Posted July 22, 2010 It is not meh, how much did you play? It's a lot more fun than gta, that's for sure, and to me felt very different to gta4 which I honestly didn't think was that great. Just whittling the time away, having 5% enjoyment, 90% boredom 5% irritance. Mehhry. I guess I could socialise...? I seem to make money from it at least. Posted July 23, 2010 I'd suggest you sign up to LoveFilm or similar, dwarf. You should be able to get a month's free trial relatively easy and I find it a great remedy to that "kind of want to play something" feeling as you can add a load of games you're not too sure about to a list, wait and see what gets sent out and then play through it without the same sense of commitment as an actual purchase. For instance I wouldn't have bought NIER but I'm glad I rented it, as despite all its failings it's both bizarre and interesting. In fact I have '3 months for the price of 1' LoveFilm redemption code that I can't use and should still be valid. Combine that with the Unlimited & Games package — 2 discs at once, unlimited rentals each month — and you'd be able to get through a lot of games for £15. Posted July 23, 2010 I tend to subscribe for a few months at a time, using that window to hoover up everything I've missed in the interim. It doesn't stop me buying games, just gives me a cheaper way to experience all the B grade games I wouldn't have bought, like the latest PoP or Singularity; enjoyable games, often with interesting ideas, that don't quite have the polish or longevity you'd like from a £35 purchase. The thing is I'm not really a renter, I know free months of rentals is good but I like to be able to buy games and then sell them at break even or profit, or If I like it enough I'll keep it. The thing with rentals - I actually find not being committed to a game (i.e. not owning it) probably makes your experience with it less...important? I borrowed Bioshock and found it to be pretty lame, and I never bothered to complete it because I didn't feel I needed to. If I'd bought it I may have stuck with the thing and perhaps I may have appreciated it more. Also, I don't really want a steady stream of decent games, because that's what it'll devolve into. Unlike films, which largely feel unique to each other and at least have their own qualities, most games that are similar to the 'top-tier' games for me aren't worth bothering with. Eg. Dark Void is a good example, I just wouldn't try it because it's an average cover based shooter, that isn't as good as other shooters. So any suggestions would really have to be a fairly standout game, or a different one, something with high quality. Ya know? Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
Posted July 23, 2010 Fair enough. Personally I like dabbling in all sorts as most games still have good ideas behind them or contributions to make, even if they aren't the best thing ever. I also complete every game I rent, so evidently the throwaway factor doesn't negatively affect me. I suppose I just like being knowledgeable of the bigger picture and experiencing things that didn't quite work out rather than, say, putting another 10 hours into an online game I already know I like. I'm not expecting to come across something with an overall quality comparable to Uncharted 2, but I will end up playing things that are far less conservative. Basically I don't see much point in going to the same restaurant each week and ordering the same thing. Is £199.99 on Amazon the regular price for a new machine, or are there better deals to be had? Or £194.99 on Play marketplace with a £20 PSN card??? I would probably be looking at an iPod Touch... Yeah but, Final Fantasy VII, VIII and IX. Yeah... :p Plus I REALLY f***ing hate Apple. I accept many, many people appreciate what they've contributed to the technology industry and I have lots of apple fans as friends. But on a personal note as an early adopter of the 30gb (4th gen) iPod, I was unimpressed. It broke 5 times in a year and eventually my warranty ran out and I was left with nothing Since then I've had a troublesome iPod video and iPhone 2.5g and in the end I just gave up. For me they release over-priced, (generally) low quality, unreliable goods. They seem to appeal well to the gadget geek demographic well and while I commend them for how they've pushed boundaries, the way the operate in terms of a business strategy pisses me off. 13 suicides in 6 months within their Chinese workforce to provide the West with overpriced goods. I'd rather just leave them and their products. No company is perfect, but for me, Apple are not a company I would like to have any of my money.
