flameboy
Sure we have had a thread about this in the past....but hell why not start a new one...god this game was soooooo good why have we never seen a sequel?! According to wikipedia it sold 2.5 million copies and was the fifth best selling gamecube game. Look at the list of top 20 and how many we have seen sequels or re-releases and its so bizarre that we havn't see one. Super Smash Bros. Melee (7.21 million)[1] Mario Kart: Double Dash (7 million approximately)[2] Super Mario Sunshine (5.9 million)[2] The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker (4.6 million)[2] Luigi's Mansion (2.639 million approximately: 2.19 million in US,[3] 348,918 in Japan,[4] 100,000 in UK)[5] Animal Crossing (2.321 million approximately: 1.68 million in US,[3] 641,300 in Japan)[4] Mario Party 4 (2.003 million approximately: 1.1 million in US,[3] 902,827 in Japan)[4] Metroid Prime (2 million)[6] Pokémon Colosseum (1.806 million approximately: 1.15 million in US,[3] 656,270 in Japan)[4] Sonic Adventure 2: Battle (1.732 million approximately: 1.44 million in US,[3] 192,186 in Japan,[4]100,000 in UK)[5] Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door (1.64 million approximately: 1.23 million in US,[3] 409,600 in Japan)[4] Resident Evil 4 (1.6 million)[7] Mario Party 5 (1.505 million approximately: 807,331 in US,[8] 697,462 in Japan)[4] Sonic Mega Collection (1.453 million approximately: 1.38 million in US,[3] 72,967 in Japan)[4] Resident Evil (1.35 million)[7] Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness (1.25 million)[9] Resident Evil Zero (1.25 million)[7] Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour (1.223 million approximately: 1.03 million in US,[3] 192,802 in Japan)[4] Super Mario Strikers (1.2 million)[9] Pikmin (1.18 million approximately: 680,000 in US,[10] 507,011 in Japan)[4] Also check out this video: http://www.gameinformer.com/b/features/archive/2011/03/26/replay-luigi-39-s-mansion.aspx This week we dust off a Gamecube title that didn't receive the credit it deserved, which is basically the titular protagonist's life story. This ghost-busting launch title defined the early Gamecube experience for many gamers, and polarized its audience in the process. We brought in some Luigi's Mansion newbies and veterans to sit down and settle the debate once and for all. Join Dan Ryckert, Andrew Reiner, and guest Sean Lowery, Game Informer's former lead programmer, as we guide Mario's green-garbed sibling through the early sections of the haunted mansion. Neither Dan Ryckert or myself had any prior experience with Luigi's Mansion before this episode, and our inexperience is a good counter balance to Reiner and Sean's misty-eyed nostalgia. Noses bounce, names are yelled, and cabinets are violated in this special episode of Replay. Stay tuned for a ludicrously fast-paced roulette. Note: This is Sean's first and only appearance on Replay before he departs from the Game Informer staff. I'd like to take the opportunity to thank our former lead programmer for starring on this week's episode, and for fixing the website after all the times we editors busted the thing. Good luck, Sean! I remember after I completed it I emailed Nintendo telling them how they should make a sequel to it where Luigi pursues ghost hunting as business and it could be like his business (riffing on ghostbusters even further) has run down or something and isn't doing well and Luigi is depressed at being relegated to 2nd tier to Mario but then the world needs Luigi has a ghost invasion rules the mushroom kingdom. Totally gonna replay this game soon!

Ville
Played this for the first time last Autumn, didn't like it. Surprisingly unpolished for a Nintendo game, and quite shallow too. Wouldn't recommend to anyone except collectors or just as a curiosity buy. Not enjoyable.
The Peeps
Do those figures count the bundle copies sold? It was one of two launch titles. It was a fantastic game though and I'd love to see a sequel. How have Nintendo brought out the Wii and neglected a Luigi's Mansion sequel?

mcj metroid
Ever hear about this crazy little thing? If you stand in an area for a certain amount of time.. A shadow appears of luigi... and looks like he's hanging himself. Was it a glitch or was the game intended to be darker?

Mario Strikers came out in 2005. I'm sure there was a choice between either Rogue Squadron or Luigi's Mansion on the gamecube. I didn't mean there were only 2 launch titles, just 2 bundle titles. It certainly was bundled at launch because it's the first game I got and I got the cube on day 1.

It still looks and controls beautifully.

