Posted May 14, 2009 ¡Viva La Cobra! as a second album stands out to me actually now that I think about it. I guess it's not as common as I thought, sometimes second efforts are superior to the first. Sometimes it can be difficult to decide. System of a Down and Toxicity are both brilliant albums, but it's only due to personal taste that I prefer the latter. I've mentioned Boring once before, but have never posted or mentioned Silly Boy, considering Razz only told me about it yesterday. I swear I've never said Britneys next single is Radar either. -- Completey agree Dyson. Their second album is far superior to their first, which only had a couple of standout tracks at best. At least half of Viva La Cobra is damn good. I'm totally addicted to Good Girls Go Bad, I can see it being a summer anthem should it get a push here in the UK. You have to think of the way it works; when a band forms they're full of musical ideas, and when they go to a record company they'll tend to have a disc almost full of ideas, an album practically ready to put out straight away. Disc one, done in their own time before any pressure is placed upon them by the record company. Of course, if it sells well, the record company are going to put pressure on the artists to put out a second album sooner rather than later as according to their contract, which quite often leads to them being rushed and not up to scratch. You have to give credit to bands that do put out a second good album in that respect, and I suppose their record labels too. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

I posted Good Girls Go Bad a week or so back, but as far as I'm aware Dyson didn't notice it (his reply to me asking about it implied he hadn't). Somehow, I've managed to get tickets for Britney at the O2 on the 11th. I've got an exam that afternoon, so I'm freaking out about how to get down there in time. The first half of Viva La Cobra is what is currently getting the repeated plays from me for now. One Day Robots Will Cry, Kiss My Sass, The City Is At War are all fantastic, repeatable tracks. The World Has Its Shine (fantastic rock ballad), Guilty Pleasure, Damn you look...fuck this song title(Scandalous), Smile For the Paparazzi and Angie are also all brilliant tracks. The others are good but don't get me going back to listen to them again. Because of the addictive nature of the first half of the album, to be fair, I haven't given the second album much of a chance since listening through it, but none of the tracks had the instantly accessible addictive nature of the ones mentioned above. As for Good Girls Go Bad, yeah. It's a good song, could see it getting good UK attention if it received enough radio backing but I don't see it happening unfortunately. Will probably be a hipster hit of the summer though.. Their cover songs are brilliant. Their version of Three Times A Lady really stands out as a fantastic cover. They've made it their own. Posted May 14, 2009 The only second album I can think of at this moment in time that bested a band's debut one is Dying To Say This To You by the Sounds. I would have said The Open Door by Evanescence but when you really sit down with that and Fallen and compare the two, the debut comes out on top (although technically, you could be picky and say that Anywhere But Home was their first album, and technically it was although it had a limited release, in which case Fallen then counts). Could perhaps say Ignition by the Offspring managed to do better. I think it was. Oh and Human Clay by Creed. Those are the only ones I can think of that I own that have bested the debuts. Reminded me of their early stuff, Empire stuff, a bit of Kings of Leon and a bit of Elbow rolled in to one. Wouldn't draw in new fans though, it's no Club Foot or LSF. If you were lucky enough to 'discover' the band after a coupla albums then good! Posted May 15, 2009 Jagged Little Pill is great, One of those albums that is just brill throughout. S.C.G you are indeed an inspiration to many, with lovely varied music taste. Thanks Paj all I can say though is I like what I like and I keep my mind open to trying something different every now and then, I'm sure there are many other people out there who also enjoy a variety of music - like yourself for instance - and I find it is the best way to enjoy music personally. ^^ Also Jagged Little Pill is indeed great - I have oft listened to it throughout when I was growing up due to my mum being a fan of Alanis Morisette, she would often put the album on in the car and of course back then - when I was younger - I loved it for the - very clearly pronounced - curse word in 'You Oughta Know' lol but of course now I've matured and I can appreciate that track and indeed the album for its rawness and intensity. Wasn't a fan of the second at all but I always liked their first.
