Goafer Posted May 15, 2009 Posted May 15, 2009 (edited) I decided to play through some of my Playstation 1 games. The beaty of buying a bundle with 200 games is that I got a tonne of games I had never heard of before. I found a few great games in amongst the shit. Which gave me the idea of making this thread. So here is a few games that are lesser known (at least to me)that are actually a bit special. Playstation 1 Moto Racer 2 Surprisingly quick for a PS1 game. Basically motorbike racing divided into 2 catagories: Superbike and Motorcross. Bit fiddly to control but amazingly quick racing. Overboard You control a ye olde boat and generally shoot stuff with cannons. Quite simple, but fun. Didn't play much of it, but I'll definately re-visit it. Speed Freaks Not sure how hidden this one is, but it's a pretty good kart game. Nothing really sets it apart from the others, but it just works well. Definately worth a look if you like power up based racing. Saturn Steep Slope Sliders A decent snowboarding game with fairly simple, but functional controls. Loved the demo of this when I was younger. Need to track down the full copy methinks. Baku Baku Animal A tetris/columns style game where you need to match the animal to the food. Build a big group of the same food blocks then chuck an animal onto it. good simple fun. Clockwork Knight A platformer where you play a toy knight. Run and jump through levels whilst twatting things with your key-sword. Similar in style to Toy Story. Dreamcast San Francisco Rush 2049 A sort of stunt racing game. When the car gets launched skywards by a ramp or hill, you can press a button to deploy wings which allow you to control the cars pitch and roll to do some rad flips. Players can participate in normal races or stunt arenas. Add in some gold and silver medals hidden in some genuiniely hard to find areas and you have a pretty darn good game. Revolt Pretty standard RC racing affair, but with a toy shops worth of cars to chose from. Plus the handling mananges to find a pretty close likeness to real RC cars whilst staying fun. Confidential Mission A gun game where you play a pair of spies. Some pretty neat use of the DC light gun, an example of which has you shooting a zip wire in order to skip past some of the enemies. I'd love to see a version of this on the Wii, if only for the smarmy male agent. Playstation 2 Disaster Report A "survival horror" game without the horror. There are no enemies, instead the player must survive the aftershocks of a massive earthquake. Never played it (not even sure it got a PAL release), but I'm going to have to track down a copy. It's low budget, but it stands out for its good pacing, rarely leaving the player with nothing to do and doesn't rely on backtracking. It had a sequel too called Raw Danger. Penny Racers Also called Choro Q I think. Basically some cute cars trundle around in a cute fashion. What sets it apart is the changes the player can make to their car. Wings, floats and skis can be added to allow the player to get over different terrain (or skip areas in the case of the wings). Add to that a selection of "cuteified" real life cars, albeit without their real names, and it makes a pretty addictive racer. Yakuza Basically Shenmue, but centred around the Japanese Mafia. The combat is a vast improvement over Shenmue, which is a good job, since there is a lot more fighting in Yakuza. Quick Time Events are gone though. The game was praised for being quite faithful to real Yakuza lifestyles and events. Xbox Psychonauts Now available on the Live Marketplace, Psychonauts is a genuinely funny and unique platform game. You play Raz, a psychic who goes off to psychic summer camp. Cue lots of wacky platforming adventures in various peoples noodles. Hopefully more people have played this since it was released on XBLA, since it didn't sell too well on the Xbox AFAIK. Gun Valkyrie A rock hard third person shooter. Control a be-jetpacked dude or dudette and shoot some aliens. I don't think I get very far in this at all, might have to give it another crack soon. Freedom Fighters Take on some commie scum as a kick ass American. Fairly heavy on the patriotism, but it feels pretty good to play a rebel, especially amongst all the current games where you play the good ol' military. I'll leave the Nintendo ones up to you guys. You probably know a lot more than me in that area (not that I'm an expert in the above consoles by a long mile!). Any more for any more? Edited May 15, 2009 by Goafer
Dyson Posted May 15, 2009 Posted May 15, 2009 Overboard You control a ye olde boat and generally shoot stuff with cannons. Quite simple, but fun. Didn't play much of it, but I'll definately re-visit it. Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant, brilliant game.
Goafer Posted May 15, 2009 Author Posted May 15, 2009 Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant, brilliant game. I was flicking through my wallet-o-games and noticed it. The name sounded really familiar so I put it on. I've no idea where I've played it before, but I'm sure I've played it somewhere.
Happenstance Posted May 15, 2009 Posted May 15, 2009 Speed Freaks Not sure how hidden this one is, but it's a pretty good kart game. Nothing really sets it apart from the others, but it just works well. Definately worth a look if you like power up based racing. As goaferboy probably remembers, I loved this game! Used to spend hours with a group of friends playing through. One of the few racers that I could do that with.
