That nintendo game you just didn't like
Sheikah replied to mcj metroid's topic in General Gaming Discussion
Real life is entirely different...you can fully grasp the physics of jumping in real life and where you are in relation to the floor. Try jumping a platform in a video game where your character is invisible (which is basically what it's like), and where the physics feel different. There's no doubt that platforming is a lot trickier in games where you can't see yourself, and made easier only by getting used to it. That's not something to be proud of. The fact Nintendo haven't been bothered to better their consoles much since the gamecube is really a negative. As long as someone has any other current gen consoles they can always pick up the hugely superior Bioshock. -
Seeing as I last posted a picture here in 1802, and I don't want to post an embarassing one from the archives of facebook, here's one of me (sat in front of an electrical hazard):

I wasn't all that impressed...it's a bit dumbed down and nowhere near the fast-paced brilliance of Screenwipe. Having an audience there to laugh doesn't work quite as well as the silence you normally get...heh. It's better when he's rattling off loads of words rather than less content with minor celebrities having their input. Some parts of it weren't bad though, so it's still worth watching.

I agree with your points, really, which is why I found it odd that he nitpicked the emulator screenshots and said that they were worse than the originals. Sure, if you were talking about playing both original and emulator on small 480p sets then the original may look the same or perhaps better, as it looks as it was intended, but failing to take into account the huge benefits for medium HD sets and above (surely where it's at, these days) is a huge error.

At the pace it's going, I see no possibility for Brotherhood to be 26 episodes.

I would have to disagree. Again, I refer you to Banjo Kazooie which was recently brought to the Xbox Live Arcade in a touched-up, HD remake. It looks far better than the the original game does on my 32" TV; running the original cartridge looks significantly blurred. I still believe that the Mario Galaxy pictures in this topic look better than the 480p in-game counterparts when playing via component hook-up. I'm sure you would too, if someone posted 480p pictures of the same size side-by-side with the ones in this topic. Even though I use a component connection, Wii games still look quite blurred on a HDTV of reasonable size. That's just the way it is. I think the biggest problem here is that you're picking on details with what is, let's face it, a non-perfect emulation of the game. This isn't trying to make every texture and lighting effect perfect; it's trying to show you what Wii games could have been like, had Nintendo been bothered to make the console display in HD. I'm sure if they had gone for HD, pictures from the game would have looked much better. It's a taster, and the pictures still look better than what I saw playing the game anyway, in my eyes.
-
HD implies none of those. Developers are free to apply whatever graphical effects they want; HD refers solely to the resolution that the game is displayed at. Naturally, any game that runs at a higher resolution will only look better than the same game ran at a lower resolution (even old games like Banjo Kazooie on XBLA are proving this). It produces, unarguably, a more detailed and sharper image. I don't even know why you're arguing this tbh. Anyone who linked up an Xbox 360 or PS3 to a HDTV via HDMI who toggled between HD and non-HD resolution would find this out very easily.
-
How is that contradiction? You might want to look up the term contradiction, because nowhere does it not allow for what I've said. The pictures evidently don't look as good as they could, but there's no doubt that a crisper, higher quality image looks far better in the end. HD does NOT necessarily = good graphics, HD = non-smeared, crisp graphics that would otherwise look like turd on a good set. And I use a good set. If you want me to post up some HD vs non-HD comparison pictures to disprove you, just give the word. *Sigh*. Some people in this day and age really do still believe that HD makes no difference.
-
No matter which way you look at it, the HD images look far better than standard resolution. Any problems you're pointing out are likely to do with the game not being have made for HD to begin with. Also, Mario Galaxy's graphics were defined by original lighting effects; the lighting in the game is just like in those HD pictures. It's a shame that Nintendo didn't make their console HD, as the Xbox proves that you can have HD graphics and a reasonably cheap console. Even if people (bizarrely) didn't want HD graphics, they could always set the thing to 480p instead via the settings. PS: Is just pure win.

Yes. You win one, manufactured by Mr. Kipling. *Is no longer disappointed.

I am disappointed that your username probably isn't taken from PSO.

I have a nice idea for the IRC chatroom - a trivia feature. One where every member can answer the pop-up trivia to win points, which are stored on a high score table. I remember it being quite addictive back in the day, and it's definitely something that causes people to stick around.

1.2 times the quality? That's really not right at all. A lot of people don't have a 'HD' eye. My mother can't see any difference at all, despite me being able to see sweat on people's faces when switching from BBC1 to BBC HD. By the way, I'm sure someone could compare the resolutions of standard and 1080p resolutions, and the increase would be much more than 20%!

