Fierce_LiNk Posted July 8, 2015 Author Share Posted July 8, 2015 I've seen a few films recently. The Imitation Game I enjoyed this a lot and thought Cumberbatch was excellent throughout. Really well paced. I do like how they didn't overplay the final section, because it was a particularly bleak part of the story but I feel they got it just right. Not sure about the inclusion of Keira Knightly in this, a bit too glamorous for such a role. Otherwise, I liked this and would recommend. Oblivion Very "Moon", especially in the second and final third of the film. We put this on because we didn't know anything about it and thought it would be decent and it turned out to be slightly better than we expected. I enjoyed it, but in a Sunday afternoon because there's nothing else to watch kinda way. Jurassic World Take the original film but then take out the magic and the sense of wonder and you have a little bit of what resembles this film. It's ok, borderline shit, unspectacular and a bit dull in places. The whole final third is silly, there's no other word for it really. The type of film that will be replayed on ITV2 three times a week for the next 10 years. Super 8 You know, I quite enjoyed this! I wonder if they made the wrong choice by making it a "monster" movie. The film really should have been about the kids, because that whole first half with the kids making that film was excellent. Great dialogue in places, a bit of that coming-of-age drama that you get from The Goonies and Stand By Me, a bit of ET thrown in. It goes a bit too Cloverfield in the final 30 minutes or so, which is a bit of a shame because it's so good up until then. I enjoyed it and I think the final few minutes make up for the amount of action that takes place towards the end. It's very ET and Cloverfield in places, without really having the finesse of either. De surprise imdb ♥♥♥♥♥ Another Dutch film which was ok. A guy wants to end his life, so he enlists the help of an organisation which specializes in exactly that. But then he falls in love with a woman who's also a customer.. Especially given the subject matter, I'd expected a more modern feel, but the film was enjoyable regardless. Mad Max: fury road imdb ♥♥♥♥♥I've never seen the previous films, so I went solely based on good word-of-mouth. The setting and premise never interested me previously. Basically it's Borderlands, but without the humour (and yes I know, it's the other way around..). That said though.. It actually didn't disappoint. Story-wise it's simple, but action-wise it was great. A bunch of great characters, including bad-ass grannies. My major complaint is the 3D, it's abysmal, and another great example of why you shouldn't convert to 3D. But there's a big chance I'll go see how it looks in 2D next week. Schneider vs. Bax imdb ♥♥♥♥♥ And another Dutch film. I liked the previous film of the director (Borgman), but this did very little for me. Two hitmen are pitted against each other. Blade runner (the final cut) imdb ♥♥♥♥♥No need to explain. Looked great on a big screen. The age of Adaline imdb ♥♥♥♥♥ Nice story, but was hoping for more. The film could do with more backstory and flashbacks, and less of the medical explanation of Adaline's condition, which only detracted from the story. Journal d'une femme de chambre imdb ♥♥♥♥♥ Watched this for Léa Sedoux. Incredibly annoying costume drama. Because the setting is old fashioned doesn't mean the film itself should be old fashioned.. And we barely get to know the protagonist's motivation. Taxi Teheran imdb ♥♥♥♥♥ I don't normally watch overly political films, but this one was pretty creative in how it adressed the subject matter. The director plays himself, as he drives a cab and talks with his customers. The face of an angel imdb ♥♥♥♥♥ Not quite sure what to think of this one actually, though I did love the atmosphere and Italian setting. And it was nice to see kate Beckinsale again, despite the American accent. Infinitely polar bear imdb ♥♥♥♥♥Great dramedy with the Hulk vs. Gamora. Mark Rufalo plays a husband with bi-polar disorder, who needs to look after the kids while his wife, well ex-wife goes back to study. Anyway, it was great, touching and funny. The kids were adorable. Testament of youth imdb ♥♥♥♥♥Unlike the French film above, this is a great example of a costume drama. Great performances, and great but sad story. La isla Mínima imdb ♥♥♥♥♥ Can't put my finger on it, but didn't enjoy this. It's like they rushed to make a Spanish True detective film. I never had the idea I was watching actual detective work, or an actual story for that matter.. I don't know. The less you know, the better. Great little indie film, that starts as a romantic comedy, and ends as something else. Fierce_LiNk