Nintendo need to sort out this ignorance ARGH!!!!

As some of you may or may not know I work at HMV, we have display material around the store saying PREORDER WII NOW written on them, then with a picture of the Wii and the Wiimote.

These are two of the reactions I heard people saying about it:

"It looks shit, its not even even got an analogue stick" this was a young lad saying to his group of mates, I'd term them all as casual gamers (as I look down at them), but surely Nintendo need to try and grab these gamers if they are to become number one. I did try to explain to them, but they simply said to me, "sounds abit wierd to me"

Here's the second reaction, little girl askes her dad what that is pointing at the Wii picture, he said wait for this wait..."ITS JUST A WHITE DVD PLAYER!" ARGH that made me mad.

Now surely this could be down to peoples own ignorance, but surely with little over a month till launch nintendo should be worried that some people dont even know its a games console?! or I am just over reacting?! I don't think I am, I say Nintendo pull your finger out, get that tour of the country, putting the wiimote in peoples hands and get advertising ASAP!

I would just like to point out before people start flaming me for being negative, that I have up until now been soooooo positive about the Wii, its just annoyed me that other people dont appreciate it!

I've already said stuff similar to this on another thread. Most people don't even know what a 'Wii' is yet, let alone what it does. Something really does need to be done. Unlike other consoles this NEEDS to be played. Nintendo can't rely on nice screenshots to sell it, they won;t stack up against the 360 and the PS3, this is something that has to be experienced - and with little over a month until release, things look grim.

Well nintendo arn't aiming at casual gamers, which i think is a bad move. One of the main reason gamecube wasn't succesful was because it didn't appeal to casual gamers which resulted in a loss of support. Its kinda like hollywood, if your going to produce low budjet "good" films then you have to also release the stupid action/sequel/pratically soft porn movies to make profit.

If nintendo are planning on alienating the casual gamer in a hope to gain the general non-gaming public then they are going to have hard times. They are non gaming for a reason.

The other day I heard a few people sounding really interested about the Wii outside HMV.

They were looking at HMV's Video Game Mag/Catalog thing - It had PS3 on the front cover, basically said that it won't be here for a while, then proceeded to inform people about the Wii - Which is fantastic advertising (giving anyone interested in PlayStation a booklet mainly about how good Wii is).

yeah that is true, but then thats not Nintendo's work is it?

I havn't heard a single positive remark about it from customers, even some of my colleagues are already writing it off as a kids console.

Not suprised by these remarks from the public eye. As unfortunate as this is, the only reason why a majority of consumers are actually buying a Wii instead of a PS3 is only because PS3 is "TOO EXPENSIVE" and not the fact that the Wii is considered as a legitimately better console. I am yet to see a single person seriously say this and believe it.

Nintendo simply haven't accounted for the changes in society. They are too consumed by the past and lack the understanding or ability to appeal to todays market. There should've been an advertising frenzy taking place a few months ago leading up till launch yet SERIOUS advertising has been practically non existant. They are being reactive in their approach by just sitting back and EXPECTING people to buy the console that most people know nothing about, where as they should've taken a proactive approach, and really show people why a Wii is worth buying. Demo reels on TVs in a game shop will do nothing but discourage consumers as they'll see the visuals of launch games and dismiss the console as a Gamecube 1.5 for kids. They already have a seriously damaged reputation with third parties due to consumers dismissing Nintendo for not only not being "cool enough" but also lacking overrated but very popular games such as The Metal Gear Solid Series and GTA that singlehandedly sell consoles and the opportunity to make a good 1st impression as part of intensive corrective action to give them a great start in the next console race has gone begging. If they were to have any chance whatsoever this time round, they needed to act immediately and not leave it like they have. Expect this to be Nintendos last home console.

Actually my local GAME is doing a fantastic job, there's a guy at the till demonstrating with his hands how you play, and loads of people watch the ONM DVD of Twilight Princess and loads of others then preorder.

you see buts that down to staff enthusiasm nothing else. if he wasnt there it might not happen.

Welcome to England

QFT, im not surprised at their first impressions. They know nothing of it and that is nintendo's and everyone elses fault, for not advertising properly and their biased opinions.

However everytime I've gone into GAME there has always ben a Wii video playing, plus i said in another thread but ill say again. In GAME in bury, I overheard the staff saying that the Wii had around 75 pre-orders already. Wheile the 360 only had 60 pre-orders when it came out.

It's times like this I'm glad to live in Norway.. At least at my school noone talks about the PS3, but many about the Wii. I do see this sometimes though when a Spaceworld (GOD this made me hate spaceworld (it's a game store, btw)) employee, upon asked by a non-gamer what gaming system to buy for his son, said "Well, you could get the 360 now or you could wait until the PS3 comes out. It's been delayed until 2007 though so if you want a system before christmas you should get the 360, or a PS2 if you want something cheap, but I wouldn't recommend that".

Something along the lines of that anyway.. He just went on and on and he never mentioned the Wii at all. Thank god I never buy anything there and only sponger off their Guitar Hero machine. Serves them right. :yay:

Assholes though.

Alot of the ignorance is because of its "image" and graphics. Shaking off the kiddy image is hard when your franchises are made up of basically cartoon characters and the graphics...

The first thing someone will say to me is "the graphics are really pathetic."

And how can you counter that? I mean sure its all about the gameplay but we haven't even played the thing. For all you know the 360 or ps3 has games with better gameplay. Maybe the wii-mote will just be a pain in the ass.

So i'm with those people who believe they're should be test machines because its not supposed to be pretty, it supposed to be enjoyable and not only do videos do nothing to help the wii, in certain circles its detrimental to itself.

How are the graphics pathetic? I mean, sure, they're cartoony, and not as good as the PS3 and XB360 graphics but that doesn't mean pathetic. People who think cartoony graphics by default mean bad graphics need to think again.

Also, you can counter it with "The games are really pathetic" (on 360 and PS3, obviously not being completely true, but just as true as saying the wii graphics are).

To counter that I always say stuff like, will you buy GTA again, even though the graphics are sightly improved, yet the gameplay is only slightly improved.

One you could say this about is GT4, i mean the graphicsaa are slightly improved, in HD and all, but whats different? You're driving the same cars/new cars, on the same racks/new tracks, there nothing different yet peopel will buy it.

maybe that a bad game beacuse its always like that, but try and pu it to another game.

Its hard to think of this when theres a cat sat on your lap, digging his claws into your thighs, and wont rest.....

It is just a white DVD player.

Those two people are geniuses and this is a shite thread.

Stopp telling Nintendo how to do their job, if they cock up they wont have one. They are accountable to their sales, marketing, accounts and actions over the Christmas period.

NOT YOU.