I would agree. And the MGS2 ending was easily the most up its own arse, and therefore worst of them all. :p

Precipitation One More Time, Can You McPheel It?
Sheikah replied to Dannyboy-the-Dane's topic in General Chit Chat
Happy Birthday from the Sheiker (thanks Dante), may your day be filled with ROFLMAO and cheer, and good spirit(s). -
I hated WLM eventually since it would always just hang on the signing in screen. At first I could fix it by deleting the 'hosts' file, but eventually that stopped working too. Now I use Pidgin, which is basically as good and without all the clutter. I like it.

Zelda puzzles are mostly artificial, and unrelated to the environment; often a series of block puzzles that unnaturally causes a door to open. What I mean is that there is often no natural link to the puzzle being solved and why you're suddenly able to go through the next door. This is true for many games. There's are occasional exceptions to this; e.g. Octorok freezing to use them as platforms in Majora's Mask, or causing light to appear for your mirror shield, but most often it's elimination of enemies or block moving /switch hitting /torch lighting that causes your advance to the next room. I would strongly argue against that for Metroid, at least the MP series. Killing enemies is far more common than in Zelda games, but that's to be expected of an FPS. To be honest, though, many adventure games involve gaining abilities, but again, I think the abilities you gain themselves would have to be similar to draw similarities between games; not just considering that you gain abilities in both. But these differences undoubtedly make the two series hugely different. Not just that one is a FPS and another is an action adventure series, but that Metroid involves constant dungeoneering and lacks the NPC interaction and worldwide exploration (e.g. via boat or horse across the globe). These differences leave the series feeling hugely different, at least to me. -

I wouldn't say that an FPS and action adventure game are very similar. The only similarity is that you have to puzzle solve/eliminate enemies in both MP and Zelda dungeons, but the methods that you go about this are very different. I suppose if you used that to compare, you could say many games are similar, since you often need to kill enemies to advance or solve mini-puzzles. In fairness, a lot of people have probably tried Metroid games if they have Nintendo systems, since it's considered a flagship title. I just found that both 2D and 3D iterations weren't really the thing for me. :/ -

Well I completed MP, and it definitely wasn't hard. It's just not that enjoyable. Harvesting what story there is by repeatedly scanning monitors here and there is just nonsense. It mostly is down to the gameplay...it's as simple as what you do in Zelda being more fun than what you do in Metroid games, for the majority. The setting, for one, is usually a lot nicer than in the Metroid games. Overall, Zelda and Metroid are very different games, no matter if you count any similarities in terms of how you progress in dungeons and gain new powerups. Just when push comes to shove, more people prefer what you do in Zelda. Neither of the series are difficult, at all. And regarding the feet thing - if you can't even see the bottom point of the character, ie. the feet, it makes it a nuisance to judge where you are in relation to the platform half the time. Plus it's just silly to platform heavily in a FPS. -
I'm pretty sure that Namco would release it here on the PS3, purely for the reason that JRPGs sell much, much better on the PS3. I think Microsoft must have paid a lot of money to get this RPG first as it really made little sense for them to release the game on 360 over in Japan. It really didn't sell well at all, from what I can remember. If I were in Namco's position, I'd be shoving it out on the PS3 in all areas to make up for poorer 360 sales.
-
I can't remember Eternal Sonata being well advertised, and it sells for next to nothing new. People tend not to want JRPGs on 360 anyway, so I'm sure there'll be some knocking around cheap. And surely, less advertising means there'll be more copies left in shops. :p
-
I might get this on PS3 instead of 360...but having said that, by the time it's released for PS3 over here I can see the 360 price being around a tenner. If it's a tenner on 360, I'll definitely punt for that. No amount of additional content or altered storyline is worth £30. :p

Sheikah replied to mcj metroid's topic in General Gaming Discussion
Nah, it's because the Metroid series has no way near the level of charm as Zelda games. With Zelda games you have some of the best gameplay ever, as well as not continuously having to go around killing random monsters to get to the next room. If Zelda was just all dungeons it'd be pretty dire, tbh. Plus, let's not forget, there's a great deal of platforming in MP, which is silly since it's a FPS! You can't even see your own feet. Samus is a bit of a weak character, too. Link can have his moments, while Samus is usually always hidden away in her suit. -
Eternal Sonata was released on PS3 over here after originally being for 360 only, and the Tales series games are far more popular RPGs. So it's pretty much a certainty.
