General Gaming Sales/Charts Discussion

Dont really want to speak for @Rummy but I doubt when he asked for a source he wanted some graph which could have been mocked up by anyone. Some of the stuff you say probably is true but you very rarely actual provide proof, like we are all supposed to just take your word as gospel and acting like an arse telling us is based on stuff "ALL OVER THE INTERNET" doesnt help. Its not his job to look up information to confirm your point.

Third party support is a lost cause, what Nintendo need to do is try and lure them back for the next console

Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me. Fool me EVERY FUCKING GENERATION SINCE THE SNES, WHAT THE FUCK IS GOING ON!?

I would be surprised if anyone outside of the big hitters, that can take the inevitable lacklustre numbers, will bother with Nintendo going forward.

Yes :p But my point stands. It's a well known fact and I'm surprised I was confronted about it.

In fairness you do often claim things and never back them up, so its always good to ask :heh:

Very much this.

@Serebii no more dodging! Show me evidence of Nintendo on TEH QUAKES! Don't fluff this now. In the name of journalism, I compel you!

He doesn't need to back things up, he's a journalist. As he said on twitter earlier, he just 'knows'.

@Happenstance has hit it right on the head with the point I was making.

Yes :p But my point stands. It's a well known fact and I'm surprised I was confronted about it.

Well known fact? And by who? There's been many things throughout history that would have been 'well known facts' until completely disproved. I'm after a decent source, and that certainly doesn't qualify as such.

How much do they make on smaller titles? Like download/eShop stuff? I mean...they're smaller games at smaller prices but presumably also smaller costs; what do they make there? I really really think they need to moneyhat some indie/3rd parties for small downloadables with flash sales/reductions(ala Steam-esque) in conjunction with some sort of hard drive retailer partnership(due to 32GB not being ideally realistic in the current day and age).

It would be interesting if bigger studios essentially replicated the movie industry and help smaller devs release indie games (like Fox Searchlight helps with indie films for example). I know Curve do this, and probably others, but they're small in themselves.

If companies like EA offered to help release smaller titles it would really be a boon for the industry. Maybe some do, but the only one that I can think of is Sony. They seem to quite often financially, technically and pastorally help indie devs release their games.

As I've mentioned many times before, I've long held a strong disdain for Sony for a few reasons - but to be honest they really seem to be taking the best approach this gen. Seem to have learned from their mistakes and really done what needs to be done to have a successful console and get the market on board. Would anyone have seen this coming after how the PS3 launched? Doubtful imo!

(and on a side note I was always under the impression that contrary to what Serebii claims, Sony were heavily propped up by their gaming division at least during the PS2 era. I haven't a source to hand, but it was a well known fact at the time!)

I disagree.

Microsoft and Sony have spent the last generation building up their network to the point where it's like a social site. People have then made friends on these networks, put time into getting trophies and achievements and generally got used to how things work. This has made it a very easy way for both companies to get these gamers back into the fold for this next generation. People have invested time and money into these services and want to continue to do so.

Nintendo have no such online hook and as such it's easy for many gamers to dismiss them.

This post is actually perfect, serious props to you man.

Nintendo has clearly recognised this with their efforts to create and catch up with community eccentric features like Miiverse, but if they had been proactive with it the Wii U might not have been in such a bad way.

Aiming for casuals gets you.. well.. casuals. Fickle, will go for what's trendy. It's a good strategy, it opened up their market. But like you said, very little hook to keep them around.

Wii U sliding back into the sub 10k every so quickly.

Still slightly ahead of the GCN's equivalent week (11,142), or slightly behind if you go by Famitsu's Wii U figure (11,026) for this week, but the difference is a wash either way so meh; meaning that this drop for Wii U isn't unexpected.

Interestingly the 3DS is tracking similarily to the GBA on this equivalent 2003 week... (3DS via Famitsu = 50,044 - GBA = 59,201), though it did fall faster and harder...

UK sales estimates.

Throughout the past year I've been dropping some estimates here for the UK retail software market, and today I was finally able to piece together a full picture for calendar 2013. The results show some very interesting dynamics, as Nintendo's Wii U failed to catch on with the public while the more expensive new systems from Microsoft and Sony both found an easy win in their first couple of months.

To see this clearly, here is a figure showing the full year software unit sales, as estimated by figures reported in the UK trade magazine MCV UK.

I think they really need to start including digital purchases. What is this? 2004?

Heh, yeah. It'd also be interesting if they could have a separate count to factor in 'total downloads' (including unpaid for). Like when tons of people get Resogun included in Plus. If that didn't count as sales then it'd look like Resogun didn't do as well as it really would have.

Most my Vita games are bought off PSN. Even games like Tearaway.

Yep 3DS software sales are low when you look at how much hardware is sold. Amend the pricing already Nintendo.

I only have Animal Crossing, Luigi's Mansion and Pokemon Y for it (and I've completed none of them, now I think about it).

...and the 1989 Gameboy version of Tetris. As far as I'm concerned, this is still the killer app.

The title of this video might not seem as though it fits in with this thread, but give the video a watch. There is obviously talk about Psychonauts, but he also goes into some fundamental problems with the industry at the moment, and I actually think he's spot on with a lot of it.