Posted July 14, 2015 Author Share Posted July 14, 2015 Terminator Genisys I'm just going to quote my post from the Terminator thread because I'll just be repeating myself and I can't be arsed rewriting what will essentially be the same shite again. So...I saw this at the weekend. It's getting a bit sad now. There are now more bad/average Terminator films than there are good ones. The tipping point has come and gone. This is probably the worst reboot that I've ever seen for one very important reason: It's not really a reboot. You can't actually watch this film and understand its basic plot without having seen at least the first Terminator film and probably the second, too. It's even got Arnie in it which...is very confusing for newcomers because the rest of the cast is new. I have to say, it has a very fan-made feel to it in a lot of places. Particularly when: They go back to 1984 and essentially re-create the scenes from the first film frame for frame. Also, I said it once this weekend and I'll say it again...I'm bored of the whole John/Sarah/Kyle arc. The story actually reached its conclusion, we got good closure for it in Terminator 2 (it ended absolutely fine there), we got a third film that just extended things for the sake of it, but still reached a decent conclusion. The TV series did a great job, Salvation was ok and it's a bit unfortunate we didn't get to see more of the future war which I think a lot of people wanted...Just give us a new story in this universe. Why retread old ground? There's nothing to be gained there. Give us the same sort of universe, but a new story arc with new characters, new plot points, etc. As for Arnie, he was probably the best thing about the thing. But, I'm sad at how little the series has progressed because there is so much potential there to create a really intricate man vs. machine story/thriller like the original. I think I've come to terms now with the fact that I think that there will never be another great film in this series again. In short: I think the series is starting to blow. Or rather, it's been blowing for a while and has now reached full-blow. BLOW. Man of Steel This is fucking excellent and I really struggle when I get into discussions with people who hate this film. One of my best mates hates it and I...just don't really understand. It's the best interpretation of Superman on film, imo. Everything in this works; the story, the acting, the fight scenes, the cast, the dialogue. I love it. I think it actually gets better on repeated viewings and is made for the cinema thanks to its gorgeous visuals and excellent sound. Mr-Paul Posted July 17, 2015 Share Posted July 17, 2015 Ted 2 Not as good as the first, but still had plenty of laughs. Typical Seth McFarlane Family Guy-esque humour. Plus it had Amanda Seyfried in, which is never a bad thing. Terminator Genisys (2nd time) After watching it the first time, I started watching Sarah Connor Chronicles again, and the TV series is so much better. I actually sorta enjoyed Genisys, but the plot makes absolutely no sense, and the film actually has no shame in it having a nonsense plot, it openly admits it. Kyle Reese actually does nothing of use in the whole film. It might as well just been Arnie and Mother of Dragons. Also barely any point in J Jonah Jameson. It really is a shame, as the originals are some of my favourites. Ant-Man Really enjoyable. There's a lot of talk about whether it'd have been better directed by Edgar Wright. Maybe it would have, but I wasn't disappointed with this at all. Michael Peña's character was great, the action was a nice change of pace from your usual Marvel fare - no crashing spaceship/island/meteor that must be stopped! Liked how it tied into the MCU too. Will watch again. In truth, I knew nothing about it and went into it completely blind...except that I knew Batfleck was in this. It was very interesting and I liked it a lot! It started off as a bit of a mystery story...but then completely changed halfway through! After that point, I had no idea what was going to happen and it kept me hooked the entire time. Rosamund Pike was phenomenal...no surprise she was nominated for an oscar for this. Would recommend! How does it compare to films like Up and Wall-E? (I only read part of your review Murr as I want to avoid spoilers, the only thing I know about the film is that we are inside a girls head and the characters represent her feelings.) Not my favourite film from Pixar, I'd rank Toy Story 3, Wall-E, Up and Finding Nemo above it, but to say it's below those doesn't diminish its quality. Such a unique concept, and I love that the trailers don't ruin the film at all. The psychology and jokes in this film are very clever - so much of it will fly over