Ah, I only have a couple of A ranks! What's your strategy?

Being really good :p

Seriously though, not getting hit so you have lots of rings helps. Each ring gives you 200 in the level and then 1000 points at the end if you still have it. Obviously going fast helps too. But also key is abusing wisps. They dole out shed loads of points. Like when using the drill, every couple of seconds, you get 4000 points or so just for being in that form. And It's more than the points you get for the quicker stage time by not bothering with them.

On some levels, the only way to amass enough points for S is to use, say the spikes wisp, and just sit there whilst the power bar slowly drops.

Now there Is a limit to that and if you look under the score, it will say in red writing about no time bonus and that's the bonus points for the time in wisp form and not, as I first thought, that you get no bonus points for time when you complete the stage.

Red Rings also give 30,000 points each and that's another way to bag easy points.

Okay... I admit it, this game is actually pretty competent for a 3D Sonic game.

It has a welcome partnership of 3D speed runs and precision platforming, no stupid new characters tagging along for the ride and I can skip every horrible storyline cutscene if I want to. There is also no ridiculously out of place hub world full of deadheaded townsfolk, so that is also an immense boon.

Technically and compositionally this is probably the finest and definitive 3D Sonic to date. Sonic for once controls like a dream and not once did I unwillingly go on a very familiar Sonic Adventure and fall through solid ground and die.

It's just a shame it isn't fun to play at all. It really is.

What?! I've never had such fun playing a Sonic game and as it stands, Colours has to be one of my favourite games of 2010 behind Galaxy 2.

Seriously...How good is this game?!

As a HUGE Sonic fan as a kid (and never really enjoying anything but SA2 and the GBA/DS games,) this is a brilliant return to form. The cut scenes are genuinely OK as sonic and tails come across as great characters (not annoying). Dr Baldy McTash (as he eventually ends up getting called) is brilliant and everything is just enjoyable to experience. The sheen is amazing too, looking graphically superb.

The wisps add a ton of variety and I'm in love with a lot of the music:

Great to see another fan of the music here! Absolutely incredible stuff. I have it on my MP3 player too.

I don't have it on my music player (only SA2 stuff is on there right now) but I have been meaning to put it on. I downloaded the soundtrack as soon as I could - almost 500MB of greatness.

The only level music that doesn't really quite work for me is Starlight Carnival. It fits the location perfectly... I just aren't a big fan of it though. Tropical Resort is pretty by the numbers but still holds it's own. The other 5 worlds are belters though!

And I like how they have multiple version for each level as well to help mix it up and those alternates are equal footing with the original versions too. They are familiar and fresh at the same time.

Loving that! :D

Although it also makes me a bit sad, as it reminds me of another SEGA game (I'm sure you all know which one) that I really wanted to see on the Wii, but it doesn't look like it's going to happen now. :(

Anyway, I must admit, Sonic Colours has slipped under my radar. :woops: When I get my Wii back to fully working order though, I'll be sure to check it out.

And here's Act 2 for you RedShell - personally I prefer this to Act 1, but Act 1 is still jazzerrific :p And yes, you must check it out!

Love the music in Sonic and just listened to/watched the Intro's from Adventure, Heroes, Unleashed, Colours, plus City Escape. Instant joy right there!! :D

It's a rare day when a Sonic soundtrack leaves me disappointed. As shockingly terrible as 06's gameplay was, it still had a brilliant soundtrack.

City Escape is quite possibly my favorite opening level in a game ever - I find it such a joy to play through that I never get bored seeing it even after however many hundred times I've played it now. It's easily got to be my most played level ever.

Was city escape SA2? Can't remember the name but if it's the opening from that game it was amazing. And the music was stunning. Still remember the slap bass opening and the lyrics and everything.

Sonic Colours reminds me of that level but set in space obviously. My nephew (11) started playing this the other day and it has stopped his Little Kings Story addiction. Powerful stuff.

Yep, it's the first level with Sonic. I got that game at launch with my GC and whilst RS2 blew me away with it's graphics (and still does - no game that old, made that quick, should look that good), it couldn't match the sheer fun of Sonic. Playing that level reminded me of the time I was stood in GAME looking at one of the display screens demoing it's DC release and thinking how cool it looked and me wondering if I'd ever get to play it.

But back to Colours, it's a great game and for me, the best since SA2. Lots of levels and lots of variety within them levels too. It doesn't quite have the speed or spectacle of Unleashed HD, and never could, but then it doesn't have the Werehog either and is miles better than Sonic's previous Wii efforts.

Then again, there is something about having to put up with the crap parts that makes you appreciate the good parts even more. Here, it's pretty much all good and sometimes don't realize what an accomplishment that actually is and so it's easy to take it for granted.

Yeah. I definately get what you're saying. Playing the Knuckles stages in SA2 made me love the Sonic levels. Here it's aaaaaaall good.

May get Unleashed after finishing this.

Still, this may make that a disappointment. All those who have even had a passing interest in Sonic at some point should at least experience this.

