Ike Posted January 8, 2011 Posted January 8, 2011 Not a single Tales game on the DS made it outside Japan... I'd be surprised if this changes with the 3DS, sad as it may be Tales of the Abyss got a US release so I'd say this one has a high chance, it's already translated after all.
Jamba Posted January 8, 2011 Posted January 8, 2011 Seeing as this was only a display to the public, no news was really going to come from this anyway. News is coming on the 19th as they've already said. All the weekend was, nothing more, nothing less. Yeah you have a point. But the list of suspicions I have about the systems ability to deliver are growing. If it wasn't for the games coming from Capcom I really wouldn't care right now. Japans game prices Japans software games list Hardware & Internal Software Japans Line-up Hands-on demos for the Japanese public 1. Bad news. 2. No that relevant to UK. 3. Really? I haven't seen anything that tells me much more about what it will be like to use the system. 4. Fairly bad news. 5. Not that much new being shown about functionality of the system.
Hero-of-Time Posted January 8, 2011 Posted January 8, 2011 Has anyone been able to confirm if the 3DS is region locked? It will be a nightmare if it is as I like to import handheld RPGs from yankee land as they get them quicker than us and sometimes we don't get them at all.
Dante Posted January 8, 2011 Author Posted January 8, 2011 Yeah you have a point. But the list of suspicions I have about the systems ability to deliver are growing. If it wasn't for the games coming from Capcom I really wouldn't care right now. 1. Bad news. 2. No that relevant to UK. 3. Really? I haven't seen anything that tells me much more about what it will be like to use the system. 4. Fairly bad news. 5. Not that much new being shown about functionality of the system. As ShadowV7 said this event is for the Japanese public and here is the information about the system. Nintendo also provided a final list of what's included when you buy the system. You'll find the following items in the box:Nintendo 3DS system Nintendo 3DS charging cradle Nintendo 3DS AC adapter Nintendo 3DS touch pen SD Memory Card (2 gigabytes) 6 AC Cards (for use with compatible software) Simple Start Guide Instruction Manual Warranty Card The system comes with a variety of software built in. These are among the included titles: Nintendo 3DS Camera Nintendo 3DS Sound Mii Studio Street Pass Mii Plaza (Surechigai Mii Hiroba) AR Games Activity Log (Omoide Kirokucho) Face Shooting (Kao Shooting) Most of these were introduced in September, but Nintendo 3DS Sound and Face Shooting are new. Nintendo 3DS Sound lets you edit and combine sounds that you've recorded with the system's microphone. You can store up to 180 10 second sound clips on an SD card. 3DS Sound is also used to play back music files from your SD Card. It also has Street Pass functionality, allowing you to see the popularity of songs amongst the people you pass by on the street. Face Shooting is a game that turns your friends' faces into enemies and your surroundings into stages. You start by taking a picture of a family member or friend. The program will judge the person's face, describing it as, for instance, "a young girl's face" or "an adult woman's face." The face will then appear in a shooting game. As the face approaches you, you have to throw balls it at to keep it away. The face's expressions will change as it approaches you. Nintendo's spec page also lists Nintendo Zone and Internet Browser as built in software/services. Nintendo will also be holding public events in US and Amsterdam on the 19th but on the 13-14th is when Nintendo is having a business meeting so that's when more business side of 3DS should be revealed.
Jamba Posted January 8, 2011 Posted January 8, 2011 Info on 3DS OK so Face Shooting and Sound are new to me but are going to last about 5 minutes. Everything else on there we knew already and the browser was just to be expected. Roll on 19th.... maybe we can find out then if all the teasing at E3 was justified. Will this be much more than a DSi with 3D functionality?
Burny Posted January 8, 2011 Posted January 8, 2011 Yeah you have a point. But the list of suspicions I have about the systems ability to deliver are growing. If it wasn't for the games coming from Capcom I really wouldn't care right now. I haven't seen anything that tells me much more about what it will be like to use the system. 4. Fairly bad news. 5. Not that much new being shown about functionality of the system. Fairly. Probably. Look ! Could be much worse. The stuff still in development is pretty impressive. It's about showing the demos to people who haven't been able to see them themselves, not for pumping out news. For that purpose, the event is pretty damn impressive. Overall, I find the lack of actual news a bit disappointing, too. But for it's purpose the event seems well planned and executed. Any doubts wether the overall OS and online system can deliver are justified though.
