On a Nintendo machine? Metroid Prime. Some of the best level design i've ever seen in a game. Shame Retro seem to have misplaced their talent since then.

On a non Nintendo machine: Shadow of the Colossus. Everything every other game wants, and fails to be.

I'll say F-Zero GX because with Metroid and other games we already expected to be great, but f-zero was a complete surprise. Of course this also applys to other games.

Resident Evil 4. I never really found Resi games fantastic, i enjoyed them..but hated the difficulty and saving idea in all the others...

Resident Evil 4 turned out to be everything i ever wanted and much MUCH more.

It flowed well. It controlled better. The saving was great. The graphics were excellent. The levels beautiful. ROLL ON Resi 5 and lets hope it's like Number 4!

I'm going to be different. Resident Evil remake was a very big shock. A shock that they actually put sooo much effort into remaking that game. Loads of extra content, awesome graphics and sound. It was just a perfect example of a remake.

I voted for Prime in that list because Retro Studios actually managed to get me into the Metroid universe with that game.

Metroid Prime and Resi 4 on gamecube. And also I know it was a long time ago, but I was really impressed by 3D GTA at the time.

I don't think F-Zero GX was a shock, we all pretty much knew that it was going to be awesome, and the same couldn't really be said about Metroid.

Quite the opposite actually, Metroid was hated from its first showing right up until near release. The expectation for Metroid Prime was that it would be an average game at best.

I really don't remember it like that, every vid released proved it was gonna be awesome. Personaly I had no doubts.

I went for other simply because none of those games were a surprise. Knew Animal Crossing was coming to the cube as it was a port of the N64 title Animal Forest. A F-Zero sequel was always gonna be on the cards, and it was know way back in the N64 era that a 3D Metroid was in development for a while, remember reading about it in an old copy of N64 Mag.

For something to be a surprise for me it either has to be an unexpected title or a new IP, so my vote would go to either Pikmin or Eternal Darkness.

I bought that game on PS2 recently, and like Ico, I don't really 'get' it. Might have to play more to see if I can get into it.

Hmm, many a game for me(on gc), hard to choose really. Pikmin was really original and addictive, then there was metroid prime my first metroid game, and RE4 was bluddy brilliant, my first ever RE game too. Paper Mario? Could I count that, I dunno...I guess this is just turning into a list of all my favourite games.

Starfox Adventures.

Everyone said it was shit but I really enjoyed, so that was quite a shock!

If not that then maybe Pikmin, completed it in an afternoon but still very entertaining.

Burnout. My dad bought it for me with my GC as an innocuous accompaniment to the main event (Rogue Squadron, Pikmin ect.) Little did we know at the time that we would be the among the earliest adopters (and eventually the most ardent fans) of one of the finest series to emerge that generation.

no one should be surprised by nintendo games being good. What is surprising is when they are bad (can only think of Doshin at the moment.)

Agree that burnout was awsome and got be back into racing games... however that made owning a cube and not an xbox more frustrating
