Personally I’m pretty hyped, but that is solely because of Megaman. I did say in the Smash Brothers thread I hoped for a 3rd party character announcement, since that would create some hype, and boy did it! While not as epic as Megaman, I think the Wii fit trainer is hilarious. Again, even though the hype is pretty much solely because of Megaman, I’m pretty pleased with what I saw. The only exception was Super Mario 3D land. I initially thought they snuck in a 3DS announcement, but it is a Wii U title. It looked somewhat fun, but I hate the way it is 3D even though it’s obvious the gameplay is almost 2D. Basically I would prefer a New Super Mario Bros title over this. Mario Kart looked cool. Bayonetta looked sexy (love the new hairstyle! Please I want a new figure of her!). X looked cool. Funnily enough I found that Miiverse / Art academy update awesome. I didn’t care too much about the 3rd party clips or indie games. These are all games I’m either going to ignore or I will buy on PC. Wind Waker.. I am not excited, but I’m carefully optimistic. It does look gorgeous, but it’s crazy how soon the hype went down for me after the initial announcement. It looks gorgeous but somehow doesn’t wow me anymore. That however doesn’t change the fact that I will likely only buy this if they add in enough new content.

First of all, I haven’t seen all Pixar films (though I will probably, one day). I love Up exactly because of the drama. I can agree with the critique that it’s a bit in contrast with the rest of the film, though that didn’t hamper my enjoyment. It’s similar with Wall-E in that regard, the first half of the film was amazing, the rest wasn’t. In Wall-E it was a bigger problem, because the contrast was bigger. Personally I blame Disney. I suspect Pixar are a bit restraint in the stuff they do because of them. I would love it if they break up their partnership, so Pixar can unleash their full potential. Wall-E and Up are perfect examples of films hinting Pixar is capable of some intense shit. Animation you don’t see other studios doing. I want more of that. More drama. Stuff that’s not (necessarily) family-orientated.

Hmm, if you require a laptop for other reasons, I’d go for a entry level laptop (again) and a medium range desktop. Otherwise desktop all the way, they are always cheaper.

Yeah.. On paper it looks like a film I shouldn’t even consider.. But the trailer has a bit of a “so bad it’s fun” vibe. I dunno. It’s a shame though, regardless of the film’s ultimate quality, the cast is plain awesome.

Which is not true. Some languages take more or less words to say the same thing than others. It can also depend on the sentence itself. With dubbing, it has to be an exact length (and specific rhythm). It can’t be longer, but it can’t be shorter either. With subtitles, you generally have more room to work with, and more freedom to choose a translation that does the source justice. It doesn’t happen often, but occasionally, when I watch subs with English spoken series or films, I can appreciate some good translations where the text does not match the spoken words literally, but offers a perfect translation because of it (regarding sayings, or jokes for example).