Roostophe Posted May 15, 2009 Posted May 15, 2009 Confidential Mission A gun game where you play a pair of spies. Some pretty neat use of the DC light gun, an example of which has you shooting a zip wire in order to skip past some of the enemies. Fairly heavy on the patriotism, but it feels pretty good to play a rebel, especially amongst all the current games where you play the good ol' military. I remember playing a demo of Confidential Mission. 'Twas alright, but I never bought the game. Freedom Fighters, however, kicked arse. Sometimes it was a bit too American for my liking but I enjoyed it a lot. Great game.
Jonnas Posted May 15, 2009 Posted May 15, 2009 I remember playing a demo of Overboard in a friend's PS1. Good times. I know quite a few Gameboy games that rarely get the praise they deserve: Wario Land 3: The most underrated of the series. It is also my favourite. Donkey Kong (GB): Despite the name, it has barely anything to do with the original DK. It's a puzzle platformer, and a big one at that. Pretty good, but very unnoticed. Megaman V (GB): Possibly the best in the classic MM series, but is rarely mentioned. Deserves recognition. Mole Mania: Those who've seen me post about this game know I love it. 'Tis a very charming puzzle game, made by Myamoto himself.
Pookiablo Posted May 15, 2009 Posted May 15, 2009 Body Harvest (N64) Seriously, give this game a go. Takes a while to get into but once you are, it's pretty epic!
Roostophe Posted May 16, 2009 Posted May 16, 2009 Future Cop: LAPD - PS1 I think it's been 'bout 10 years since I played this. Bah!
MoogleViper Posted May 16, 2009 Posted May 16, 2009 Ok games I have from that list. Overboard - Never actually had the game but had the demo and thought it was good. Not enough to buy it though. Speed Freaks - Loved this game. Much better than CTR and way underrated. Revolt - Liked this. Was a good multiplayer but I could never really be bothered with one player. Yakuza - This isn't hidden. It's an amazing game. Both 1 and 2. Definitely in my top 5 games.
Goafer Posted May 17, 2009 Author Posted May 17, 2009 Rollcage and Future Cop were awesome. May have to track them down. Snail Maze (MS) Now this one was literally hidden. You could access it by starting up a Master System (I think it has to be a Master System 1) with no cartridge in and pressing Up and both buttons on the pad.
Nolan Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 Brain Lord-SNESDon't ask me about rarity cuz idk. This is a great game from my childhood though. A fun action RPG romp, with some pretty good brain teasers spread throughout the game. Earthworm Jim-Multiple PlatformsJust an excellent and funny platformer. Loved it. Populous-Multi PlatGod Simulator that I sunk hours into. Very fun and quite time consuming.
Fused King Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 (edited) Wow, I see a lot of PS1 titles here....so I thought, why not include one more! This game is the absolute champion in my childhood when I still had a PS1 (Next to Day of the Tentacle on the PC):bowdown: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MADvdMk0KXU Edited May 17, 2009 by Fused King

But would they be classed as hidden gems? I thought they were quite popular.
Fused King Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 Hmmmm, well I guess I had a limited view back in the day, because I felt quite honored to have this game:awesome:
mcj metroid Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 Rollcage - PS1 Oh the memories... brilliant brilliant .. better than wipeout!.. the rollcage:stage 2 kinda sucked though I forget why but I didn't like it for ps1 i gotta go with this: quite frankly brillliant and unlike anything else..
Dyson Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 better than wipeout! Lies, slander, and complete falsehood. Nothing is better than wipeout. It's the game that's caused me to bring my PS1 out year after year. Classic.
dwarf Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 If you love Wipeout so much Dyson why don't you get the HD version? It's worth all that dosh!
nekunando Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 (edited) Rally Cross (PS1) My friend had this back in the day.. and it was really fun I have it myself now that I have a PS1 and I still love it Pong (PS1) I'm not sure if this is still as fun as it was.. but I remember playing this loads with 4 players when me and my friends would basically see each other every night (amongst many other games ) ..but Pong was great fun Top Gear Rally (N64) Not really sure if you could call it 'hidden', but this is one of my favourite games.. it is fantastic TG Rally 2 (N64) Probably not as well known as the first Top Gear Rally on the N64.. and it was very different.. but it was still fantastic It was difficult though.. Tom & Jerry (SNES) Childhood memories probably have a lot to do with this choice.. but I still think it is a pretty decent and challenging game having played through it last year.. good times Kid Klown in Crazy Chase (SNES) I have to remember to pick this up some day.. it was quality and had pretty catchy music Super Soccer (SNES) Gret music.. Great game (and possibly still my favourite football game ever.. though it was the first game I ever had so I guess that counts for a lot ) ..and using manual goalkeepers was so good and you felt in complete control : peace: Edited May 17, 2009 by nekunando