kids' heads. Loved the "thought train" and the deja vu jokes. Will be re-watching for sure. Southpaw I've decided to try doing some video reviews for the movies I see. Ganepark32 Posted August 3, 2015 Share Posted August 3, 2015 Been on a massive movie binge with the missus recently, most of it settling on animated fare. Both of us went to see Inside Out last night and loved it! It's definitely not a kids film, at least I walked out thinking that it wasn't really, but it takes a interesting concept and handles it all really well. As others have said, the bits inside the head and the to and fro from the emotions is great. Very funny in places but also does that Pixar tugging on the heart strings bit with a supporting character (if you've seen it, you'll know who I mean. Managed to hold back the tears at that bit). Yeah, definitely up there as one of the best Pixar has put out. Can't wait to watch it again. Shame that the short at the start of the film wasn't great; thought Lava was a bit meh and cringey. Have also watched a load of other animated stuff over the last couple of weeks for the first time: How To Train Your Dragon - Loved this as well. Toothless made it really, and the other dragons acting like cats. Already have the second one waiting to be watched so looking forward to seeing how it matches up but I'd say this is on par with Pixar's best output. Penguins of Madagascar - Really enjoyed this. Have never seen any of the Madagascar films but that didn't matter, the penguins were awesome. A lot of laughs were had (Rico sliding back and forth on the wok and munching on Kowalski, the liederhosen bit with the squids dancing along) and have already watched it again and loved it every bit as much as the first time. Monsters Inc. - Had only seen little bits and pieces of this before now and wasn't exactly taken by it but having sat down and watched the whole thing, I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. It wouldn't figure into my top 5 Pixar films but it wouldn't be far off. Over The Hedge - Couldn't even finish this. Was just so dry and really didn't enjoy it. Not one of DreamWorks best pieces of work. Home - Really really enjoyed this. Wasn't sure it would hold up after seeing trailers for it but Jim Parson's works the script well and is great as Oh, though the cat steals the show at times. Probably as enjoyable as Penguins of Madagascar but doesn't come close to the awesomeness of How To Train Your Dragon. Have also watched the first 2 Saw films for the first time. Enjoyed those as well. The original Amityville Horror as well. The start was good but it didn't manage to keep this up as it went along and I kind of got bored towards the end of the film. Not only is it a fluid and charming journey, it gets right to the core of it's themes and renders them in ways that are convincingly universal. Easily one of the finest films of any genre I've seen for quite some time. I almost walked immediately back into the cinema to watch it again. I thought it was very clever, and i enjoyed all the bits inside her head, but i found the whole rest of the film far too miserable. I really don't like sad films, and this one seems pretty damn gloomy right from the start. It seems to be the way all Pixars films are going these days, which i think is a shame. Ganepark32 Posted August 10, 2015 Share Posted August 10, 2015 The local cinema up here has been doing a deal where each week, they choose a new film and put on a screening at 11am and you can go along, pay £6 for a ticket as well as a tea/coffee and a bacon or fried egg roll beforehand. Thought it was a pretty good deal so myself and the missus went along yesterday and saw The Legend of Barney Thompson. Overall, I enjoyed the film. Quite dark at times (in that the way that these small British independent films tend to be) but had quite a few funny moments throughout to keep everything in check, such as the mother labelling the body parts in the freezer and saying "I always label everything". The ending was pretty awful, another case of a hackneyed ending which should've played out better than it did. Also didn't care for Ashley Jensen in it. Never liked her in anything I've seen but in this, she just seemed thrown in because it was set in Glasgow and she's Scottish. As an antagonist for Ray Winstone, she just didn't work. Other than her though, Winstone was great as was Robert Carlyle although Emma Thomson won it with that stereotypical pensioner Glaswegian accent. So yeah, decent film overall. The best film I've seen on the big screen this year (fuck you, Terminator Genisys) The script was gold and the whole idea was so uniquely presented and delivered that it kept me hooked the entire time. I wasn't hugely excited