Similar but not the same. Wii Music does some thing COMPLETELY different within the music genre and I have no doubt whatsoever that Miaymoto will get his wish that in years to come, future musicians will credit Wii Music for getting them interested. My 3 year old newphew can now mimic all the instruments, knows what they sound like, and understands the concept of 'playing' tunes and timing. He also knows what an ocarina is! I didn't until 1998!!!

Surey that's contradictory? What exactly does it do that's "COMPLETELY different"?

EVERYTHING.

For a "game" I'd say it's pretty revolutionary.

Anyone can play it (and understand it). Instantly.

It veers away with the "simon" approach to music games.

There is no way to fail and this is made clear by "tutes" reinforcing creativity.

Everything is geared toward education. (Band styles/lessons/pitch/conducting/song selection and origins).

I'd say Wii Music is a landmark title. However, I also feel RB and GH are also landmark music titles. It does appear Nintendo have jumped on the music bandwagon somewhat but then again, they have such a different take on things that it's refreshing in itself. Even for musicians like myself, I'm delighted, astounded and appreciative of the educational and rewarding facets it offers aspiring musicians and, well, anyone interested in playing an instrument.

And although I've played GH a lot, I've never felt that with the series. Its goal-focused and (with difficulty levels) affords challenges which can be vast. Wii Music is a totally different kettle of fish. Both great in their own way. But totally different titles.

I think, subtly, Wii Music is a very impressionable, well-meaning title in a similar vein to Wii Fit.

Innovation... hmm, well obviously Nintendo. I don't like where they're innovating nowadays though, Wii Music was an absolute bore fest for me when I played it at Christmas and non of the other casual stuff takes my interest nowadays, albeit maybe it's just a phase.

I guess what really annoys me is that other then Galaxy most of the main franchises we know arn't being innovated or changed. Sure Metroid 3 had sparkly new controls but it was still Prime 1 and 2 in a different planet, Zelda has been the same since 1998, Smash Bro's, Animal Crossing all just repetitive type stuff now.

Sony innovating though? Home is cool and will be good eventually, not played LittleBigPlanet yet but looks cool. I'd rather see games like MAG and LittleBigPlanet as the direction of innovation though, it's cool what Nintendo are doing though, just of no interest to me.

Mirror's Edge is dammed amazing though... been hooked on that all weekend. Shame the HD console only deliver a few original experiences every year at retail. Plenty of gold on PSN though... echochrome <3.

Also at the trophey debate, the place I think trophies trump gamerscore for me is the platinums. To have an award for getting all the others sort of spurs me to try do everything and completely explore and master whatever games. I wouldn't do some of the bat shit insane challengers these games give you if it was for just 30 gamerpoints instead of ultimately getting the platinum.

Why isnt Microsoft in the thread title?

Barring the Virtual Boy and the GBA card scanner :wtf: , Nintendo has definately shaped the way we play games moreso than Sony or Microsoft could ever hope to. Their history simply cant be touched.

As for the Wii, i love the pointer and the remote speaker, both of which should and will be 'stolen' for future consoles.

As for Sony, we all know they are more adept at evolving and capitalizing on good ideas (or 'stealing' as it were). And is that such a bad thing really? As unique and different as the Wii is, i still prefer having the total package that is the PS3

lol .. they don't tend to be the best of mixes... although as I said there on-line console work is the best and first properly(blah blah nes blah blah dreamcast.. you know xbox did it properly)

wii music however is highly innovative i believe it;s the start of something new but quality wise.... no.. i;m not buying it.. think it's FAR too simplistic but the direction was there...

It's like I can see everything that can possibly go wrong with this thread layed out before me like tree branches.

Honestly, aside from LBP, which as said, isn't 100% from Sony, I can't see how they can even be considered original. In either hardware and software. Home? Animal Crossing, Miis, Second Life,... Not that it doesn't have original concepts here and there I suppose, so I guess some credit might be due as it will be something that in one way or another will be present in future consoles.

