  1. Gigs I've been too.. Zebrahead, Brand New, Hundred Reasons, The Used, Jimmy Eat World... Saw McFly!... I mean, they were at the back of the crowd at The Used. Can't really remember who I saw at Reading... Alexisonfire, Jet, Slayer, My Chemical Romance, Less Than Jake, The Racontours, Panic!, Fightstar, Eagles Of Death Metal (ace!), Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Fall Out Boy, Belle and Sebastian, The Subways, Dashboard Confessional, Bullet For My Valentine, Placebo, Taking Back Sunday, Killswitch Engage, Mastodon, Coheed, The Fratellis for a bit.. and bits of arctic monkeys, muse, franz, etc. I would have seen better bands, but I was too busy having a mental breakdown
  2. just quoted both of your posts for clarity of my own mind. Let me get this straight. Music is about art and understanding and experience? You're ruling out writing as an art form; whatever, that's a totally different discussion :P. You are approaching the argument from the creators point of view - art or not, it doesn't matter. Not everyone agrees that music is an art form, you know. What you're saying is the creator has more experience and a greater understanding about the field they work in -now, put like that, it's a cohesive argument. But the problem is, we're talking about listening to music. It's all about the other end to the spectrum you are talking of. When you create music, or a book, or a film, or a painting, you are doing it because you want to create some sort of opinion on the viewer, listener, reader; the audience. It is about the audience's opinions. Most people who go to a gallery or read a book or go to the cinema or listen to music have little-to-none, in terms of experience in creating the art form. So do their opinions not matter? I can totally see how you can say "ultimately their opinions are worthless because it does not help further the creating process"... But is that really what listening to music, looking at a painting is all about? While it's true that you want to question what the creator's intentions were, what is more important to you is how you react to it, what it means to you. And we're all different 'you''s, which is why i think it's useless to say that anyone who doesn't play an instrument has no worth in what they say. Of course they do. Even though most of us don't paint, we could all suggest what The Scream means to us. I think that would be a lot better a topic than simply "what do you think of the techniques used by Da Vinci?", you know? It's in differences of opinion that new ideas arise from. That's important. If you refuse to listen to what other people think, especially the people who listen to your music that you create, you risk losing their opinion, their respect altogether. And besides, this is "The Music Thread", not "The Musician's Thread"
  3. People who make games have a better taste in games! People who make sandwiches have a better taste in sandwiches! People who make wardrobes have a better taste in wardrobes! .. hey maybe there's some truth in there But doesn't mean I will prefer the games they choose, the sandwiches they make, the wardrobes they choose, y'know? I think it's just silly to say "my taste in music is better than yours because I play GEETARRR!". People who write books read only the best. They why the fuck are there so many shite books out there? You know what I mean? Simple fact of the matter is; everyone believes that THEY have the best taste, and everybody else is alway slightly off at best. No point trying to attribute that to whether you play an instrument or not.
  4. .. I think I'm gonna have to get Shorty to lend me his camera so I can display the PITIFUL collection I have, of games and DVD's.
  5. that's iffy bollocks. I'm sure you can get a deeper meaning from the music if you understand that - but what about lyrics? If you're not a poet then clearly you're not getting the most out of a song, going by what you say. The lyrics are what I like the best in my songs. Of course you need both good music and good lyrics, but isn't it just down to what any individual thinks sounds good? In the end, your opinion counts just as much as his, regardless of musical background. Personally I'd listen more to what my mates say about a musician or a song than someone from Oasis or Megadeath or whatever, because it comes down to personal taste too.
  6. I'm liking the look of giveitaname lineup... mewithoutYou, Brand New, Senses Fail, alexisonfire, the used, mindless self indulgence, jimmy eat world, thursday, afi... it's really what Reading and Leeds ought to be like! Is anyone here going? I'm still trying to convince any solitary friend to go with me.
  7. why not post the reading lineup as well? I can't get on either of the sites just to see the lineup! Tsk.
  8. Love the sig, except for the fact it's ALMOST spoiling something for Shorty, who's not seen much of scrubs and is going through series 3 at the moment.. 9/10. New sig for me! Edit: Sorry, had this window open a while. You don't want a rating? Alright then :P But if you did, it's a number in my sig!
  9. Didn't The Bard make some videos of him at the pub once? maybe he could make an hour long video - 30 mins of drinking followed by the aftermath...
  10. Having 7/8 pints in half an hour doesn't bother me in terms of whether you're conscious or not, Bard, just the actual physical capacity your bladder has - it's about 300cc - 300 cubic centimeters. 300cc is equivalent to 0.527925978 Imperial pints... but of course you have your stomach too - "the stomach is about 12 inches (30.5 cm) long and is 6 inches. (15.2 cm) wide at its widest point. The stomach's capacity is about 1 qt (0.94 liters) in an adult." 0.94 litres is about 1.65416806 pints .. (google's calculator..) Now, I'm not sure about the rest of the body, just that it seems clear (from personal experience, too), you normally need a piss after each second/third pint (makes sense if you consider the body's literally FULL after that much). I figure that you must drink 2 and a half pints, and go to the toilet every ten minutes - plus the time it takes to buy the drink too... Maybe you're pissing it all out before the alcohol even gets into your bloodstream? I know that one unit of alcohol takes roughly an hour to get out of your bloodstream, and I'd GUESS (again, from personal experience) that it takes several minutes before you feel the alcohol's effect anyway. More estimating, but if you're peeing that often, there's a good chance you're losing it before it effects you. I don't know, I'm no expert. Perhaps you'll find you'll get JUST as drunk if you drank half the amount. Oh, plus the time it takes to wash your hands. I hope. Or you're lying.