Cube Posted January 9, 2011 Posted January 9, 2011 OK so Face Shooting and Sound are new to me but are going to last about 5 minutes. Face Shooting is new. I'm pretty sure the Nintendo 3DS Sound has already been announced (and is basically a sound recorder and .acc player). Hopefully they add .mp3 support this time. This event is basically for the Japanese public to test out the games. It's not really a news event. Bomberman (New design for Bomberman?..better than the last redesign) Tiny screenshots (Boss Battle? and standard multiplayer)
Dante Posted January 9, 2011 Author Posted January 9, 2011 An adventure game like Bomberman 64 with multi-player. Street Fighter and Resident Evil soon.
Hero-of-Time Posted January 9, 2011 Posted January 9, 2011 Here's some great impressions from a Gaf member who went to the event. Just played SSFIV. It looked like all the characters were there, though the background scenes I saw for Historic Brewery and Exciting Street Scene were largely reduced in complexity from their console counterparts. Control was as expected, though reaching down to the d-pad was a bit of a stretch, making it a little awkward. The 3D effect worked, though you do have to take care to find the right 3D slider strength and the best place to keep your head relative to the screen. Twitching too far throws it off. I didn't quite get the perfect setting yet, so it was a little "off" in my eyes. The 3D effect definitely looks cool, but it's easy to screw up. If your settings aren't just right or the game pushes it too far, the illusion can be broken. I just played DOA, and at some points the camera angle can be such that it gets into a fence or wall and it juts out right at you in double-vision. The 3D really adds a lot to story scenes with a lot of depth, but isn't as noticeable in more 2D-style scenes, short of backgrounds. The dial-a-combo feature is pretty neat and will be useful for beginners, but it's not very practical to be scrolling through a long combo list in the heat of battle while your opponent wails on you. It's more of a button-mashy thing. As far as framerate goes, I didn't check SSFIV in-game, but switched back and forth on DOA and saw a bit of a change, as reported. The screen actually flickers a bit and seems to change brightness when transitioning between 2D and 3D. After getting a bit lost trying to find the right door to open in Biohazard Revelations, I managed to take out all of the tubeworm-headed zombies, even finishing with a couple minutes to spare for another run. This game handled 3D much better than DOA, with even the strongest 3D setting not being disconcerting. The strength definitely seems to be a per-game thing. There was no clipping through walls, with the camera getting properly guided around them. In short, it looked very good. That said, I've noticed myself slightly woozy after playing, something like getting up from a long movie or waking up in the morning. Again, it's important to get settings right and YMMV. The Naked Sample was the same as E3, but this was my first chance to see it in person. Jonson got a lot of things right with the 3D, but I found myself having to forcibly focus my eyes when the bee suddenly popped out right in front of me. There was some inconsistency in terms of the camera surface; dust particles, bridge ropes, and flowers appeared visibly closer than mud that splattered on the camera. Footage on display for Zelda, Pilotwings, Kid Icarus, and Steel Diver looked really good. My only complaint with Pilotwings and Icarus was that it seemed like there was way too much depth; 3D strength is not adjustable on the non-playable demos. When you're trying to look at specific things in the foreground and background at the same time, there was too much double-vision. It'd be hard to play like that. Zelda and Steel Diver looked perfect. Paper Mario and Mario Kart looked kind of ho-hum, and still need work. Star Fox looks very well-done, even if virtually identical to the N64 version. I just asked a Nintendo staff member whether the 3DS will be region-locked or not. While she stressed that there was no customer support offered for foreign games, importing wasn't recommended, and there may be technical problems that arise when attempting to do so, playback ability could not be guaranteed. When I pressed to see if that was on a per-publisher or per-title basis, she dodged by saying that such details couldn't be revealed until launch. So, it sounded to me like compatability may vary, but it's at your own risk. Then again, it could be completely locked, completely region-free, or a mess like 360. No clear answer yet. Kid Icarus is a bitch to play for lefties like myself. I wanted to try with my right thumb, but the attendant wouldn't let me. Maybe it'd control better, or maybe the input fidelity won't support it? Perhaps the original thumb nub is the best option. Anyways, I jacked it to hard right off the bat and was punished while inverting the Y input for flight stick control and adjusting to the control scheme. The game looks amazing, and should be one to watch. I'll just have to take a nub to an in-store display before committing. Face Shooting was kind of cute. You have to line up your eyes and mouth with the marks on the screen using the front-facing camera, which is kind of tricky, then look up at the lens before pressing A to take the shot. My own face then growled at me before flying in around