Dog-amoto Posted December 13, 2015 Posted December 13, 2015 (edited) I'm sure we had a thread for this but can't find it. Oh well. First trailer, off screen but I'm sure a better one will surface soon. Edited December 13, 2015 by Dog-amoto

Dog-amoto Posted December 13, 2015 Author Posted December 13, 2015 Better trailer http://www.comicbookresources.com/article/watch-first-trailer-for-independence-day-resurgence Ah. Sooner than I thought Thanks, was looking for that.
bob Posted December 13, 2015 Posted December 13, 2015 Shall we just delete Dogamoto's posts and re-start the thread again?
Happenstance Posted December 13, 2015 Posted December 13, 2015 I think the movie looks like it could be good. My only real disappointment is: That the Earth is now more advanced after using the aliens technology. This is just a personal taste thing though as I think it absolutely makes sense for the story and the world they've built. I just tend to prefer this kind of stuff where its Earth weapons vs aliens. Things like the original movie, Stargate and the early seasons of SG1 for example.
DriftKaiser Posted December 13, 2015 Posted December 13, 2015 Accords to the WarOf1996 website, Will Smith's character died from testing the first Alien/Earth hybrid fighter in 2009.
gaggle64 Posted December 13, 2015 Posted December 13, 2015 (edited) I wasn't looking forward to this but this looks exactly like the sort of dumb spectacle I actually want to see in a cinema. (Official Youtube, for convenience) Looks like Xcom: The Movie. Edited December 13, 2015 by gaggle64
Shorty Posted December 14, 2015 Posted December 14, 2015 I like the XCOM angle. Shame Smith didn't come back, seems after a string of bad movies/decisions this should've been a no-brainer for him.
Agent Gibbs Posted December 14, 2015 Posted December 14, 2015 I like the XCOM angle. Shame Smith didn't come back, seems after a string of bad movies/decisions this should've been a no-brainer for him. He was probably worried it would be another bad movie since reboot/sequels so late after generally aren't good but from that Trailer it looks quite interesting, maybe he made the wrong call
Cube Posted December 14, 2015 Posted December 14, 2015 Shame Smith didn't come back, seems after a string of bad movies/decisions this should've been a no-brainer for him. I don't think that working with someone who made two decent films 20 years ago and nothing but complete garbage since then is a "no-brainer". This will be awful, but a lot of fun.
Retro_Link Posted December 14, 2015 Posted December 14, 2015 Didn't leave a good impression from the trailer. The first was such a classic at the time, with great spectacle, but in todays market it just looks like a very standard/average sci-fi flick. The huge alien ship looming down through the clouds CGI effect seems to have been done in so many films by now.

Julius Posted April 22, 2016 Posted April 22, 2016 Could. Not. Care. Any. Less. ABOUT THIS! And I mean, not even Will Smith. I'm getting Transformers vibes from the trailers, and that really isn't a good thing.
Falcon_BlizZACK Posted June 25, 2016 Posted June 25, 2016 Great sequel - just saw this on my own in the middle of VIP with no one on my row. ^^ I like how they expanded on a lot of things, and maintained the spirit of the first film. All the re-occurring characters were great.
Hero-of-Time Posted June 27, 2016 Posted June 27, 2016 Seen this on Friday with my mates. Utter garbage. Shame as I was looking forward to it. All of us came out of the movie hating it and spent then whole journey home slagging it off. The film lacks any of the charm and humour that the original had. They try to do various callbacks to the first film but they just don't pay off. There's a side story in the film that simply has no place being there and doesn't add anything to the film whatsoever. This film is a fine case of a sequel to a film that never needed to be made.
Daft Posted June 27, 2016 Posted June 27, 2016 I thought it was great. I really enjoyed it. I loved that the trailer basically featured only the first third of the film. The aliens got a bit more fleshing out and there was a bit of universe building. I like the returning characters, there was some nice development. I thought the sense of scale was great. I think I know the storyline that HoT is talking about and it's a fair criticism, but I kind of didn't mind it because it helped break up the "serious" bits. I kind of felt like the start of a new franchise. I can't wait to see what they do next. The whole thing kind of felt like an Arthur C. Clarke via Michael Bay. Moar please.
peterl0 Posted June 27, 2016 Posted June 27, 2016 For me it was in the so bad its good camp. Spent a lot of the film laughing at it, some of which was intended. I can take quite a bit in a film, but having a ship that big so close to both the moon and the planet would have some serious consequences for life on earth. Not to mention the fact that taking off would just be impossible. Oh, and 90 seconds from piercing the mantle of the earths core?

I mean, if you accepted the reality of the first film...where those ships are probably literally too big to exist and where the day is saved by a computer virus written in no time at all...then this film isn't really that much of a stretch. In fact I felt that the fights actually involved some form of strategy instead of a Deus Ex Machina; they had to bait the queen out and fuck her up. The only thing I didn't understand was why the giant ship just flew off at the end. Like, who took it? I was hoping the humans would retrofit it to be some kind of solar system defense platform.

There was a brief throw away line when talking with the sphere, that nobody had ever defeated a harvester queen before and if they did the other queens would just recall the ship....So a giant get of jail free card on dealing with that plant tick space ship As for the out of place storyline? are we talking about his Dad, the book? the kids? the oh look I'm in a random school bus coming into a battle for no reason? Or are we talking about the chickening out of making Brent Spinner and the other scientist lovers/love interests? because that bugged me more than anything! he looked after him for 20 years, brought him loads of flowers, there was genuine love there and in his death the thing he had to tell him was it was meant to be a sweater not a scarf? did a producer chicken out and fear the anti gay backlash in the US? that one exchange made that entire sub plot unneeded, if they were going to chicken out they should have cut the lot I enjoyed the movie, but it was as I expected it to be, cheesy, forced American patriotism everywhere and some crazy physics destroying events - sure was fun to watch though - doubt the sequel will get green lit
Daft Posted June 27, 2016 Posted June 27, 2016 Yep, that was the story line I was thinking of. I do remember a vague line about being called back. I didn't think it was overly American; there was a Chinese pilot (and her dad), an African Warlord, a British...alien expert, some drunk Irish people looking for gold... I get what you're saying about Brent Spinner. I didn't think the line was weird, I thought it was weird they didn't kiss. Ha

Yes they were to big to exist in the first film, which is fine, but this one was so big it would have had its own gravitational pull and would interfere with the planets own one. My disbelief suspender just could not stretch that far.
Daft Posted June 27, 2016 Posted June 27, 2016 Fair enough. I felt that they covered that for me with it having its own gravity bit. But yeah, it was incredibly OTT...and I loved it. Ha!
