That box art is awful.

It gets a bit better for me if I imagine Shantae is dodging the silver border on the left.

"ACK! Limited Run Games! That was a close one!"

Yo! Here's a video that I'm not watching!

Wayforward just did (and by "just did", I mean did more than a week ago and I only just found out now), a stream showing the first 15 mins of the game!

If you want to spoil the first 15 mins of the game for yourself, check a look!

The modern console release has been delayed to 2025.  Hopefully the physical GBA cart still makes it for the end of this year, though I wouldn't be surprised if it ends up slipping into 2025 too.

We have an update!

In an interview with Time Extension regarding the upcoming release of Sigma Star Saga DX, Matt Bozon let slip a few tidbits about Shantae Advance’s upcoming release…

Quote

Time Extension: Are there any other upcoming projects that you can talk about that WayForward is developing? How is Shantae Advance: Risky Revolution coming? Can we expect any news on that game soon?

Bozon: Thanks for asking! We have a lot of exciting projects in the works, based on some of our favorite brands. For now, I’ll have to be vague about those, but please look forward to more info - it will definitely be worth the wait! Regarding Shantae Advance: Risky Revolution, we’re in the home stretch! The carts are in manufacturing, and we’ve received finished production samples of the box, instruction booklet, and cartridges. They look and play amazing! We expect them to ship out very soon! Beyond that, the console port of the new Shantae is also progressing wonderfully.

Looks like the game is done and we’re now just waiting on cart/box/manual manufacturing! Shouldn’t be long to go now then :)

Just got an email from Limited Run saying that my order has shipped.

It's happening?

Same here. I had to double-check it wasn’t a spam message at first!  I’d better put my DS/GBA on charge!

I had to literally fish my LRG email out of my spam folder lol

My tracking thingy has just updated... estimated arrival date is 2nd of May!

It's all rather weridly unceremoneous isn't it?

Still, I'm not complaining! I'll gladly take it! :D

People have started receiving this and there's a suspicion that Limited Run have overwritten some old cartridges.

Yeah, I was reading about this the other day. Some of the carts that people have received have been opened up and looked scuffed and old, with others checking them with the software, as seen in your Reddit link.

If true, it doesn't surprise me in the slightest. LRG have been scummy for years now and they look like they have no intention of changing. Shady business practices, awful treatment of staff, dodgy financial dealings...the list goes on.

It wouldn’t surprise me if they’re reusing some cheap recycled Chinese bootleg carts; it IS LRG after all.

Either way, first thing I’ll be doing is ripping the ROM and playing it on my GBA Everdrive/Analogue Pocket/MiSTer instead.

Heads up to anyone planning on ripping their LRG cart, it looks like the ROM has some issues with saving on most flashcarts and FPGA devices; due to the weird cartridge that LRG have used, and some strange patching that they've done to Wayforward's ROM to make it work with their dodgy bootleg carts (In nerd speak, the ROM header is broken and the game has been set to use the wrong save type.  The actual game that Wayforward made uses SRAM to save, but has been modified by LRG to use EEPROM instead; causing saves to not persist on anything other than LRG's bootleg carts).

Luckily, somebody has made a patch that seems to undo the damage that LRG did and fixes the issue...

Yup.  My copy arrived on Saturday 3rd.  Haven't had much time to play it yet, but I'm thoroughly enjoying it so far!

I really like the background plane switching gimmick, a fresh twist on the typical series exploration mechanics.  Level design is very solid too, much better than what we saw in Seven Sirens, with more interesting layouts, better pacing and more interesting environmental puzzles to solve.  The music is good, the animation is great, the gameplay feel is very great! (I particularily love the diving and swimming mechanics!), and the couple of boss encounters I've done are brill.  It's all great stuff!

I'll give more detailed impressions as I spend more time with it, but it's looking like this is gonna end up being amongst my favourite of the series.  This is almost certainly the best of the "classic" Shantae style of games, as seen in Shantae GBC and Risky's Revenge.

To be fair, the title screen does say copyright 2024; so seemingly LRG took at least 5 months to get the carts manufactured and shipped… so… err… don’t cut them too much slack here :p
