Dante Posted February 16, 2009 Posted February 16, 2009 It's a quote, used in satire, and not directed towards anyone or anything*. It's not 'not decent', surely. In other news, just read this quote and it cheered me up. “Nobody ever said it’d be easy…but they said it’d be worth it.” *Except trees. Oh noes.. It still offensive language anyway from were you look at it.
DomJcg Posted February 16, 2009 Posted February 16, 2009 It still offensive language anyway from were you look at it. I always thought pointing a gun at your head was considered indecent, but thats just me.

X-men 1, 2 and 3 I plan on watching at least 5 this week. Anyone care to nominate one from the list? Donnie Darko American History X Nightmare before Christmas 28 Days Later (don't bother with Weeks later) Rocky Horror Picture Show Jurassic Park Children of Men I nominate any and all of those. Honestly just one though? American History X, a very powerful story. Only movie to make me tear up. Also, it's nearly unbelievable you haven't seen Jurassic Park! I noticed Pulp Fiction isn't on that list, so either you have seen it or some one (mindbogglingly)hasn't recommended it.
Dante Posted February 16, 2009 Posted February 16, 2009 Dyson has miss out on alot the classic horror films and gore films. He needs to watch Exorcist 3. I always thought pointing a gun at your head was considered indecent, but thats just me. Yeah thats just you!
Nolan Posted February 16, 2009 Posted February 16, 2009 It still offensive language anyway from were you look at it. Hardly, everyone is different, offensive to one means exactly diddly to another. It's like the regional differences between the US and UK for Fanny and Spastic.
Slaggis Posted February 16, 2009 Posted February 16, 2009 But one of the sig rules is "No offensive material of any sort (this includes vulgar and offensive language, pornographic images and anything else that is not 'decent') is permitted in either image or writing form." That's kind of going overboard though, isn't it? It's in no way aimed at someone, so unless you actually find the presence of the words offensive then there's nothing wrong with it, surely? American History X, a very powerful story. Only movie to make me tear up. I found it totally cliche ridden and in certain places a little boring (in the sense of it was totally obvious what was going to happen like the ending which seemed to be played out as though it was totally shocking when it just wasn't, and it seemed like some things were just put there to shock and not to add to the story). I liked it, just not as much as I thought I would.

Luckily, one of my saving graces is that I have seen Pulp Fiction (And Reservoir Dogs, too) so I'm not a total film reject My film list for this week has been half decided. 1. Slumdog Millionaire 2. Anchorman 3. My Neighbor Totoro 4. 28 Days Later 5. Not sure, currently undecided. Probably one I'm not too excited about seeing but is highly regarded as a very important film, so I can at least say I've seen it. Though if I get in to them I might end up watching a whole lot more

Dyson Posted February 16, 2009 Posted February 16, 2009 I went the route of a random number generator for the fifth instead, it threw No Country For Old Men at me, that'll do
Dante Posted February 16, 2009 Posted February 16, 2009 or Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. That's kind of going overboard though, isn't it? It's in no way aimed at someone, so unless you actually find the presence of the words offensive then there's nothing wrong with it, surely? Yes I do find the presence of the words offensive because i am sick of seeing and hearing swear words.
Dyson Posted February 16, 2009 Posted February 16, 2009 And yet you liked The Lonely Island's songs? Yeesh, double standards :p
Supergrunch Posted February 16, 2009 Posted February 16, 2009 It still offensive language anyway from were you look at it. Not necessarily. Take, for instance, the word "fuck," which you (along with many others) describe as being offensive however it's being used. Let's say one guy says to another (for whatever reason), "You fucking legend!" Unless this sentence is being used very sarcastically, it's not likely to be intensionally offensive, and if the other guy understands it to be a compliment and nobody else is present, then nobody has been offended. Indeed, far from being offensive, the addition of the word "fuck" into the sentence has increased the force of the sentiment expressed and also created a sense of camaraderie between the guys - the fact they're able to freely swear suggests they aren't watching what they say, and are friendly. Of course, the word can also be used offensively - if, say, one guy says (in an insulting tone) to another guy, "You fucking idiot!" It's hard to see what's going on here - while the first guy clearly wants to insult the second, this doesn't explain why adding "fuck" makes the insult more potent. The best suggestion I've come across is that as a taboo word, "fuck" carries negative associations and is linked to unpleasant feelings, and using it in this manner is like using a weapon - the recipient of the insult is forced to feel these unpleasant feelings and associate them with themselves. However, people don't just get offended by "fuck" when it's used towards them as an insult. Indeed, many find it offensive when used at all, presumably because it forces the link to unpleasant connotations. However, such an objection to the way others use language seems a bit spurious to me, especially when the swearer in question isn't even speaking to the offended person in question. It's a bit like when people are offended by others wearing nose rings or somesuch - even though they might not like it, the wearer of the ring should be free to do so, and arguing otherwise is absurb. So when people use swearwords in non-offensive contexts, they shouldn't be offensive at all. (in fact there are some things that invoke such unpleasant feelings in such large majorities of people that it seems reasonable to ban them - this is why we need laws about indecency and so on)
Nolan Posted February 16, 2009 Posted February 16, 2009 Ahhh the wonders of Freedom....so long as it doesn't offend
Ganepark32 Posted February 16, 2009 Posted February 16, 2009 @ Dyson - good luck with Lawrence of Arabia. That film is a nightmare to watch from start to finish. So god damn long. Over 4 hours IIRC. After watching the whole thing I couldn't move from my seat as I had been sitting watching for so long. Good film though. Don't make 'em like that anymore (at least on the length side of things)

I think I should start looking through that list as well, as there's lots of films on there I haven't seen yet (though quite a few I have). How did you manage to compile this list? I should be on my way to school right now, but I really can't be arsed to go, which is bad as I've skipped this class a couple of times already. But bah, four hours of drawing is just boring, especially since we have to work on our project, which I feel I can't do in school. So I'm staying home and will try to work on it here. If I manage to stay awake, heh. Edit: am sat here at my desk, listening to the birds sing outside. So nice. If it was Spring/Summer and it'd be a bit warmer, I'd so go out for a walk through the fields right now.

Wesley Posted February 16, 2009 Posted February 16, 2009 You're bias and it therefore doesn't count! My weekend was messed up! Did no coursework at all...! Not good. Not good. Got some major work to do this week. I also have the place to myself this weekend which will be fun. My girlfriend has gone home for her reading week. I'll be blasting out my rap and dancing like a loon!

Wesley Posted February 16, 2009 Posted February 16, 2009 Don't watch the Spiderman movies. You'll hurt your eyes. My day has improved by 1 point. My 3D lecture and tutorial were cancelled. Although fun, I didn't have anything to show... so yay!
