    PSP Go

XD... Have I not been saying this somewhere or other for a while. :p
  2. No I'm not. I never said it wasn't illegal; I said it wasn't piracy. Let's think about piracy for a second. Piracy directly harms the developer in the sense that people never actually pay for a legitimate copy of a single game, rather paying for a copied alternative. Either that, or they distribute copies, or copy their legitimate game and sell one of the discs. This is nothing of the sort; you've paid for your game, you don't distribute a copy, and you haven't caused the developer to suffer in any way (rather, profit from your purchase). It is illegal in the sense of sheer ridiculousness, as you already own the game yet wish to play it on a different screen; yet somewhere down the line it was decided that in order to do this you would have to again purchase the same data you already own. Again, I should mention, it was (upon a time IIRC) illegal to rip music from your own audio CDs for play on a different device, ie. an MP3 player or computer. The situation is entirely identical. May I also note: there was absolutely no instruction or linking to Custom Firmware files or installation guides, or anything illegal in this topic whatsoever. The disucssion in this topic regarding CFW amounts to discussion of something that is, on paper, considered illegal, which occurs regularly in topics throughout the forum. Example: a thread labelled "Man murders 7 people in Uganda" is created, upon which details of illegal acts are discussed. To actually deny or discredit the legal discussion of something that does exist, illegal or not, is as good as censorship. Edit: It's worth noting though that this is irrelevant, as you do not put any sort of PS1 emulator on the PSP, as the PSP has the natural ability to play PS1 games (hence, a small portion are available on the PSN store for play on the PSP or PS3). Therefore, you don't illegally obtain the BIOS file for use with said games. Perhaps a little research into how things work before bluntly slating me, yah? =D

    PSP Go

Again, I don't argue it's a good feature to have, just that Choze said it's one of the best things about the PS3, which it really isn't. Now let's clip this from becoming something bigger right here, shall we?
  4. It was a bit of a poor show, with Mcintyre being on for such a short time. He seemed to have less air time than when Jack Dee presented Live at the Apollo each time. Hopefully we'll see some better performances next time.

Yeah well, it's not that great a feature. :p

    PSP Go

But it doesn't let you view a movie while you're playing the game, does it? I could have sworn it makes you close the game.