I wasn't too bothered by the other modes. Yeah they weren't as good as Sonic's but for 2 or 3 mins of knock about fun, they sufficed. Normally it only takes me an min and half to do a knuckles level - if it takes longer, I'm slacking. I remember the Sunday night of that GC launch weekend, I was in Meteor Herd for 45 mins and ended up missing The X-Files but I was still enjoying it :p

If you are going to get Unleashed, unless it's the HD version, it would be wrong of me not to give you some warning that coming off the back of this, you will be disappointed. Not just in the Werehog stuff, but in the Sonic stuff as well. It still has great music, but the levels and controls are not up to scratch. The controls and levels of Colours are much closer to the design for HD. Plus it looks awfully bland in parts - probably due to the needs of the PS2 version.

If it's cheap enough, then it might be worth a venture if you go in with low expectations. I played the Wii version first and thought it a bit poor and then I got the HD version which made it seem even worse.

On the plus side, you'll think Sonic Colours is even better after having played it ;)

The intro of SA2 was really dissapointing after SA! City Escape is the unofficial intro for me.

Yeah funnily enough I was thinking of maybe getting Unleashed after I work may way through Colours, inspired by watching this awesome video the other day, as part of my Sonic theme songs marathon...

But yeah, it would really have to be the HD version which isn't an option atm, plus I'm not sure I could put up with going back to it after Colours and with the Werehog stages... which just from 10secs in that video look bad enough!

Think I'll just keep Sonic strong with Colours... and hope that the next Wii game is a strong one, they got a great game to build off of!

News: Sonic Colours Was Sega's Top Game in 2010

The Wii and DS title Sonic Colours was Sega's most successful game in 2010.

Sega Sammy's group sales and earnings for 2010 were recently published and according to Andriasang the Wii and DS game Sonic Colours was the company's top selling title. Sonic Colours sold 2.18 million units worldwide, over one million units ahead of the next biggest selling title Iron Man 2.

The company's earning report for the last financial year is a cause for celebration for the Sega Sammy group. Sales rose 3.1% over the year and operating income increased 87.3% to 68,750 million yen. While in Japan a lot of the profits came from their panchinko machines the company's biggest market was Europe. Across the twenty titles that the Sega Sammy group released last year 8.23 million units were sold in Europe, compared to 7.83 million units across 16 titles in America. Only 15 titles were released in Japan and they sold 2.63 million units, providing worldwide sales of 18.71 million units.

While Sonic Colours may have been their biggest selling title they enjoyed the most success on the PSP, followed closely by Xbox 360, PC, Wii and DS. The company expects the PS3 to be its highest earner in the upcoming financial year, followed by the 3DS which Sega Sammy are hoping to release 20 titles for. They are also hoping to release 11 titles for the Wii and anticipate it to be their third highest grossing platform in the next financial year.

Sonic features in several of the company's games for next year. Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games was recently announced for the Wii, DS and 3DS and is rumoured to be released around Christmas. Sega also announced Sonic Generations, a celebration of the hedgehog's 20 year anniversary, for various consoles but not for the Nintendo Wii, DS or 3DS. Hopefully they will announce a new Nintendo exclusive title at E3 next month.

Nintendo consoles deserve to be getting something great for the 25th Anniversary after that! Edited by Retro_Link

20th ;)

And at the back of the latest issue of Nintendo Power they hinted at something Sonic-related (but not olympics). Guessing they're holding out.

I posted in the Sonic Generations thread that we are apparently getting the game on 3DS..

Sonic Colors was the best selling SEGA game of last year??? But games don't sell on Wii!! Someone on these forums told me!!

Think of everything else Sega had that year as well...it's probably not a huge amount of quality titles.

Also, it was probably the biggest selling non-casual third party game on Wii full stop as well by probably a decent margin.

I think it still sold less than Secret Rings though.

I know some people enjoyed them, but looking back it's hard to believe they got the gameplay so wrong in Secret Rings/Knight(whatever)! It really was pretty aweful! Who wants to start off a Sonic game walking FFS!... and tilting everywhere!

I'd love to see this in HD...just so I could buy it all over again.

Still, shod have sold more but I dont blame the public.

Ths should be a word of mouth seller IMO as it's 'that' enjoyable.

No it wasn't! There were several third party titles that sold far more, including Monster Hunter, Black Ops, Goldeneye, Epic Mickey, Fifa 11 and I'm sure there are others.

Black Knight is wrong.

Secret Rings isn't really wrong, it's just that it starts off gimped and you earn better (and awesome) controls.

The game has a beautiful flow by the end if you customise yourself right,l with a great deal of strategy to be had in executing the perfect runs through levels with the right techniques.

By the end you're running full speed basically the second you start a level for the record!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EAWnAbi_Uis Here's an example. First few steps are slow, then suddenly, watch.

It's just got the stupid design flaw of extending replayability by making you earn good controls.

better video, for the record, not sped up, just using certain items. The colours are inverted though.
