Happenstance Posted May 5, 2011 Posted May 5, 2011 To be honest its just gonna be back when its back, nothing we can do but wait.
flameboy Posted May 5, 2011 Posted May 5, 2011 To be honest its just gonna be back when its back, nothing we can do but wait. That's true and yes they have to get their end of things 100% in order before they get online BUT I still think all of this is being communicated terribly, this much uncertainty etc...is damaging them even further, i they were doing excellent job of letting people know what was going on then fair enough but they aren't
Aimless Posted May 6, 2011 Posted May 6, 2011 Well Sony are apparently in "the final stages of internal testing", so as long as nothing else goes wrong I presume the service will be up, at least in some capacity, come Saturday.
Hero-of-Time Posted May 6, 2011 Posted May 6, 2011 Rumour time. A group of hackers says it is planning another wave of cyberattacks against Sony in retaliation for its handling of the PlayStation Network breach. An observer of the Internet Relay Chat channel used by the hackers told CNET today that a third major attack is planned this weekend against Sony's Web site. The people involved plan to publicize all or some of the information they are able to copy from Sony's servers, which could include customer names, credit card numbers, and addresses, according to the source. The hackers claim they currently have access to some of Sony's servers. Should the planned attack succeed, it would be the latest blow in a series of devastating security breaches of Sony's servers over the past month. The failure of Sony's server security has ignited investigations by the FBI, the Department of Justice, Congress, and the New York State Attorney General, a well as data security and privacy authorities in the U.K., Canada, and Taiwan. Several weeks ago the hacker group known as Anonymous targeted several Sony Web sites, including Sony.com and SonyStyle.com, with a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack in retaliation for what its members saw as Sony's unfair legal action against hacker George Hotz. Two weeks ago Sony's PlayStation Network, along with its Qriocity service and Sony Online, were the target of an attack that exposed the personal information of more than 100 million Sony customers. Sony was forced to shut down PSN, Qriocity, and Sony Online, and is currently working to bring them back online after rebuilding the security of its servers. Sony says it doesn't know who orchestrated what it's calling a "highly sophisticated, planned" attack, but it has dropped hints that the group Anonymous is involved. Kazuo Hirai, chairman of Sony Computer Entertainment, told a Congressional subcommittee in a letter yesterday that the intruders on its servers planted a file named "Anonymous" containing the statement "We are Legion," part of the group's tagline. Anonymous issued a statement yesterday denying it was involved in the PSN breach. "While we are a distributed and decentralized group, our 'leadership' does not condone credit card theft," the statement said. Now it seems the same group of hackers that was able to infiltrate the PSN servers is planning to hit back against Sony. Sony did not immediately respond to a request for comment. http://news.cnet.com/8301-31021_3-20060227-260.html?tag=cnetRiver
ReZourceman Posted May 6, 2011 Posted May 6, 2011 These X360 fanboys are getting out of hand now. I mean I've seen jealousy before but this is getting ridiculous.
Cube Posted May 6, 2011 Posted May 6, 2011 The worst kind of hackers are the ones who say that they're doing it for a cause that is a complete lie.
Diageo Posted May 6, 2011 Posted May 6, 2011 I don't exactly get what the cause is. What's the cause of the retaliation?
Pit-Jr Posted May 6, 2011 Posted May 6, 2011 The worst kind of hackers are the ones who say that they're doing it for a cause that is a complete lie. I can't think of a good kind of hacker, because 100 percent of them are riding someone else's dick, unless they're hacking themselves for some reason. Ok maybe Jeff Goldblum in Independence Day but thats about it.
Cube Posted May 6, 2011 Posted May 6, 2011 I don't exactly get what the cause is. What's the cause of the retaliation? The best known reason is that these people hate Sony because they are preventing the use of homebrew on the PS3. Note: The methods that allow homebrew also allow pirated games to be played on the console.
