@Zechs Merquise You say it's a ludicrous message, but is it hard to make the link?

On the one hand you have yourself; to me you're behaving pretty immaturely and being fiercely loyal of Nintendo. You tend to argue using Metacritic scores as an empirical measure of quality and complain about anti-Nintendo topics by making off topic comparisons to other consoles and their games. You bring up owning a PC and 360, but none of the topics you post in ever give the impression that you're really that into anything non-Nintendo.

Ronnie argues about games he has never played, pushing an agenda that the non-Nintendo consoles are full of soulless games and always has a finger on the button when negativity towards Nintendo arises.

Serebii is perhaps the most fiercely loyal and blinkered supporter of a company I have ever seen, but at least he's not nasty about it.

Then there's also Wii, who is pretty blinkered too, but I guess we can say at least he's probably aware of it and does know how not to defend Nintendo every turn.

In contrast, there are some people who I have seen adopt more consoles in the last couple of years have become more rounded characters on the forum. I have enjoyed talking to Flink as he plays through types of games he has never played before, and how he came to realise the areas in which Nintendo need to step up their game after he has sampled the competition.

Just to clear something up, there are obviously people here who only have Nintendo consoles and are absolutely fine with it and don't cause problems around here. But at the same time, I don't think it should be difficult to convince anyone that it makes sense that 'extremists' of any cause will most likely be the ones totally invested in that cause and fiercely rejecting of anything else.

I do actually wonder how others find so much time for gaming - especially with how much time many spend posting on here! I guess I'm relatively casual in my gaming, it's one of many hobbies instead of taking priority over anything else. I would love it if Nintendo had all the third parties, FIFA, etc. available, but I generally don't feel like I'm missing out on too much. Nintendo provide me with what I generally enjoy, and I will then play stuff on offer elsewhere if I have the time/money/desire for it.

This is where I eventually ended up myself and it's all cool :)

As an attempt to throw some balanced discussion into the mix, I started off 'properly' playing games on a Sega Megadrive which was the main console I owned until getting a GameBoy a few years later, I would still play SNES games over at my friends house at the time though, indeed a few years down the line I tried out the N64 and it wasn't until then that I decided that was the console I wanted so it transpired that one Christmas my grandparents very kindly purchased an N64 for our household when it was the more reasonable price of £99.98 with Goldeneye... I had the choice of either that or a Playstation at the time as well, needless to say at the time it was definitely the right choice. :)

But that doesn't mean that I ignored the Playstation, at that time a lot of my friends had one so I still got to experience some of the classics but while I owned an N64 I was then going back to buy past Nintendo machines including the NES/SNES while looking forward I've always picked the machine that most made sense to me. For me the Dreamcast I only got into when it was £50 with four games new... which then prompted me to buy a Saturn - fortunately it seemed to be a good time to build up a Saturn collection :heh: - before starting to save for a Nintendo Gamecube, then the Wii... with the original Xbox being added to my collection followed by a NTSC PS3 so I could then play all the PS1/2/3 games I had missed, then the Xbox 360 which almost brings me up to today.

I now own machines from all three companies Wii U/PS4/Xbox One with the New 3DS and original PSVita on the side, I've honestly never been happier as a gamer, while in a lot of cases I actually prefer to play retro games it's just really nice to be able to have that choice available; I consider myself fortunate enough to be able to afford these machines even though I don't do much outside of gaming which is my hobby hence the reason I can buy them in the first place, though these days even having all of the necessary hardware doesn't mean that I'm going to rush out and buy every game available - that would be a tall order for anyone - instead I've become more cautious with which games to buy if anything, which is a good thing based on how prices can plummet with certain titles no longer retaining much in the way of monetary value, so rather than have lots of them sitting on the shelf that I may not end up playing for a while I now choose to wait for price drops on certain games, this is why I tend to gravitate to retro quite a lot as I miss the days of saving up for that one cartridge based game and getting all that I could out of it. ::shrug:

From my perspective I've become a rather balanced gamer over time, I don't think of myself as any better or worse than anyone who chooses to just own consoles from one company or all of them; I just enjoy playing games... it's as simple as that.

the fact that you can't see that's literally all you've been going out of your way to do on here recently with Wii is mind blowing. I know it's been ruining threads for me.

