Dante Posted September 26, 2009 Posted September 26, 2009 (edited) TGS Videos Demo Part 1 Demo Part 2 Gas Canaster (Off-Screen) Deathmatch. Gamespot Interview IGN's Hands-on. Before Crackdown came out, everybody viewed it as the $60 entry fee into the included Halo 3 beta. After those people got their hands on it, everyone realized they'd been duped into buying a quality action game. Now a new studio called Ruffian, comprised of many people that worked on the first game, has the pressure of living up to the high bar set by the original developer, RealTime Worlds. Funny how success breeds more pressure to succeed, isn't it? After getting my hands on Crackdown 2 for the first time and seeing which direction the sequel is headed in, Ruffian appears up to the challenge. The story goes like this: In the first Crackdown game, one your actions caused a chain reaction that has nearly destroyed the city. It seems that by assaulting a research facility, you've let loose an infected bunch of freaks which now run rampant throughout the city. During the daytime, the struggling survivors scavenge for whatever tools or goods they can find in the hopes of preparing themselves for the night. They mostly come out at night. Mostly. When the sun goes down, the freaks come out to play. We were given a quick glimpse of this difference between day and night. Humans and their gangs are what you might have to face off against in the light. As the sun sets, thousands of freaks will pour out into the streets to attack anything that moves. Learn how Pacific City has changed. Ruffian made it a point during the demo to recognize all of the flaws in the first Crackdown, as well as the successes. The hand-to-hand combat wasn't so good. The story wasn't all there. Most of the missions felt the same. They then went on to talk about how they plan to remedy each of those ailments and improve what worked. The orb hunting is back, this time with a few different types to hunt down. Combo attacks are being added, as is the ability to pick up scraps of the environment like a rebar with concrete to use as a weapon. A fully developed storyline has been added. And you can expect the missions to have a series of objectives rather than simply a target. Crackdown 2 is being built from the ground up as a four player cooperative experience. That's expanded from the first game's two player co-op, but the same core idea holds true. You and your friends will be free to work together, annoy each other, or simply run off to opposite sides of the city to do your own thing. You'll probably want to be together when you tackle a mission, though. We were shown one as an example where four separate wheels needed to be turned as the first step in a mission. You can stick together and watch each other's backs, or split up a bit and get through the mission four times as quickly as you otherwise could. From the looks of it, you may find yourself huddled together for protection more often than not. The freaks, we're told, are much stronger than any human you might come across. They come in mass quantities, too, which doesn't make your job any easier. They'll even follow you up walls and on to the rooftops. Thankfully, you have a few new weapons at your disposal. The main one on display was a UV gun that works a bit like a shotgun, only it spits out ultraviolet light that the freaks can't stand. The visuals in Crackdown 2 are about 60% complete we're told, which should help to explain the rather bland and rough look of the most recent videos in IGN's gallery. Even if the city itself isn't sparkling just yet, it has all of the necessary components to ensure the game is fun. The draw distance is fantastic. The toy box is there, as is the Keys to the City 2 (a sequel to the cheat mode Crackdown offered). And the physics system looks like it is sure to produce many, many wacky moments. Ruffian showed us a few of their favorites. First, we saw the Mag Grenade. Toss one on a car and it will stick. Toss another on a wall and a sort of energy bungee cord will be stretched between the two. Throw another and you can hang a car between two buildings. You can imagine the possibilities, but perhaps not what the demoer did next. With the car still attached to the Mag Grenades, he pulled it back and then flung it forward like a slingshot. It slammed into another car and exploded on impact. The Mag Grenade also works wonders with another toy. Little gas canisters exist in the city which, if shot at the edges, will turn into makeshift missiles. Attach one to the ground and then break off the end and you'll get a missile zipping around like a fly tethered to the ground. Or then there was a huge chimney that you could find, just waiting to be filled with explosives… Unfortunately, we didn't get to play around in this toy box. Instead, the portion of the demo that we got to try was the newly added 16 player deathmatch. It plays out pretty exactly how you'd expect it. Agents leap around from rooftop to rooftop, doing their best to shoot other agents out of the sky. If you get close enough and aim well enough, you can pull the left trigger to lock on to your opponent. It's a pretty integral move given the inherent mobility of your target. Though the base gameplay is standard in this deathmatch, a few Crackdown twists have been added to the mix. Little launch pads exist around the map to quickly get you up on a roof. Weapons can be found to change up your fighting style. There are power-ups to grab -- my favorite is the temporary invincibility, indicated by a crown floating over the player's head. Points are awarded for kills, with bonus points for the tough melee kills. There's also a leveling system in Crackdown 2's deathmatch that is separate from that of the main game. Ruffian declined to go into details on it, but we were told that the experience orbs that spill out after each kill will help you to level up and unlock new goodies. The deathmatch mode in Crackdown 2 is pretty fun, though a bit chaotic and frenzied. The level we got to play on didn't have any vehicles, which could add another dimension of insanity on top of what's already there. As it is, this adversarial mode definitely has its own unique feel to it, but I'm not totally sold on it just yet. The first Crackdown game was a surprise hit. This one won't sneak out of left field. It's good to see that the folks working on it know what made the last game so much fun and are pushing the limits. We'll have to wait until 2010 to see how the final product turns out, but anybody who loved the last game shouldn't sit up at night worrying about this one. It's looking right on track. New screens: Boxart! Edited September 26, 2009 by Dante
Daft Posted December 13, 2009 Posted December 13, 2009 Looks like Prototype except not utter shit. I'm still not keen on mutants in this game but we'll see. Loved the first one.