And as time goes by I disagree more and more that Galaxy didn't innovate. Maybe it's not as apparent or groundbreaking as Mario 64, but they finally managed to take the classic Mario 2D progression into 3D, something very few if any company at all accomplished with the 3D transition. Second, the concept of platforming around planetoids and the gravity implemented in a way that's not in your face, but still leaves its mark and something that might be small and overlooked, but multiplayer. It's a singleplayer game at its core, but you can just hand over the remote to anyone at all and say "here help me out, point at stuff, shoot them or stop them" at any time during the game completely seamlessly. It's frankly brilliant and I used it with 2 or 3 different people and it's a blast, whether they're helping you or screwing around.

Don't get me started on Zelda, the same since 1998? Pff.

Also anyone who still says Wii Music is too simplistic (hell calling it casual is wrong), has no idea and I mean no idea of what the game really is. The game isn't even similar to any other rhtyhm game honestly (because that's what most are, rhythm games, not music), it's completely new and revolutionary, as tapedeck says, a hallmark. Yes most of you will think I say this because I'm a fanboy, but I'm a fanboy who actually plays the game as well as many others and knows what he's talking about. If there's a perfect example of ingenuity, it's Wii Music.

Also little note about GH and RB noting that I picked up GH1 as soon as it came out and love it, while they might be a hallmark success and culturally wise, those things were already done before.

Nintendo's biggest innovation this generation is advertising. Creating something that can be seen as an entertainment device for everyone rather than a "computer games console".

I wouldn't put it as advertising, more as marketing or even a business philosophy. It's an evolution of what they and many others have been doing for a long time, but it was certainly a huge leap in strategy.

While we're on the subject what about 3rd parties? A little offtopic, but whatever, there have been some original games on all consoles lately. Z&W, Boom Blox, Braid (OK I confess I never played it but it looks original lol), De Blob, World of Goo, Lost Winds, Mirror's Edge, ...

Besides Wiimote. Sony all the way whether its hardware or software. Even when it comes to copying Sony add their own unique flavour and move more forward. We will see more games yet. Some will push technical boundaries such as MAG to Killzone to Singstar. Then there is also 3D stereoscopic gaming also on the way (wear 3d glasses). One step closer to holograms :heh:

Nintendo's biggest innovation this generation is advertising. Creating something that can be seen as an entertainment device for everyone rather than a "computer games console".

Quite frankly this is their biggest innovation and reason for success. Though alot of Wii owners are not that happy it is a sign that Nintendo's branding was a huge success to lure in almost anyone. They go far enough to try and avoid being associated with actual games in their communications.

Trophy level 10? No idea what you're sying :D Though I do know that if someone has a gold trophy on Uncharted then they have done something big!! a gamerscore of 10000 still tells me nothing!!

Just like someone who has the "Way of the Master Ninja" achievement on Ninja Gaiden 2?

At first I was going to say something about bringing motion-sensing gameplay into the mainstream eye, pioneering analogue sticks, making rumble-play the norm, saving the industry from a 1983 crash, creating the most cherished video game series' ever and carving a business ethos that might finally take away the stigma of video games as being for kiddies, fat, lonely nerds and men going through mid-life crises.

But then I remembered E308 and realised Nintendo haven't really done anything for this industry at all. Everyone else ftw.

But then I remembered E308 and realised Nintendo haven't really done anything recently for this industry at all. Everyone else ftw.

Fixed :heh: and even then it's not quite true, as recently they have given us... Wii Music and before that the latest installments of their classic franchises.

Basically the problem is not that they haven't done anything, just not enough to please everyone.

Also as for other formats, while Microsoft have given us plenty of what we want, it's mostly sequels and re-releases, the one original game that I did enjoy was Banjo-Kazooie Nuts & Bolts and on the PS3... MGS4 and LBP, apart from that not much else really stood out for me.

I seem to recall that Wii Music has been done before, albeit on a very small scale. It reminds me of the extra instruments you could unlock in Wario Ware Touched.

If you think this, you can't have played Wii Music.

