MoogleViper Posted October 6, 2009 Posted October 6, 2009 How much rice should I cook? I'm quite a big eater. For example last night I had about 175g of dry pasta, 500g of Lloyd Grossman sauce and a chicken breast? So how much rice should I cook for myself? And how much water should I put in? And I'll be having it with a 500g jar of curry (not decided which yet) and the remaining chicken breast if that makes a difference.

The general rule is half a mug is normal (for each half mug, you need one mug of water) - so, for a greedy bugger like you or me, 3/4 of a mug of rice and a mug and a half of water should do you nicely. If that sounds like not very much, remember rice expands...
Fierce_LiNk Posted October 6, 2009 Posted October 6, 2009 The general rule is half a mug is normal (for each half mug, you need one mug of water) - so, for a greedy bugger like you or me, 3/4 of a mug of rice and a mug and a half of water should do you nicely. If that sounds like not very much, remember rice expands... That's pretty much spot on. What I do is just pour rice into the bottom of the pan so that the bottom is covered, but only a few millimetres deep. Basically, blag it, haha. This reminds me of my first night at University, cooking for myself. I eagerly told my new housemate that I would cook him egg fried rice. I filled half the pan with rice, then the other half with water. An hour later, I was still there waiting for it to cook...then, in an effort to hide my fail, I tried to pour the water down the drain, but, as you can imagine, I almost clogged the drains with rice. God, I was such a n00b.
MoogleViper Posted October 6, 2009 Author Posted October 6, 2009 I know that much. I reckon I'll do a mug full. Doubt there'll be any left over but if so then lunch tomorrow. Plus the mug is quite small. On the bag of rice it says four parts water to one part rice, whereas everywhere on the internet says 2 to 1. /is confused. I've cooked rice before but it was ages ago.
Molly Posted October 6, 2009 Posted October 6, 2009 (edited) Moogle, I want to stroke your head in a motherly fashion. What Fish said. You won't need 500g of curry sauce for one person though, I'd have thought. Edit: Please don't :P Edited October 6, 2009 by Molly
MoogleViper Posted October 6, 2009 Author Posted October 6, 2009 Moogle, I want to stroke your head in a motherly fashion. Stroke away, stroke away. What Fish said. You won't need 500g of curry sauce for one person though, I'd have thought. But I use 500g of pasta sauce, is it not the same.
Dan_Dare Posted October 6, 2009 Posted October 6, 2009 'one cup' usually (NOT A MUG) with regards to water it depends on the method but here's my favourite: there should be as much water again as to high high the rice is. Bring that to the boil then turn your hob off. Cover the rice and leave it on the still hot (but off) hob. takes about 15 mins but the rice will steam, not boil. The result is a much nicer texture. oh and remember to wash your rice before you cook it to avoid a starchy mess.
Molly Posted October 6, 2009 Posted October 6, 2009 But I use 500g of pasta sauce, is it not the same.We use about 600g of pasta sauce to feed 4 people, so maybe you just like it saucy!
MoogleViper Posted October 6, 2009 Author Posted October 6, 2009 Just buy a Rustlers. I like my food to actually have taste and nutrients though.
EEVILMURRAY Posted October 6, 2009 Posted October 6, 2009 I like my food to actually have taste And you cook rice?
MoogleViper Posted October 6, 2009 Author Posted October 6, 2009 And you cook rice? I think the existing of this thread suggests otherwise. Besides I'll be having a curry sauce with it.
Ten10 Posted October 6, 2009 Posted October 6, 2009 Since your having it with a curry, add a lil bit of salt and turmeric.
Wesley Posted October 6, 2009 Posted October 6, 2009 I wish you luck Moogle. I have had many a time where me and my girlfriend have been eating a plate of curry cause and a few grains of rice or, the other way round. It's a hard balance to strike... one day, one day you will.
jayseven Posted October 6, 2009 Posted October 6, 2009 My method is an amalgamation of several people's noted above. - half-to-3/4 a mug of rice - just about cover with boiling water - When the rice starts showing inverted-slalom 'pockets', take off heat, cover and steam. The last part I have a 'perfect rice' tuppaware set which steams it and drains it too. As for sauce/meat - a whole jar of sauce for a whole pack of beef is fine, and mostly just depends on how long you're simmering it for.
Shorty Posted October 6, 2009 Posted October 6, 2009 So its just me that has a rice cooker with all the measurements engraved into the inside of the pot? Am I posh or something?
EEVILMURRAY Posted October 6, 2009 Posted October 6, 2009 Besides I'll be having a curry sauce with it. No reason why you couldn't add sauce to your Rustlers.
Raining_again Posted October 6, 2009 Posted October 6, 2009 So its just me that has a rice cooker with all the measurements engraved into the inside of the pot? Am I posh or something? Sorry short stuff, I think thats just you Usually half a decent sized mug per person. 3/4 if you are hungry. Don't do a whole mug, because that will probably kill you! (has had past experiences of making too much) on a somewhat related note: weightwatchers says a portion of spag is a 5p piece circle sized amount. that's like NOTHING. =(
Pyxis Posted October 6, 2009 Posted October 6, 2009 So its just me that has a rice cooker with all the measurements engraved into the inside of the pot? Am I posh or something? Nope, I also have a rice cooker since I am a fan of all things Chinese. I use one cup of water for every cup of rice with mine and it is always nice and fluffy after 15 minutes. The problem is that I have to use 3 small cups of rice in order to get it to the minimum level, meaning that I am left with too much! It's worth it though.
EEVILMURRAY Posted October 6, 2009 Posted October 6, 2009 Nope, I also have a rice cooker since I am a fan of all things Chinese. You eat sweet n' sour pork?
MoogleViper Posted October 6, 2009 Author Posted October 6, 2009 Ok so I did a full mug of rice and 2 and a half mugs of water. A whole chicken breast and a 500g jar of tikka massala. I managed to eat it all but I think I'll do a bit less next time. It went right to the edges of the plate and was piled about 2 inch high.
Pyxis Posted October 6, 2009 Posted October 6, 2009 You eat sweet n' sour pork? Ok, not everything and especially not food because I am a vegetarian. I think vegetarian Chinese food tends to be too low in protein for a person like me, but I do like rice.