about seeing this as I thought it looked a bit average from the trailer, but this has shot up to be one of my favourite Pixar films. I knew very little about it beforehand other than Steve Carell was apparently quite good in it. The acting was great from the three big leads, particularly Channing Tatum, who I've never seen in a film that wasn't a comedy before. Steve Carell was haunting in this, yet also sad to watch. Even until the final act, I was still back and forth about what kind of person or even what kind of film this was. I found it pretty shocking at the end: Legitimately gasped when he fired the gun. I didn't expect him to pull the trigger because it seemed out of place for his character...definitely a shocking ending if you don't expect it. I definitely liked the film, but I doubt that I'll watch it again, at least not for a loooooong, long time. I'd have a hard time recommending it too because the pace of it can be pretty slow, which isn't for everybody. There's a lot of intended awkward pauses which also may put a few people off. It made me very interested in the background story behind this film and I spent a bit of time yesterday looking it all up. I appreciated that it's "good" but it's my least enjoyed film of the year, and I've seen some crap films. Big update time! Still planning on doing video reviews, but I've fallen behind on them! Will get back to them after my holiday next week. Saw quite a few films in August, here's what I thought. Pixels Poor, but mildly enjoyable for the video game references. Maggie A very different role from Arnold Schwarzenegger, as a father of a girl suffering from a zombie infection. Low budget, not a lot happens - it's a drama rather than an action film. Worth a watch when it comes onto the telly. Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation Really enjoyable. Cruise is a great action star, Pegg provides great comic relief. Lots of twist and turns along the way, good set-pieces, only letdown is the main villain doesn't seem too threatening. Fantastic Four Disappointing. Ends too soon. They're only superheroes for like 10 minutes of the film! Too glum and brooding. Mildly enjoyed it, but it definitely deserves its failure at the box office. Vacation Another film from the National Lampoon franchise. Pretty much a re-tread of the original. Lots of poo jokes. Very American humour. Was alright I guess. Trainwreck This was good, enjoyable, amusing, but not something that I really think I'd watch again. Felt like a quite classy romcom. The Man from U.N.C.L.E Yes. This was good. Stylish, fun, enjoyable heist/spy movie. My mum said she always liked the original series back in the 60s. Alicia Vikander is so beautiful. Bad Education Movie Never watched the TV series much, but this was alright. Bottom of the barrel humour, but it had a nice, if a bit simple, plot. Jack Whitehall plays the posh idiotic twat pretty well. Paper Towns Quite liked this actually, although I was disappointed at the ending. Some nice mystery elements, although the high-school clichés in it knocked it down a peg. Billed as Cara Delevigne starring, but she was only in it for about 15 mins. Lulls in the middle, but definitely some very enjoyable parts. Straight Outta Compton An good biopic of N.W.A. Didn't know much about them beforehand other than Ice Cube and Dr. Dre were members. Although they were involved in the production, it didn't hold off too much on some of the questionable things they had done in their younger years. Probably better if you're into your rap music and gangster culture. Of the "normal" films I can recommend Inside out, Ant-man, Mission: impossible, Dope and Paper towns. Stay away from American ultra and The visit. I can't recommend The maze runner as a stand-alone film, it actually lacks a satisfying climax, though people who are interested in the film will likely have seen the first one, and will likely see the last one. The action was pretty good though. Of the Japanese films I can recommend Our little sister, which played at Cannes recently, and is a feel-good film about a trio of sisters who take care of their newly found half-sister. I can also recommend Kakekomi, a costume drama set in the 19th century, about women who take shelter at a temple so they can divorce their husbands. Oh and Deadman inferno, a guilty pleasure action-comedy about yakuza versus zombies, nothing more, nothing less. But my absolute favourite of the festival was The case of Hana and Alice, an animated prequel to a film from 2004, a coming of age film of how 2 girls met. Adorable and very funny. Ryuzo and his 7 henchmen is the latest Takeshi Kitano, it was ok, but nothing special in my opinion. About a group of senior yakuza starting a gang again.
