Oh and did anyone see the Comic Relief sketch containing Tony Blair? This may be just me, but I found saw it as an blatant attempt by him to try and "look cool" and improve his PR. I found it horribly cringey and I doubt he's gives a sod about Red Nose day. That's how I've always seen him, to be honest. He's a good speaker, and for the most part is confident in what he is saying. But, I wish he'd drop the whole "I'm wiv it and I'm hip!" act. Librarian Posted March 19, 2007 Share Posted March 19, 2007 I used to be "active".. but these days it just bores the shit out of me.. politicians are like children.. bickering and arguing.. and the worst thing for me is the kind of "we have the majority so we decide what is right and wrong if the earth is round or flat" that they NEVER can admit a mistake.. their power has blinded them to their own mistakes.. And yes.. now Tony has been in office for what? 12 years? Now the voters want a new face and probably vote tory.. now it's the same here in denmark.. when the same people have been in power for 8-12 years.. it usually changes Not because the politics are that much different but because "the people" get bored with the same faces.. I agree with you. I think people who came into politics, (hopefully) during this slimey end to Labours time in power, like myself, are more likely to vote for the Conservatives as not many would want to vote for Labour after seeing all the scandal, and all the lies that the Labour reign has perpetrated. However, I see the Conservatives winning the next election, and then they stay in power for a bit, and then gradually their standards will fall, and they will start to become corrupt, and complacant (just like the Labour is today) and the people of that time will see this, and favour Labour, vote them in. What particularly sickens me is when people do not vote, yet they moan about the person/party that gets into office. So annoying. But then again, some famous political theorist (his name escapes me) claimed that "Does the case for democracy break down when most people are proven to be stupid". I mean should morons who have no idea at all about politics be allowed to vote, when their vote will only be based upon something frivolous like the looks of the politician or their hair colour. Should those who are of a low intelligence, or those who are completely politically ignorant be entrusted with the power of which will decide who will lead our country for the next four years? Because of these people, which are unfortunately in the majority, I believe has lead to this horrible spin, and PR centred style of politics, with all the crap about presenting politicians to be "just like you lot, one of the lads etc". I think why a lot of people don't vote is because they view it as a vote wasted, for example, the area I live in has been under Conservative rule since I was born, and many people who do live in my area and do support Labour do not bother to vote as they think they'd just be wasting their vote. So in a way to remedy that, proportional representation could be introduced, as it would encourage people to vote for smaller, minority parties, like Green, or UKIP, or Respect who have policies that are specially designed, and not just in the middle like the Cons/Lab, as this way their vote would really mean something. Currently, under first past the post, if you vote for these parties it is generally a wasted vote due to the dominance of the Conservatives and Labour. darksnowman Posted March 19, 2007 Share Posted March 19, 2007 Yar we had our elections over here the other week. I made the day trip home from University so I could vote. Its a case of making the effort to voice my opinion on how the country should and shouldnt be run. Heck I numbered more than the required four (I did 1-7) just so there could be no mistake about who I DONT want voted in. Having said all that, I dont follow politics extremely closely, and even less do I follow England, Scotland and Wales... so sorry about that guys. Through University though I study French Politics and so I know a bit more about that than I would otherwise. One last thing, some dolls I know think its important not to waste their vote because women went through so much in the past to secure it for them. I find it amazingly irritating constantly hearing from people about how politicians don't listen to anyone any more, and then come election day the same people just go about saying they can't be bothered and they wish they would just get it over with. I'v been getting more political over the past year or so, mostly because I'm around people who claim to be political themselves. After a little research and sociology lectures, I realised that one of the people claiming to be political, was infact, without a clue what he was talking about. I enjoy political discushions, not to deep you understand, but about university top up fees and the like. If any ones interested I suppose I'm lib dem atm, there may be tax rises, but there are just causes that the money will go to, and of course, they are against top up fees, the most elitist and poorly thought out plan of the past 10 years. The problem is that there's noone that deserves to be voted for, you always have to chose between a Doosh (sp?) & a Turd. You can still moan about blindingly obvious shit that the goveernment does even if you bury your head such as NOT wating money on the Olimpics, Millenium Dome and State Spongers, who still afford to own new TVs, Sky and 'proper' Holidays. Olimpics money could have gone on ANYTHING...Y'know, like the failing NHS, new prisons (somewhere), more/better equipped police; even the armed forces would be a better use. It could have even been used to help those in the 3rd world. Even my controversial idea of a Government owned Casino would be a better use for the money than the olimpics.