Tales Posted May 6, 2011 Posted May 6, 2011 (edited) To put a face on some of them: This is from when they attacked the website of the largest party in government coalition because they accepted a law the EU pushed one us. It's the one about increased electronic monitoring to prevent terrorism. They are standing in front of the government building. Edited May 6, 2011 by Tales
flameboy Posted May 6, 2011 Posted May 6, 2011 Some news... Both Kazuo Hirai and Sir Howard Stringer have stated that we will be offering identity theft protection for those affected by the malicious attack on PlayStation Network and many of you may have seen the details of the service available in North America. As I have explained previously, creating a similar offering for the many countries within the SCEE region is a very complicated process. Each country has a different way of handling identity theft; some offer relatively sophisticated services whilst others are much more modest. We are currently in the process of identifying how we manage this situation and once the programme is ready to launch, we will provide details of exactly which services are available in each country and explain how to sign up. We hope to do this early next week. Also, look out for more information on the rest of our Welcome Back programme, including which free content you will be eligible for. We will be offering PSN users the opportunity to select two PS3 games from a list of five, as well as offering PSP users the opportunity to choose two games from a list of four. We will let you know exactly what games are available very soon. Please be assured that we are continuing to work around the clock to have some PlayStation Network and Qriocity services restored and will provide you with specific details shortly. So interesting to read...does this mean if you own both you get both? Also guess if you have multi accounts you get more stuff? I have my main account and then a US and JPN one.... Hopefully the selection of games will be alright....likely to be older stuff I guess, also presumably for it to be a proper incentive for PS+ users needs to be stuff thats not been given away on that.
Cube Posted May 6, 2011 Posted May 6, 2011 They would have to be 1st Party games. My predictions: - inFamous - Uncharted 2 - Killzone 2 - Motorstorm/Motorstorm Pacific Rift - Resistance 2 Unless they mean smaller downloadable games.
LegoMan1031 Posted May 6, 2011 Posted May 6, 2011 I would assume that it would be more arcade type games... but you never know i suppose!
flameboy Posted May 6, 2011 Posted May 6, 2011 I would assume that it would be more arcade type games... but you never know i suppose! I dunno I guess they could be full releases! I mean on PSP what is there thats not a mini, ps1 or a full release (granted a lot are very very reduced) I hope Cube that your choices are wrong cos I own all of them except Motorstorm which I have owned.

It's just that the downloadable titles are a PS+ thing. The ones I predicted all have recent or upcoming sequels, so they'll also be a form of advertising.

Daft Posted May 6, 2011 Posted May 6, 2011 I'll have ModNation Racers a thank you very much Sony. Give it to meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.
drahkon Posted May 6, 2011 Posted May 6, 2011 Am I getting this right? Every PSN user is getting a free game?
flameboy Posted May 7, 2011 Posted May 7, 2011 Am I getting this right? Every PSN user is getting a free game? two free games from a choice of five for PS3 owners and two from four for PSP users.
flameboy Posted May 7, 2011 Posted May 7, 2011 Yeah so PSN isn't gonna be back this weekend; As you may know, we’ve begun the process of restoring the service through internal testing of the new system. We’re still working to confirm the security of the network infrastructure, as well as working with a variety of outside entities to confirm with them of the security of the system. Verifying the system security is vital for the process of restoration. Additional comprehensive system checks and testing are still required, and we must complete that process before bringing the systems online. As you’ve heard us say, our utmost priorities are the security of the network and ensuring your data is safe. We won’t restore the services until we can test the system’s strength in these respects. When we held the press conference in Japan last week, based on what we knew, we expected to have the services online within a week. We were unaware of the extent of the attack on Sony Online Entertainment servers, and we are taking this opportunity to conduct further testing of the incredibly complex system. We know many of you are wanting to play games online, chat with your friends and enjoy all of the services PlayStation Network and Qriocity services have to offer, and trust me when I say we’re doing everything we can to make it happen. We will update you with more information as soon as we have it. We apologize for the delay and inconvenience of this network outage. http://blog.eu.playstation.com/2011/05/07/service-restoration-update/