Sorry I should have phrased myself better you were asking if the sales numbers included bundles I was saying I didn't know and meant that out of the top 20 Mario Strikers is the only one I knew was bundled at some point. Although Mario Kart was as well now I think back. I worked in retail back at the gamecube at launch and also got it day one and don't remember there being any bundles, are you sure it wasn't just a retailers bundle offer? Fierce_LiNk
It's great that people are loving the game now. However, there were so many at the time pointing out the linearity of it, along with the repetitiveness and the short life-span. I loved it. Thought it looked beautiful at the time, and it really felt like a huge step up from the N64. The music in the game was awesome. I had the theme tune as my ringtone back in the day. I think I will defintely replay this game this year for extra life, seems like a good game to save for something like that as can just play it right through from beginning to end. Eenuh
I thought this was a great game back then, and the visuals looked great. I had lots of fun with it. Didn't feel short to me as I played it in short bursts, so I didn't finish it in a day or two heh. Felt great to me. Not unpolished at all like Vile says. Maybe it hasn't aged well, I don't know, but I do know I enjoyed it back when it came out. A sequel would be lovely and would work quite well on the Wii. Eenuh
I watched the gameinformer replay link and still think it looks great. I meant more gameplay wise etc. It's how some people playing OoT for the first time now don't think it's such a great game. We played this when it came out, so we relate to how we felt playing it back then. I think for someone playing it for the first time now, it can look a bit dated? Maybe it was retailer specific. Question still stands though as to whether those figures include bundle copies or not because I'd be surprised if they didn't sell a lot more than that. It was a fantastic game and I'd love to see a re-release or something but that probably won't happen for another generation or two. Fused King
I've always longed for a sequel ever since I played this game in the late Gamecube days. Multiplayer could be SO DAMN GOOD in this game, be it online or not. Just 4 people online, walking through a big mansion trying to catch the most ghosts, trying to catch eachother, setting traps for one another, capturing the shine sprite, etc... Or even being a Boo/ghost and earning points by scaring those who hunt; the more elaborate scary situations you set up, the more points you get. I also share Flameboy's enthusiasm for Luigi exploring the ghost-catching business. However, seeing as Mario does all the noble, big important things, it could be nice to see Luigi do all the dodgy strange quests in the Mushroom Kingdom and elsewhere. Inspector Luigi Ghost Hunter Luigi Explorer Luigi (into the land of the native shy guy, and speaking of Shy Guys; these little fellas could fit in a whole new story with Luigi as the protagonist. ) Sailor Luigi (along with Explorer Luigi, Sailor Luigi sails to new lands for Mario to be a hero in:laughing:) PLUMBER LUIGI; apparently Mario doesn't want to embrace his initial job, so his sibling will. --------- I'm slightly frightened that we might see some sort of a port with extre features of this game on the 3DS; but I hope I'm wrong, for a sequel should be launched with Café Edited May 8, 2011 by Fused King
darksnowman
Lol, I did the ringtone thing too. I think the Nintendo mag published a few (Zelda's Lullaby as well) but the Luigi's Mansion one was by far the best. Luigi's Mansion is a top game and did really make the Gamecube seem like a huge step up from the N64. The lovely round graphics, the lighting effects and the way fabric would flap around was mindbogglingly good to look at. Thats before getting into the use of the analog shoulder buttons and joystick plus c-stick set up. The N64 was instantly rendered a thing of the past. I remember getting my GC on launch with Luigi's Mansion. I would have had it completed that weekend except I realised I was nearing the end so I wiped my file and started again, taking it even more slowly. Since then I've replayed it once or twice and tried to search out all the cheese. I swapped it with a friend for Rogue Squadron and my mind was blown all over again. I'd love even more for there to be a sequel I dunno I would have thought this as a prime title to be part of the "new play control" range which seemed to dry after the few initial releases (pikmin, pikmin 2, donkey kong jungle beat and mario tennis. oh guess the metroid games as well)

I'm more saying that what we might consider good ('cause we played it when it came out), might not be as great to someone who is playing that game for the first time years later (the game mechanics might have aged, the game might be considered too short/easy/slow, the graphics don't look like the ones from this generation etc.)
nekunando
A few weeks ago I really fancied playing Luigi's Mansion again as it is a game that I'm very fond of I haven't, however, satisfied this urge by actually going back to it yet.. but some day I will I actually suspect it may have aged better than Super Mario Sunshine which has somewhat lost its appeal I got ISS 2 along with my GC and subsequently bought Burnout and Super Monkey Ball the following week, with help from my brother. As much as I enjoyed these at the time, the / nando / of today would almost certainly have went for Luigi's Mansion at launch along with Wave Race: Blue Storm.. but then it is safe to say that they are a couple of my favourite GC games
Dog-amoto
Weird how I can still remember the first few games I bought for the 'cube, seeing as there was a severe lack of quality titles for the first year. Got this, Super Monkey Ball and Rogue Leader at launch (May 2002). Then I didn't buy anything until September (Resident Evil and Doshin The Giant, the latter of which was very disappointing)