Well, after spending 2 days figuring out how to properly put some subtitles on a DVD which originally didn’t have them, you can guess how I feel about subtitles. I’m pretty sure I’ve already posted this somewhere, and that we’ve had this discussion before, but being Dutch, I love subtitles. People get exposed to English here so much, we don’t know any better. It’s not just English, other languages as well. Maybe it has to do because of a lack of talented voice actors, maybe because subbing is simply much cheaper, maybe because of tradition / history.. I really don’t know. But it’s what we’re used to, and I wouldn’t want it any other way. I really hate it that it’s a bit of a trend to dub more and more cartoons for kids nowadays, as that’s how I learned English all those years ago. Let me first state that even subtitles are not ideal. Ideal would be to know the language in the first place. But here’s why I prefer subs: - Authenticity: I simply want to enjoy entertainment in its original form as much as possible. Even in the rare occasion a dub may be technically superior, it’s still not authentic. Subtitles obscure some part of the image, but they don’t change the original material. It’s less of a problem with cartoons or some video games, but with live-action I really don’t want to hear fake voices. I also can’t stand commercials with famous actors who are dubbed in Dutch.. - Immersion: again, subtitles obscure the image somewhat, it’s too bad, but in my opinion it’s a whole of a lot better than voices not matching up with their actors speaking. It is always noticeable, even when done by a capable company. - Even more personal than the other two, but I kind of like hearing other languages now and then. Just to demonstrate, I went through my films of this year, and I’ve heard the following languages: English, French, Spanish, German, Danish, Icelandic, Japanese, Cantonese, Korean, Persian, and Hindi, and that’s just this year. Of course, a festival will do that, but I’m interested in other cultures, and the language is part of that. Now of course, lip syncing is less of a problem with 2D animation (unless you have a high budget animation), but I still prefer to see it in its original language. 3D animation is generally lip synced, so there it is a problem. To give an example: I wanted to watch Kaena, which is a French 3D animation. It being French, I defaulted to watch it in French, but then it was obvious the film wasn’t actually animated with French in mind. So I had to endure both Kirsten Dunst’s voice and French subtitles which I could not turn off, simply because I couldn’t stand to watch it in French with out of sync voices. It was a shame, because the French voices were actually better. With video games it’s the same as with animation. Unless it’s 3D and lip synced, it’s technically not a problem, but it’s still not authentic. But I’m usually not given a choice. When I am, I generally default to the original language, unless I’m not immediately aware of the original language. I think I should replay The witcher in Polish or something. I remember finding out the Castlevania games for the GBA had the original Japanese voices included. Switched immediately :p. I think it’s small minded to complain about having to “read the movie”, but then again, I don’t know any different, and these people don’t either. But personally I have no trouble at all concentrating on the film while reading subtitles. To me, it’s the same thing. The dialogue is part of the film, so you read the subtitles along with it. And like Eenuh said, it’s the same screen. If there’s no dubbed version, what would the alternative be? You’d go “Oh, this sounds cool, but there’s no dubbed version, so pass..”. You’d miss out on a lot of cool stuff. Granted, there is and will be enough entertainment in the English language to keep you busy for a lifetime, but again, if you think something looks cool but pass on it, you’re missing out. The only alternative in that case would be to wait for any potential remakes, and guess how I think about remakes.

I promised I’d do this @Fierce_LiNk Channel 4, 09 June at 9 PM Although I still haven’t seen the last 4 episodes. Many excuses etc. But I'’m authoring the subbed DVD’s as I speak (ehh type), and next Saturday I am definitely going to do that marathon with a friend. So this is a French TV series called Les revenants, in English called “The returned”. It’s well.. about zombies. Just not the typical kind. It’s set in a remote little French village, and suddenly, people start coming back from the dead.. The series start when Camille, one of a pair of twin sisters (the girl in my avatar is the other half of the pair, all grown up), who died in a bus accident, suddenly returns home to a shocked family. She initially doesn’t realise what has happened to her, and doesn’t understand the commotion. More dead people keep turning up, and although they want to just continue their lives, something’s off. I could list the characters, but it’s more fun to just watch it and see what happens to them and what their backstory is. Every episode focusses on one specific character, and all the dead people have different backstories (some are older than others). Other reasons to like this is the awesome music by Mogwai. Let me post the intro: Unfortunately that’s the only video of the intro itself, but if you want a better version of the song: Anyway, you people can enjoy Les revenants on Channel 4 today, it will air at 9 PM. The English name is “The returned”, which is a literal translation. Revenants is French for people who have returned, but also for ghosts or zombies from what I’ve gathered. Initially the name was slated to be “Rebound”. Like I said in the general TV thread, this is the best thing I’ve seen at a film festival, so it was pretty amazing. I urge you all to go watch it! Another thing, the series is based on a film with the same name (although the English name is translated as “They came back”). I haven’t seen this film, though it was shown at the same festival where I saw the TV series this year. I can remember wanting to see it, but ultimately didn’t go. Probably because lack of money, because I don’t think I’ve gone to the festival at all that year (2005).
