Think it's an over-reaction and a bit of misinformation. The mosque isn't actually at Ground Zero but several blocks away. This misinformation has spread Daily Mail style and has caused hatred, also Daily Mail style

If the opponents of this project truly succeed in preventing the construction of a mosque here, it will be the ultimate failing of ethnic sensitivity. Saying: "You muslims can't build your mosque here because muslim terrorists attacked this place" is effectively saying: "Muslims and muslim terrorists are one and the same thing."

Muslims should be allowed to show their faith in countries that they call home.

 

Yes i can see why this would cause offence to families of people lost on 9/11. But not all followers of the Islamic faith should be categorized / labeled as terrorists / extremists.

 

 

If Obama had said "We're going to build a temple for our many Jewish citizens to worship their faith" this backlash would be void. Again i know that the extremists involved in 9/11 were not of Jewish faith so the point is invalid. But you cant label a whole religion due to the acts of a select few.

I'm not being funny America, but the clues were always there?? He has confirmed in Audacity of hope that he is Christian, but if his father was raised Muslim then i would assume he'd lean towards the Muslim faith slightly in times when the religion gets bad publicity. Not to mention i'd imagine a large number of American citizens are of Islamic faith.

 

 

My father was raised a Muslim, I'm Atheist no religion was presented to me (Muslim dad / Christian Mum). But i know for a fact i feel terrible when people categarize the whole of the Muslim religion as terrorists, purely down to the fact that i know my dad. He'll be watching the evening news, a story that suicide bomb has gone off in Baghdad and he'll curse them. Many a time he's said they are not Muslim people.

I had a (kind of a racist) friend that insisted to me that Obama was a muslim.

 

I tried explaining.

 

I gave examples.

If they were building a mosque on Ground Zero itself, that would be a little rich, but, it's like 3 blocks away. What's the fuss about exactly? Oh, no, wait, it's right-wing Americans who are complaining - if it's not specifically for them, it's out to MAKE THEM ALL BECOME SOCIALIST COMMIE-NAZIS WHO WANT TO MURDER JESUS!!!

I have to be honest and say I think it's too soon. As Jimbob said, many Americans are still very much affected by 9/11 so I think the muslims are probably going to be in for a tough time.

It's also not actually a mosque, but a Muslim cultural centre to reach out to people of all faiths, an idea modeled on similar Jewish cultural centers in the area (incidentally, it has also received vocal support from the local Jewish community.)

 

The bottom line is some people are dumb and some politicians are soulless enough to exploit that fact and don't particularly care who they hurt in the process.

People are so easily lead by the media, it annoys me. So many people read these things and so many don't even realise they are having opinions spoon-fed to them and later spout them out as if they were their own.

 

Who cares what they build near where the twin towers used to be, they aren't there anymore! Who cares if there are Muslim's near it, what did a religion have to do with 9/11? it was a terrorist act.

Stopping them from building it would be unconstitutional. I love how the far right and far left in America are so hypocritical concerning the constitution, ignoring it when its not in their favour, but swearing by it if it is.

It's crazy just how much coverage this is getting over here. Personally I can understand why those who had people killed might get upset about it. But at the end of the day the vast majority of people are actually pretty decent, and the sooner everyone gets over these kind of hangups the better off we'll all be.

Obama never approved the Moqsue, let alone endorsed it. He simply stated by the laws that govern the country, they have the right to do so.

Love how so many Americans (though I doubt as high as 18%) think he's Muslim. That's even better than the socialist accusation. I swear Americans wouldn't know a real socialist if Tony Benn hit them in the face.

 

That bit on the Daily Show was more informative than a lot of the crap I have read about this. I don't like Islam (or any religion) but it seems to me now that a lot of fuss is being made over a nothing kind of project. I can understand why some people would be annoyed but the undertones of the campaign against this thing are truly repulsive.

I suppose it depends on how you look at it. He's backing the processes that govern the country and what each citizen is constitutionally allowed the right to do but it's not clear cut wether it's something he personally wants to happen and to be honest he's hardly going to come out and say it's a terrible idea.