I'm impressed with how calm this thread has stayed.

And however 'similar' Home is to a few other things, it's very impressive and feels futuristic, going around virtual worlds seeing other people in this virtual world, it freaks me out to be honest, I aint denying it!

I'd prefer nintendo to Animal Crossing-ise Home and I would love it!!!

I was just thinking - does it really matter? OK if a company invents something new then fair play, but at the end of the day it's the interface and console that is the best (or you prefer) that you choose. Same with any product.

I think both companies have done a lot, but Nintendo's have been more notible and bigger than Sony's, but Sony does well at refining things and making improvements.

I think Home is impressive but useless. I liked the videos that seamlessly integrate with the environment, thing is there isn't much reason to go on it yet. Maybe it will change.

For some maybe, but for others they like the creators, the true geniuses!!

We'll remember Edison for creating the light bulb; but not Tesco for making a better one!!

Let's take it generation by generation:

Gen: PlayStation vs N64

Best: Nintendo

The N64 was phenomenal, pushing the boundaries in both graphics and controls.

Gen: PS2 vs GameCube

Best: Nintendo

Nintendo were still the best, with masterpieces like Wind Waker. However, Sony created Team ICO to design two very artistic games (especially Shadow of the Colossus), and the PS2 did have all the best 3rd-party games, like Dragon Quest VIII!

Gen: PS3 vs Wii

Best: Sony

For me, the most important thing is the games, followed by the hardware (which affects the quality of the games). The Wii will probably end up having all the best games (like Dragon Quest and Zelda) but, in my opinion, Sony's hardware this gen would allow those games to be better (obviously never going to happen with Nintendo exclusives, of course).

Same goes for PSP vs DS. The DS is a pretty poor piece of hardware in terms of resolution, 3D capability and ergonomics (it gives me cramp), but it's an essential buy because it has (and will have) all the best games. Oh well. :indeed:

Posted

It could be argued that Nintendo didnt 'create' the home video game console. They merely ''Sony'd'' already existing concepts from Atari and other consoles and made everything much much better.

Nor did they invent online gaming, vibrating motors, analog sticks, touch screens or speakers for that matter. Its all borrowed tech thats been refined and tailored to their products, to great effect.

Yeah because it´s like Daft said before it falls under that hat of dialect.

There´s nothing really new about anything it´s just taking a pre-existing technology and using it with a new method

People screaming "stolen stolen!" need too cool down and realize no one really cares about that if the object is fun to use.

Bottom line, it´s business and all this discussions just go around in circles because no one is going to convince anyone that what they like is way better then what the other guy likes.

Posted

Yeah but some people, me included, has great respect and appreciation for the people who have the ideas :) Weird I know, but it's true, so the stolen stolen does bother people. It puts me off. It's artistic morality! I wouldn't care Avatars were better (though they're not) than Miis, I couldn't like them because they're a blatant rip off.

Starbucks may make the best coffee but I'd never go there in a million years!!

Posted
So am I a hypocrite for having a Wii and DS but liking Starbucks...? :o

No. I'm just saying it's a similar thinking for me. People pick and choose their own moral obligations, we can't do it all so we do bits and pieces. Obviously I'm not comparing videogame morality to not eating Nestle products in terms of seriousness, but just trying to explain myself......badly.......

Posted

That is of course your view of this but I believe that you can´t own an idea but you can own the product of it and that stealing is when you imitate the product with no progression to the idea it self.

On the artistic morality thing dosen´t the saying go: "Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery"

At least that´s what I believe when it comes to that, when you create something that great that the mainstream market follows suit after your creation.

But of course I believe in giving credit where credits are due when it comes to these things

Miis weren't new they're just an extension of a means of representation. Avatars are another extension of this idea.

Ideas are almost never new.

Isn't that like... impossible?

Pleasing everyone? yes... but what I mean is they could be doing more to satisfy the 'core as well but they aren't because we don't make them as much money as the casual crowd, still though some more stuff inbetween the big franchise games that are less casual would be nice that's all. :)