Or we have differing tastes in games. Has nothing to do with double standards.
Sorry but I just don't believe you.

You play the likes of Mighty Switch Force don't you? and yet Velocity 2x doesn't even interest you?

I think that if the vast majority of the indie games listed were coming to WiiU you'd be creating threads about them, keeping up with them, and there on day 1 to buy them.

Nope not played that. Doesn't seem enticing to me.

This place man.

The one thing this thread has done is make me want to retrieve my SNES and N64 from my sister's house. I think after my final uni exams in May I will do so and play through the old Donkey Kong games in order, DKC1-3 and then DK64 :D There's nothing like the past...

...Sigh.

This isn't so much a Nintendo-bashing thread, as much as it is a topic about the opinion of a long-term forum member and Nintendo gamer.

Please, grow up.

Maybe changing the angle a bit - has your interest in general gaming increased or inclined over time? If so, why?

I have found that while my interest in the gaming industry as a whole tends to be pretty constant, I can get into a rut when it comes to actually playing the games and start becoming apathetic towards them. It usually takes a game coming along that I really love to kind of pull me out of it. First time I remember it happening was during the PS2/Xbox/GC era and Animal Crossing was the game that brought me back.

It was dropping last gen. Nintendo had all but abandoned the Wii. 360 and PS3 games were getting a bit samey for me. 3DS and Wii U revitalised it all for me.

I'd say my general interest in gaming hasn't declined, but my capacity to play has changed immensely, what with old TVs breaking down, moving into a bigger house (meaning old TVs don't go into my room anymore), and now the real possibility that I might need to emigrate.

Console gaming is becoming less and less of an option for me, which is why I went mostly PC-gaming. I'd get a portable console, but that's a tad out of my budget for now. No doubt I'll get a cheap 3DS in the future to catch up on everything.

So yeah, my interest in gaming hasn't really waned. If there are spells of time where I feel disinterested, it's because I'm playing the wrong games at the wrong time.

I've owned a single Ninty console and one handheld since the N64.

Because, quite frankly, the competition tends to be too expensive for me to realistically buy into.

Because I can expect Ninty to at least make games that I would enjoy, I go with them. It's safe, yes. But I can't afford to take risks.

That in no way means I dismiss the competition entirely, but not one game I know about on PS4/XBone make me think "I wish I had that console"

I'm not gonna spend that much money on a console that I might not even use.

And seeing as the non-Nintendo console games I enjoyed last gen were the LittleBigPlanet games and Heavy Rain, why take the chance?

Posted
Which is all very well and good. But why aren't they also on the WiiU for similar value? SOME indies are there, but those you mention I believe aren't - why not?

I feel I identify a lot with Flink generally, and his post kinda hits the nail for me too - only I do handheld a little bit too(ease) and don't have an alternative home console. My gaming has definitely gone down with time - but I don't think it's lack of interest. It's still very much a big part of me, otherwise I wouldn't be coming here every day. I do think I'm limited by time and money though - money to buy things, time to do things - socialising takes a lot away from what could be my gaming time. The fact I bought a WiiU stopped me getting a XBone or PS4. I know it comes up a lot(and I don't want it to be focus here) but social aspects to consoles such as good online, and importantly voice chat, will allow me to both game at the same time as socialising somewhat - thus doubling up my value for time. I've said it plenty times before, but I played what I'd consider a lot of Halo Reach and Halo 4 - the latter exclusively online pretty much, and that was all helped by the good online/social structure available to me.

I don't know why they're not there but it is irritating as a Nintendo fan to see a game be released on the 360 + PS3 plus the PS4 and XBone. It's irritating because I guess a lot of us assumed that once there was parity with the other systems, we'd get more games as a result of it. Sadly, this isn't the case. No Destiny on WiiU is a head-scratcher as it is the type of game that the WiiU needs.

I've previously associated a lot of my thoughts as being similar to yours. We are similar though, as we both bought the WiiU at roughly the same time.

Thats pretty much my angle - Plus I've always been incredibly frugile when it comes to buying games. Before the precision of online reviews etc, I remember spending probably up to an hour fussing about in game stores when Im about to buy (N64 era - good times).

