on pagers. Various members of the nefarious party own pagers - with pager numbers - but also would send each other messages coded as a pager number. There's one part in the show where the police, having cloned the pagers so they get a copy of all messages, get a message something like 5555-911-666 -- which essentially tells the recipant that the police are on their way. Supergrunch's character worked on the team that cracked the code. Anyone else have any more numbers? We can use them to decipher whether the one in the write-up is a coded message or even just grunch's number.

Best of luck to you oddy! I remember seeing bits of your [old] house, in the middle of a work-in-progresss. The fact that you've ACTUALLY FINISHED the project and been able to move on to a new one is, in itself, fantastic. I applaud your motivation to do so in the midst of family/wife/kids
