Monopolyman Posted April 16, 2008 Posted April 16, 2008 Shine a Light It was a Scorsese film about the Rolling Stones, so it was practically impossible for me to hate this film, so yeah, the 'rock-umentry' was great. The first 15 minutes was just Scorsese and the stones just planning the concert, which was actually one of the best parts, but the greatest moment was when Bud White came to to sing 'Champagne and Reefer', I mean, man, what a voice. If I'm being honest though, the old footage parts that occasionally inter-cut the gig bored me a little, and I would have liked to have them play 'You Can't Always Get What You Want' or 'Let it Loose', but still... 8.5/10
Oxigen_Waste Posted April 16, 2008 Posted April 16, 2008 Ok, so I finally got my hands on the Infernal Affairs Trilogy. I rewatched the first and watched the second one for the first time. I'll watch the third tomorrow. Infernal Affairs The second time I've seen it, a masterpiece of commercial cinema, extremely appealing, one of the best productions to ever come out of Hong-Kong, and, in my personal opinion, superior to Scorcese's The Departed. 8.5/10 Infernal Affairs II Whoa! Completely unexpected burst of character-driven cinema. It completely abandons the fast Hollywood-like style of the first film and works more on a character study level. A very good prequel to the original, not in the same cathegory as the first one, but still a very fine effort, with some lovely slow-paced action and minimalist production. A very worthy successor. 7.5/10 Now I'm affraid I'll get disappointed by the third one.
LazyBoy Posted April 16, 2008 Posted April 16, 2008 Now the third one, it's very different again. Trust me, you won't be disapointed.
D_prOdigy Posted April 16, 2008 Posted April 16, 2008 Memento - takes a little patience, but it's so innovative. A true triumph in storytelling. 9.5/10

And the only time he won was for a film that was based on a foreign film...
jayseven Posted April 16, 2008 Posted April 16, 2008 The GrindhousePlanet Terror and Death Proof as they were originally intended to be experience. In a cinema, late on a saturday night, complete with hilarious fake trailers like Machete and 'Don't' which had me in tears of laughter. You have to experience this in the cinema as it just won't be the same on a normal TV at home. 12/10 Excellent I've planned a trip to leeds for the 19th of May with some buddies to get to experience the same thing. Unfortunately it's right in the middle of exam period. If anyone here wants to go then let me know!
somme Posted April 16, 2008 Posted April 16, 2008 St. Trinians Never seen the old one. I don't like children...but thought this movie was pretty good. Uplifting and modern. 8/10
Solo Posted April 16, 2008 Posted April 16, 2008 Excellent I've planned a trip to leeds for the 19th of May with some buddies to get to experience the same thing. Unfortunately it's right in the middle of exam period. If anyone here wants to go then let me know! Seriously Grindhouse was the tits, it makes for a much greater experience when they're together, I was lucky to be in the US around April time to catch it. Wouldn't mind seeing it again though now I have the chance again. Weird thing was my two english friends and I were laughing our collective butts off at it yet the packed screen was barely chuckling, didn't they get it or something?
Paj! Posted April 16, 2008 Posted April 16, 2008 Planet Terror was one of the funniest films I've ever seen. I mean it's meant to be tongue-in-cheek but my friend and I's humour just made it so funny.
Oxigen_Waste Posted April 17, 2008 Posted April 17, 2008 [Rec] So... when the clock ticked at 11:30, I started heading towards the movie theater, the showing was at 00:00, I got there, I got my ticket, and I got into the room. I was alone, wich was precisely the point of going to see it at midnight on a wednesday. A big theater, sat in the best place in the whole room, and got ready for it. It's true, horror's been dying. In the last 10 years, we only got 4 decent horror movies. Ôdishon (courtesy of master Takashi Miike), Saw (if you can call it horror), The Descent (go england!) and A Tale Of Two Sisters (wich isn't exactly supposed to be horror, but eventually ends up being it). Today, these 4 became 5, as far as I'm concerned. Rec might just be the best Zombie Flick since Dawn Of The Dead. (I'm obviously not counting Shaun XD). Horror done right. Really right! 7.5/10

