Serebii Posted January 3, 2011 Posted January 3, 2011 Has anybody been watching the sky? Saw the best meteor I've ever seen about 10 minutes ago. Was brighter than any star and streaked across a great portion of the sky. I'm going out again after Big fat quiz of year, It's cloudy as fuck here. I'm not happy
Jimbob Posted January 3, 2011 Author Posted January 3, 2011 It's cloudy here as well, because the weather forecasters lied to me. They lied. So instead, i am watching a meteor shower via the Youtube. Not as good as seeing one live, but it will suffice.
Dannyboy-the-Dane Posted January 3, 2011 Posted January 3, 2011 Jayseven, your explanation was perfectly fine.
MoogleViper Posted January 4, 2011 Posted January 4, 2011 I went out about midnight but it was cloudy. Shame I would have loved to have seen more.
Serebii Posted January 4, 2011 Posted January 4, 2011 Anyone catch the partial solar eclipse this morning?
Cube Posted January 4, 2011 Posted January 4, 2011 Anyone catch the partial solar eclipse this morning? I saw lots of clouds. Which is normal for whenever something interesting is happening in the sky.
Dan_Dare Posted January 4, 2011 Posted January 4, 2011 I heard on the radio earlier that there's actually a 'dark sky' park in Northern Scotland now- it's basically a special destination with markedly clear night skies without light pollution and so on where you can get your astronomy on. Quite a cool idea I thought.
Eenuh Posted January 4, 2011 Posted January 4, 2011 Wish I could've seen the eclipse but I was asleep in bed around that time I think. =P Here's some pictures though.
MoogleViper Posted January 4, 2011 Posted January 4, 2011 Wish I could've seen the eclipse but I was asleep in bed around that time I think. =P You and me both. (As in we were both in our own beds, not both in bed together)
Happenstance Posted January 4, 2011 Posted January 4, 2011 Oops, I forgot to watch tonights Stargazing Live
Grazza Posted March 6, 2011 Posted March 6, 2011 Don't miss the 700th episode of The Sky At Night, tonight at 11.25 on BBC1. Also of interest may be Wonders of the Universe, also tonight, at 9pm on BBC2.
tapedeck Posted March 6, 2011 Posted March 6, 2011 Wonders of the solar system was pretty good tonight. I was expecting Cox to come roaring out of the blocks yet it was a more sedate start. Inspirational stuff though when Cox talks about this moment in time we have.

ReZourceman Posted March 7, 2011 Posted March 7, 2011 Faaaaking hell. That programme was utterly immense. When he said there aren't enough atoms in the entire universe to count....the time...that it... God. Messed up.
Retro_Link Posted March 7, 2011 Posted March 7, 2011 I loved the concept of the wind being able to spontaneously build a sand castle! It actually made me feel a bit sad when he was talking about how one day the universe will inevitably die, and leave behind a vast expanse of absolutely nothing... nothing! I mean of course I've heard this before, but somehow he managed to hit it home. Life will have come to an end!... I mean seriously... WTF!!
Shorty Posted March 7, 2011 Posted March 7, 2011 If it's any consolation, you, everyone you know, your entire lineage and probably your entire species will most likely be dead before that happens. Unless it happens today, at 3.36pm GMT. Also, it's probably all happened before anyway.
Retro_Link Posted March 7, 2011 Posted March 7, 2011 If it's any consolation, you, everyone you know, your entire lineage and probably your entire species will most likely be dead before that happens.Well yes obviously, I'm not expecting to be sat on that very last cold star when it eventually burns out. :p It's just quite a humbling thought.
Cube Posted March 7, 2011 Posted March 7, 2011 Also, it's probably all happened before anyway. It'll probably happen again, too.

I mean of course I've heard this before, but somehow he managed to hit it home. Life will have come to an end!... I mean seriously... WTF!! I think it helps to remember that all these people, however clever, are still only humans positioned on Earth speculating. I'd love it if a UFO appeared, an alien got out and said "Brian, you're talking absolute rubbish!"

Dannyboy-the-Dane Posted March 7, 2011 Posted March 7, 2011 Dear God, look out the window! What a terrible time to run out of thanks! ... You know, with the world ending and all.
jayseven Posted March 7, 2011 Posted March 7, 2011 Luckily the universe cycled round to reconstructing our reality quick enough for the 6 o' clock news this time. Phew!
Jimbob Posted March 8, 2011 Author Posted March 8, 2011 700th ep of "The Sky at Night" is on tonight, shall be watching it.
Retro_Link Posted March 12, 2011 Posted March 12, 2011 (edited) Just to put it on everyones radar... there's gonna be a Supermoon on March 19th, which is when the Moon is at it's closest to the earth/appearing at it's biggest. Of course some people out there are linking it with the recent run of natural disasters, but I think the people properly in the know, realise it doesn't have that much of an effect... http://www.nasa.gov/topics/moonmars/features/supermoon.html Edited March 12, 2011 by Retro_Link