James McGeachie Posted December 14, 2009 Posted December 14, 2009 This game seems utterly pointless. It feels like I may as well be watching videos of an expansion pack or DLC to the first game. I can't believe they decided to put a sequel in the same city, even if it has changed slightly. The trailer seriously does look like the same game with a few new moves, only the way it's been cut together kind of hides that fact by giving you different angles on things.
gaggle64 Posted December 14, 2009 Posted December 14, 2009 Oh hell yeah, that's looks hot as god damn. I wonder how many can play in co-op? The first one's 2 player mode was fantastic (on the few occasions it worked.)
Mundi Posted December 14, 2009 Posted December 14, 2009 Was there not talk of it being 4 player? Dunno if that goes for co-op too.
Daft Posted December 14, 2009 Posted December 14, 2009 I can't believe they decided to put a sequel in the same city, even if it has changed slightly. That's a good point. I completely forgot that.
James McGeachie Posted December 15, 2009 Posted December 15, 2009 (edited) ^Yeah I think most people will have but it's something that sticks firmly in my head as it completely put me off the game. Having the same city twice kind of worked in the GTA PSP games as GTA is a more story oriented franchise...but a big part of Crackdown was exploring the city and finding all the hidden orbs and shit. The last thing I want to do is all of that again in the same city and there are blatantly (completely identical!) agility orbs in the screenshots! They said the city has "changed" but it's still the same city and you get that feeling prominently from screens. Maybe it's a bit different now but the trailer felt exactly like the first game to me, just with some extra features. Putting the sequel in the same city defeats the point of what was said at the end of the first game. "Pacific city is only the beginning". Edited December 15, 2009 by James McGeachie
Dante Posted February 11, 2010 Posted February 11, 2010 Wired preview Crackdown 2 will also feature “renegade orbs” that don’t just sit still — they move around the city, and you’ve got to chase them, Noonan said. You’ll also be able to take to the skies more effectively — later in the game, you’ll get a gliding ability that lets you soar through the levels, though not indefinitely. And there’s an Agency helicopter that you’ll earn towards the very end of the game, making the entire city your oyster. The mission structure of the first game, in which you were largely tracking down crime bosses and then assassinating them in their secret lairs, is getting tweaked for the sequel. Now, there’s a wider variety of missions. You might have to recover parts of a super weapon that the Agency is building to destroy the Freak invasion, you might have to go into the Freak Lairs underground and wipe them out, etc.

Daft Posted May 26, 2010 Posted May 26, 2010 I REALLY hate that it's gone from sunny and colourful to grey. I mean, WHAT THE FUCK?
dwarf Posted May 26, 2010 Posted May 26, 2010 Those comparison photos are surprising. Because there isn't much to compare - it's gone from decent graphics to slightly more decent graphics.
Dante Posted June 21, 2010 Posted June 21, 2010 Crackdown 2 demo is on marketplace and features character leveling, four-player co-op and achievements.
Dan_Dare Posted June 22, 2010 Posted June 22, 2010 the graphical changes really do give me sadface. It's so lame. still, the demo plays really well. The rooftop leaps are exhilarating, the combat is full of that sandbox lunacy you expect and it handles well technically. 4-Player is going to kick arse no matter what.

Dyson Posted July 1, 2010 Posted July 1, 2010 Demo is finally enabled for Silver users so I'm gonna get this badboy downloaded. I really should play the first one again, I only got 2 or so hours in to it. I wonder if I'll enjoy it more having been a big fan of APB..
Nintenchris Posted July 1, 2010 Posted July 1, 2010 Cant wait for this next week, im seriously worried its to much like the first... being the same city doesnt help.
Cube Posted July 2, 2010 Posted July 2, 2010 When you get Crackdown 2 you will unlock a brand new character called Agent 4. Although the new character won't be playable in Crackdown 2 at all... Pretty neat, albeit a bit random.
Nintenchris Posted July 4, 2010 Posted July 4, 2010 Been watching someones "lets play" of this on youtube and i must say it realy realy realy is the same game as the first... i wish they had changed alot more.. knowing me ill still buy it
LegoMan1031 Posted July 8, 2010 Posted July 8, 2010 I will be getting this at some point as i did really enjoy the first and im a sucker for sequels of games i enjoyed. However as u said above i played the demo and while i enjoyed it, its just the first game again but with some zombies really...
Rummy Posted July 12, 2010 Posted July 12, 2010 So they haven't really done much new with this then? Anyone here actually got it/some opinions?
