God of War: Ascension multiplayer confirmed

Sony has confirmed long-running speculation that the next God of War game has multiplayer.

God of War: Ascension has online and offline multiplayer battles for up to eight players. There are a variety of multiplayer modes, customisable avatar warriors, armour and weapon types to unlock. Eurogamer's Johnny Minkley saw it in action for a God of War: Ascension preview, published today.

Multiplayer "combines the brutal gameplay and large-scale battles that God of War is known for to create a competitive experience like never before", Sony said. According to game director Todd Pappy it's a "fresh twist" on competitive gaming.

But the game has single-player, too, this time with a "revamped" combat and weapon system, "promptless" mini-games and new puzzles. Sony mentioned "fluid, life-like characters, dynamic lighting effects, and world-changing scenarios".

Pappy told Eurogamer Ascension's campaign is "just a little bit shorter" than in previous God of War games. "We've mapped out everything and given time estimates. It'll be pretty damn close."

And lead combat designer Jason McDonald insisted that single-player has not suffered as a result of the addition of multiplayer. "We didn't want to sacrifice single-player for multiplayer, neither did we want to tack [the latter] on," he said. "We're definitely going full force with both."

As for the story, Ascension sees players assume the role of Kratos as he tries to break the blood oath that binds him to Ares. Since this is a prequel, we get to see a younger Kratos, one driven mad after being tricked into killing his wife and child. In the game Kratos "seeks to break his bond and gain the clarity to seek revenge on Ares for his part in the death of his family". Helping is his signature double-chained blades

Should this thread be re-named to God of War: Ascension now

I was thinking it might be cool to be scaling a Titan as you battle, or have them destroy the stage around you as you battle to mix it up and create new fighting areas etc...

Those screen shots however are about as uninspiring as levels come... couldn't they have waited and shown something better!

@Dan Dare, can you rename the thread please.

So it's a multiplayer game with a tacked on single player mode...

Fair play to them for finally giving the series the shakeup it needed, but still... not sure if want...

It's good to see them take the series in a different direction (and the multiplayer does have potential if it follows the kind of Monster Hunter style of progression rather than COD), but it seems so cynically designed; just the words "focus tested" make me cringe in disgust (yes I know that Sony extensively use focus testing in designing almost all of their games, it's the proud mention of it here that bothers me)

I guess we'll have to wait and see if it is just another COD alike (in that the game is designed around abusing operant conditioning to strongarm people into not selling their game)

I do like the shift in art direction though. Nice to finally have some bright colours! :D

:blank: Seriously? So instead of a maximum of 7-8 hours singleplayer we get 5? I remember beating every God Of War game (except the PSP ones which I've never played) between 5 and 8 hours.

I keep repeating myself but I hate how developers always assume that great single-player games need multiplayer.

Mass Effect, Assassins Creed...now God Of War.

Why not ditch multiplayer and instead make a GOW that has 15-20 hour singleplayer?

Weirdly enough, it's these games that people keep complaining about in terms of 'tacked on' multiplayer that, for me, have been some of the most innovative and interesting mp games this gen. AC, particularly, was a gem.

The Assassins Creed and Mass Effect multiplayers were both fantastic, and took nothing away from the single player.

I remember when I would play an N64/PS2 game and complain that the multiplayer felt "tacked on", that the main focus was clearly the singleplayer campaign and that the multiplayer was little more than an afterthought.

Now companies seem to put significant time into both and in the case of AC, give you near enough two great games in one. I can't see what the problem is!

It has quite the potential.

I might have to take that back.

It's kinda fun, yeah, but after a while it is nothing more than running around, beating others up with the GoW mechanic and after 100000 games of the franchise it's getting stale.

After a match you get XP, level up, buy new shit...all the tiring standards.

The multiplayer seems tacked on. There's always hope that the full game has more interesting aspects to online gaming, but I doubt that.

Now I'm even more disappointed that the singleplayer campaign will be even shorter...

The first GOW had the shortest campaign.

I played the beta but they reset my stats when going public. Its actually better than I expected. As you level up you gain abilities and performing certain targets also net you items. I think its pretty compelling for those who enjoy hack and slash games to get a multiplayer game finally. I am enjoying this more than say the other betas Sony have done on the PS3 last year (starhawk isnt saying much though ugh).

I think at worst its a good distraction.

Although you did empathise with him in the earlier games - this horrible thing had happened to his family and he wanted revenge - but in 3 he turns into a sovereign, king douchebag, just looking for the nearest thing to kill in the most vicious way possible, which I really loved.

That was very nice.

Quality trailer. Cheers

I was still rooting for him throughout all of the games. I couldn't wait to get my hands on Zeus and then when it happened....man was it so sweet! I hadn't felt that much satisfaction killing a boss since getting rid of Volgin in MGS3. :D