I think Ocarina of Time was pretty much the root game that created this bond (and trust) with Nintendo. The gravity of the game just got me emotionally, even to the point of ensuring i have its soundtrack on every audio device I have owned...!

I would occasionally juggle with a PSOne (remember that beautiful white mini model?) - playing equally amazing games like, FF7, FF9, MGS, Wipeout etc - but I always traded back for an N64; I also believe the graphical capabilities of the 64 added to this bind.

To be honest, even while having a Nintendo system I was never one to have multiple games (probably never more than 4 - coming from a low-income, hard working class family) - So, with all the thousands of games that may have existed on other consoles, I still felt Nintendo's past offerings were good enough.

Perhaps if the likes of 1080, Rares stuff, Mario 64, Paper Mario, ISS 98 (and my favourite odd titles like: Command and Conquer 64, Wetrix, Pokemon Snap, Stadium, ISS64, Goeman, Hybrid Heaven, Extreme G etc) existed on the Wii U my personal decline in gaming would have been more constant - I've never been hard to please.

If this discussion does highlight failings with Nintendo's service - why is this such a taboo to discuss? You could say the N64's success was down to better 3rd party agreements (Konami, Rare), higher quality software and bigger Nintendo teams - identifying this forms part of a solution - not this "just deal with it", defensive knee-jerking.

(Just came to mind, but how is there no solid Pokemon game on Wii U yet?!)

Personally, I'd want Game Freak to sort out the issues the 3DS Pokemon games have at the moment (horrific frame rate, etc) before moving on to home console.

Come to think of it, apart from that badass elephant game they just announced, when was the last time Game Freak did a home console game?

I'm thinking it was the Mega Drive, but it can't be that far back, can it?

Didn't Game Freak do Stadium 1 & 2? That was a solid game, doesn't have to be the controversial full-blown RPG that @Serebii will wag his finger at. ;P

And at least Colisseum and Gale of Darkness made a bit of presence in the GC era.

They're sitting on a gold mine.

Nope, HAL.

I know, right!?

I do agree here. If they put the time and effort in, they could seriously do a game that fans (Including me) would eat up.

See, with my Pokemon addiction, having a game like would be more than enough to want to keep a Wii U around.

I think my movement away from Nintendo coincided with my growing appreciation of narratives in games. I absolutely love games that tell a story. I think that might have always been true since Link's Awakening and Majora's Mask are my two favourite Zelda games. Bar those few exception, Nintendo don't really do good narratives. Yeah, they're great with gameplay mechanics but I'm so rarely emotionally invested.

Xbox 360 was the first primary console that wasn't a Nintendo machine. BioShock was a revelation, it was so gripping. Portal, too. Even Halo, it's a fucking great love story about a boy and a girl (Master Chief and Halo). Then I moved on the PS3 and Uncharted was pretty good, kind of novel, and then - out of nowhere - Uncharted 2 was a narrative masterpiece; Saturday morning matinée gold. And there are so many wonderful stories out there. Has anyone here played Spec Ops: The Line? It looks and sounds so generic, something I'm certain someone like Serebii and Ronnie would dismiss but my God, it toyed with the medium, with the idea of agency in gaming and warped into a beautiful Heart of Darkness inspired story.

And I've got to say, indie games have allowed individuals and small teams to tell such great stories, too. Games like Fez, Limbo, Never Alone, Valiant Hearts, all so different and so emotive.

George RR Martins said something like you can live 1000 different lives through books and I look for - and find that - in games, too. But I can't really think of any recent games on the Wii U or 3DS that meant anything to me - nor the Wii, tbh. Whereas Far Cry 4, a game franchise I completely dismissed as iterative and uninteresting, absolutely engrossed me. What a fucking surprise. That's a beautiful thing. How exciting.

So, to answer your question, my interest hasn't increased or decreased, it's just become more refined. Give me a good story to get lost in.

Wow - you make me want to look into those games. : peace:

I meant Master Chief and Cortana, in regard to Halo. Oops! "Wake me when you need me." The feels every time.

Those are just a few off the top of my head. In terms of narrative, gaming has matured so much in the past five years. It's such an exciting area and it's often overlooked.

This. This so much.

And Spec Ops: The Line is the nuts. So glad that I found out about it and didn't let is pass by as just another generic shooter.