me, posing as targets to shoot down. The main modes of attack appear to be breaking through the wall in front of you to fling debris your way, and kissing. Yeah, cute. If there's no physical wall, you get holes in mid-air. Face Shooting is built into the firmware. The 3D camera was kinda neat, seemed aimed at teenage girls who are big on photobooths. It simply takes two photos from the external cameras, and adjusting the 3D strength changes the image in no way but toggling with 2D, which displays only the right eye's image. The face merge feature seems to cut-and-paste the taker's picture onto the head of the subject, no morphing involved. It has a few different modes like adding special effects, pinhole, low lighting, and a "mystery" mode. It seems like a neat little distraction. Perhaps we'll start seeing more photography hobbyists take some interesting pictures. Okay, I take back what I said about Pilotwings earlier. Having had a chance to adjust the 3D strength and actually play it, Pilotwings is officially bad ass. Double vision is not an issue as I'd feared, given the right setting. I got to try missions for the jet pack, hang glider, and biplane. In each of them, you're given a course to fly through with target rings or platforms as appropriate. My favorite was the jet pak, as it most directly fulfills the dream of personal flight. Pilotwings is the most applicable use of 3D I've seen so far. Steel Diver was a neat little game. I was able to play in navigation and periscope modes. In navigation mode, you have a sideways view of your sub and its surrounding environment, and work the levers to propel your sub forward or backward, to submerge or dive. Torpedoes can be fired horizontally or vertically. It's fairly by-the-numbers. Periscope mode, however, uses the gyro function to have you turn your whole body with the system to rotate the periscope, just as with a real one. Then it's a matter of timing you torpedo shots ahead of the targets depending on their speed and distance. As far as 3D goes, it didn't come into play so much, but video footage showed a stormy ocean churning up some tall waves, which looked very nice in 3D. So, Zelda had 3 areas available: Kokiri Forest, Inside the Deku Tree, and the boss fight with Gohma. The 3D was very well done and the graphics were rather impressive for being an up-rezzed N64 port with new textures and models. There's not much to say about it, as we've all played Ocarina of Time several times before. In the last few moments before the event closed for the day, I did manage to get in a quick round of Winning Eleven 3DSoccer. The perspectives of the field were wide-ranging and seemed to be set based on the circumstances of the given play, providing some nice angles on the action. When the ball was airborne, you could tell right where it was in the air relative to the field and the players. Soccer isn't my cup of tea, but fans should be well-served.
Retro_Link Posted January 9, 2011 Posted January 9, 2011 (edited) Starfox looks brilliant!! That Boss battle in the Tank... Beautiful!! I'm now really pleased that I've never really played the game a great deal before! And Paper Mario, Resi, MGS, Mario Kart, Kid Icarus look AMAZING!! Edited January 9, 2011 by Retro_Link
Tellyn Posted January 9, 2011 Posted January 9, 2011 No one seems to have picked up on the 6 AR cards. What are they?
D_prOdigy Posted January 9, 2011 Posted January 9, 2011 No one seems to have picked up on the 6 AR cards. What are they? They're used for the pre-loaded augmented reality games
LostOverThere Posted January 10, 2011 Posted January 10, 2011 Not sure if this has been posted already. 3DS shipment for Japan this fiscal year (through March 31)•1.5 million 3DS shipment for North America, Europe and other territories (through March 31) •2.5 million Source
Ike Posted January 10, 2011 Posted January 10, 2011 Not sure if this has been posted already. Source Am I right in thinking that confirms it'll be out before March 31st then?
killer kirby Posted January 10, 2011 Posted January 10, 2011 Tales of the Abyss got a US release so I'd say this one has a high chance, it's already translated after all. Namco are idiots, never put faith in them when it comes to the tales series. Even if Abyss has had an english release before and is mostly translated.

Guy Posted January 10, 2011 Posted January 10, 2011 Ugh, stop getting excited, me. All Nintendo had to do was stick an analog stick on and remake some classic N64 games and here you are licking your lips. I thought we were over this. I can't deny I'm getting a bit excited for this thing. I dunno if I can resist.
yesteryeargames Posted January 10, 2011 Posted January 10, 2011 (edited) http://www.tudou.com/programs/view/EOxtvtV-JkQ/ link to the big video, why remove it nintendo usa ? hardly going to harm sales is it :p Edited January 10, 2011 by yesteryeargames

I ain't too fussed about the remakes, heck I really don't care about them at all, it's Paper Mario that I am most excited about more then anything. Plus now that the 3DS has the graphic capabilities, I hope to see Monster Hunter on it as well
Arnieboy Posted January 10, 2011 Posted January 10, 2011 I'm still pondering over whether i should preorder when it becomes available or if i should chance going to a shop to get one. Oh and as for Tales, even if it does get a US release the carts are region locked, pretty sure i read that somewhere.