  11. I get drunk... Most nights. Usually I buy a small crate of cider, typically Old English due to the cheapness (£5 for 8 440ml cans). When I started uni, three cans would get me nicely tipsy, then it was up to 6 cans for the same effect. Last night I drank 9 and felt in control. Usually I can tell that I'm reaching the end of my sesh because my tongue starts feeling swollen, and I can't talk as efficiently as I want to! A lot of the time I'm the only one getting drunk, most of the time a couple of the others will drink as well. We sit, talk, play games, watch movies, usual stuff. I don't always think that alcohol is NEEDED for fun, but I like the looseness that I get. I don't like it when I'm drinking and someone says to me "you're drunk!" ... well yeah, that's kinda the point... I don't get drunk as an excuse to be a tit to society mostly because I avoid actually going out BECAUSE people are tits when they're drunk in clubs and bars and stuff. As for underage drinking.. personally I'm glad I started drinking when I did, which was pretty much 14. If I had started drinking aged 18, I wouldn't know my limits, I wouldn't have those 4 years worth of experience of what I'm like when I'm drunk, what other people are like, where's nice to drink, where's not, what I like to drink, what gives me a worse hangover... et cetera, et cetera. Of course, I'm talking about myself and my friends who were, on the whole, not out to cause trouble or wreck park climbing frames, and so on.
  12. Bard, you've actually read all] of paradise lost? Juh-eez. My top Movie would have to be Waking Life. I guess the Book would be Wizard's First Rule, as I read it all in a day - and it's a big book! If I was to count things like A Scanner Darkly as a book and not a short story, I'd probably have to go with an Asimov short story that I read as a kid... and album.. currently Jimmy Eat World - Clarity. Or Brand New - Deja entendu[/i] or mewithoutYou - Catch For Us The Foxes.
  13. Descartes at work! As a paranoiac, I can totally fantasize that the entire world has been completely misinterpreted to me. For all I know, there's only 500 people, and they all constantly masquerade as other people to fool me into thinking the world is exactly as they've told me it is. How can you really believe in anything? Ultimately, you cannot trust anything but what you yourself has witnessed. When a train leaves from, for instance, leeds to sheffield, how do you KNOW that the train doesn't just circle back round to the other end of Sheffield? You just don't! you're taken on a journey of faith, and I think that there is a level of faith invested in trains and the reliability of what they are doing... ... Of course this is coming from an egocentrical and self-over-aware view! But you can see what I mean. What you are being told by anyone, or the media, cannot be trusted without some faith in them - for all we know, at some level, we are being lied to hugely. This is all besides the point :P The point is; I agree with shino. There's no way you can completely trust in any 'proof' when you yourself have no way to guarentee that proof. ETC.
  14. WAHEY! Go you, dude! Seriously, congratulations! You seriously won't understand how happy me and shorty are right now for you! ... Ok so maybe your own happiness kinda overwhelms ours - but just so you know, we're really pleased for you. *GRINS* Shorty mentions 'Abundant Gaming',and we both remember when you were but a noob like us. seriously, SERIOUSLY! (lol) Congrats!
  15. erm... Blast Corps for the N64 - not all that easy to properly complete! Also, Smash Bros Melee.. Ok so I've not completed it but if anyone has all the trophies, cool beans. Tetris! Seeing the Statue of Liberty taking off is a pleasing sight for anyone.

  17. Informed consent! Don't say yes until you know what he's gonna do with the results
  18. True... But we're kinda hoping that our species will be around as well. Earth has a habit of freezing over and shit. Not fun. I think there's one thing that people don't realise, that should be more widely known. Even if we stopped ALL co2 production right now, it is too late to stop the climate from changing. If we stopped all pollution today our polluting activities over the last couple of centuries would continue having an effect into the next. I think once people begin realising this, they may well be damn upset that reducing their co2 by 20% isn't doing enough. We need to do more positive things - that is, fixing what we've done rather than ignoring it.
  19. I've been told repeatedly "show, don't tell" by my lecturers - Instead of saying "he stayed calm" and "he started to feel woozy", why not display how he physically portrays these things? Like "despite all this, his hands refused to tremble", or "his legs began to lose their place in the room as his eyes lost track of the whirl around him", or something? Reader's (apparently) don't like being told exactly how the characters are feeling. It's hard, but try to leave lots to the reader's imagination besides just the basic construction of the universe yuo describe. Let them figure out how the character feels through his behaviour instead!
  20. There should be a wall of fame, so that when you tell people that you used to work on this site, they would see your name in lights and believe you
  21. Fuck knows just what I want to do - I figure if I can I'll be trying to do a masters degree after this is done. Teaching is always an option!
  22. Hey dude, glad it's going alright for you. A few weeks ago my girl drunkenly kissed another guy, and that totally broke me. I took a few positive things from it - firstly, she called me as soon as it happened to try to talk to me, and secondly she now understands that people can make mistakes. It's still there, at the back of my mind, and I know it was only a kiss (Or two.. or THREE.. GAH), but any breakage of trust like that really does put a big black question mark over things. Things are mostly stable currently, but there's a current undertone of distrust, which I don't want to go into... The big thing for me was that she confessed to it real quick, and was actually sorry. Strangely, she said to me that if it was me who kissed someone else she would have left me... But hey, my brighton pals are a fairly attractive bunch of ladies if need be, what say some hooking-upage ensues? Let me know in teh summer dude :P Shorty's going to come stay with me, if you're still in b'ton we can hit the tracks