Cube Posted April 17, 2008 Posted April 17, 2008 Shrooms Quite rubbish and very predictable. 2/10 Requiem for a Dream I used someone else's USB stick to watch Shrooms on my 360. When Shrooms was over we checked out some random video file that was on it. It turned out to be Requiem for a Dream. It's a great film. The only bad thing was that I was constantly distracted - loads of the actors looked/sounded like I'd seen/heard them before but I couldn't put a name to them. I found it quite funny that the one who had a familiar voice turned out to be the Arbiter in Halo. 8/10

And now that you mention it, it's funny to imagine the arbiter as a sex predator. Anywho Infernal Affairs III That was unnecessary. It's not a bad movie... it's just a movie, it doesn't bring anything to the trilogy or to the overall story. It does nothing to improve the storyline. Two new characters spring out of nowhere, relationships are explored in a contradictory way to the first one, dementia is misplaced, I don't know, I just don't feel this has anything to offer. That being said, it's a nice film, just not a good one. The closure it provides is not that tasty. 5/10. So, as a trilogy, Infernal Affairs fails. The first one is near-perfect. The second one is a good rise and fall movie. And the third... just... is. So, in the end, I guess it would've been better as either a single feature or a duo. The second one actually brings the first one down a little, so... maybe it would've worked better as a stand-alone feature. Not that I can bad mouth the second one, it's a mighty fine movie. The third one just feels more like extra content than anything, really. Meh, who cares...
LazyBoy Posted April 17, 2008 Posted April 17, 2008 Well I'm happy you've seen it, difference of opinions I guess.
somme Posted April 17, 2008 Posted April 17, 2008 Requiem for a Dream is one of my favourite films. I can relate to the mother. I had a fridge that would often scream at me.
Cube Posted April 17, 2008 Posted April 17, 2008 Cube, you need to watch it again... It's way beyond 8/10. And now that you mention it, it's funny to imagine the arbiter as a sex predator. I'm not a fan of films that revolve around drugs. Plus it was a bit too arty for my likings.
somme Posted April 17, 2008 Posted April 17, 2008 Don't watch Spun then. I'd give that movie 9/10 as well.
BeerMonkey Posted April 17, 2008 Posted April 17, 2008 Futurama - Benders big score well this is just a extended episode put on dvd but still. quite poor really...wasnt all that funny and was VERY predictable. a fan of futurama just hope the other 3 feature length ones are better. 2/10
Oxigen_Waste Posted April 17, 2008 Posted April 17, 2008 Don't watch Spun then. I'd give that movie 9/10 as well. The big difference is... Spun sucks, Requiem For A Dream is a masterpiece. Get it?
Hem Posted April 17, 2008 Posted April 17, 2008 Vanilla Sky Wow, much better than I thought it was going to be. Can't wait to check out the original now. 7.5/10

killthenet Posted April 17, 2008 Posted April 17, 2008 Requiem For A Dream seems pretty dated now though. The MTV "hip-hop" montage style of editing seems shockingly dated when watching Requiem For A Dream and despite the highly intense final 15-minutes, the film is definately disappointing to watch now. When I first saw it, it quickly became one of my favourite films but its a film that gets worse with repeated viewings. Ellen Burstyn's performance is still fantastic though and the skill in the editing is still something to be admired, despite its aesthetic downfalls. I much prefer Pi and The Fountain nowadays.
ipaul Posted April 17, 2008 Posted April 17, 2008 The Truman Show - I like this film, thought it was quite flawed in some areas though. I love the whole concept of it, one man being constantly watched by everyone else, also thought it was very funny in parts. Also liked Jim Careys acting in this, a bit different to his usual stuff. However I thought the film felt a bit undecided as to what it wanted to be, the pacing seemed a little off in somepoints and the ending was a bit abrupt. 7/10