    PSP Go

It's actually pretty useless since while you're playing a game, going to the XMB and choosing most things will ask you to close the game first. It's useful for sending messages to friends, but again; this feature has been present on the 360 from the very beginning so I'd hardly say it's one of the best things about the PS3.
  8. omg mate it isn't ment 2 be on it, its illegal and BAD. Yes it would be a great way to play your classics on the go again if Sony actually released them on the store! There's a tiny amount of actually good PS1 games out on the store, hence why CFW rocks (if you have a good PS1 game library). What the hell are you on about? Why would I be crying about something my PSP already does? Right, I've had it with you. You don't listen to anything, and assume everything. You're a complete and utter waste of time.
  9. Excuse me, you said that CFW is only for pirating (here's the quote): Ripping your original, purcahsed PS1 games is not piracy. I don't care for the term 'legal', rather whether it is piracy or not. You said this was piracy, so I will challenge that ridiculous statement. Do you recall when ripping music from CDs was also illegal? Ridiculous, and AFAIK that law was changed. Use some bloody common sense. You have the original, legitimately purachsed game, which you backup. If you sold either copy and kept the other, this would be piracy. Otherwise it's not piracy. Also, it's not illegal to rip your own PSP games and play them on your PSP. As I recall, transferring a game from one console format to the other may be inhabit the grey area, but since PSP games are being played on a PSP system there is no issue. But really, this is just common sense. Piracy involves people downloading games or purchasing/selling unauthentic cheap copies. Having bought your own game and backing it up to play it in a different way is clearly not piracy, and most importantly, you would pretty much never be prosecuted for it. What a wonderfully narrow focus, while completely ignoring on-the-go PSP players who already own the PS1 version. Loving your spelling of stupid. Because nothing gives you integrity like spelling like an infant. Again, way to assume. You have assumed that I have pirated PSP games. Do you want me to post pictures of some of the PSP games I own? So yes, to assume is ignorance. Way to go.
  10. Clearly the post of someone with very little understanding but likes to have some input anyway. Do you understand what preowned games are? You walk into a shop and pick up titles for a fiver (Gamestation at least) instead of paying say £15-20 from the PSN store. So, you have a method for far cheaper, legitimately bought games stored on a memory device without UMD-switching than the Go. Sony have created a system whereby you have to pay their full price every time you want a game. Second point; do you understand what it is to rip your PS1 games? You can put your own legally purchased PS1 games in your CD drive (all of my PS1 games are legitimate), rip them and then put them on your PSP. You can never do this for free via any other method, and there are few good games that you can download from the store anyway. Sony would gladly have people pay £5-8 (FFVII is £8) for the identical data they already have lying around on a disc on their shelf in order to play their game on a different screen. Thirdly; do you understand what it is to be able to have these features for far cheaper? For instance, purchasing a preowned PSP 1000/2000. Fourthly; you can run tons of applications that you otherwise wouldn't be able to, and even play user-created games. And, yes, if you really want to, you can even put emulators on to play games. But hey, you can just as easily put games you already own on if you're really that obsessed. So yeah; how about you get a clue before coming across as someone completely ignorant? Few games have problems, or at least significant problems, with many of the best titles working flawlessly. As you said before, PSN files are always huge. You can get trimmers for your own files that immensely reduce file sizes. The only thing I will say that you are right about is multi-disc games - often there is repeated data on each disc (gameplay mechanics, towns etc. in Final Fantasy games) whereas the PSN store FFVII seems to have merged the whole game into one, smaller package. Everything else seems bigger on the store, though.
  11. Yeah, it'll let you play games you legally own without UMDs, which isn't pirating. You can go and buy a UMD preowned from stores for peanuts (when compared with PSN store prices for games), and then back them up to memory stick. And who wouldn't want some of the awesome PS1 games? People who never had a PS1, that's who. And those people don't have souls. :p
  12. Actually, I hadn't said anything in regards to pocket-size, but there ya go. I only called out the lack of custom firmware there since you said the only difference between the two was that one didn't play UMDs. Not tyring to cause a ruckus, but I felt it needed pointing out. There's obviously interest on here for the new model, so it seemed like a good idea to tell you all about the features of the older models (including not needing UMDs) so you could make an informed decision about which you really wanted.
  13. I'm waiting for the big event that is so catastrophic and taboo that Big Brother is shut down forever. Possibly someone obtains a knife and kills everybody. =D
  14. Yeah, it does sound a lot like people who suffocate themselves to an extent for sexual purposes. Weird, that.
  15. Or have custom firmware, which is what a large proportion of PSP owners use. Of all my friends who have it, I don't know a single one who hasn't got custom firmware installed on it. The PSP would be a load of shit without it. As for the 'pocket-size' aspect - just who really is going to keep it in their pocket and play it randomly as they would a mobile phone game? In almost all situations that I can think of, if I'd plan to play my DS outside of my house it would be during some sort of journey or going to stay somewhere for a while. In which case, I'd almost definitely have a bag with me, and the handheld would go in there. I've been on enough buses during your regular day for short travel to and from places to know the number of people playing handheld games consoles on them is tiny (even though the GBA SP is pocket-size). It would also end up scratched to fuck if it was in your pocket (because we don't all have the inner jacket pockets like the businesscock in the video), meaning it would have to go in a case, increasing its overall size. What with this model coming out, you will be able to pick up a 2000 for an absolute steal, even with a 16GB (equal size to the Go) MS Pro Duo. And the additional features will more than make up for the lack of its 'pocket-size'.
  16. When you open it up to actually play it it gets bigger (and looks fucking ridiculous)...plus the Slim and Lite (2000) isn't really all that big or heavy. You really would be paying an extortionate amount extra for just a different model. You wouldn't be able to play all the great PS1 games on it, or get games for peanuts (preowned or *cough*), or enjoy the wonderful custom firmware. The advantages to an original PSP are absolutely huge, and in the long run would be enormously cheaper.
  17. Yeah DuD, I did my undergrad there, graduating in 2008. I was doing Cell Biology so over in the Stopford building most of the time. It's a great city that always has something going on.
  18. Just put custom firmware on your PSP, then you aren't carrying around UMDs (store games on the huge memory card you can buy) AND you get homebrew and countless PS1 game-playing possibilities. UMD or memory stick playing possibilities. Seriously, it's common sense. :p Edit: Around £40 from sellers for a 16GB MS Pro Duo, then you have the same capacity as the PSP go! Not to mention you can trim the crap off a lot of games if you have custom firmware to save even more space!
  19. Well I finished Uni last year and since then have been working to earn money (currently doing 2 jobs at the same time). I'm starting a masters this September/October at Manchester and that costs quite a bit...as do all the science-subject research masters, unfortunately. A degree isn't worth all that much these days, and with people being able to graduate in beauty, sports and whatnot, it seems like almost everyone has one. I do enjoy studying so I'm looking forward to doing the masters, and hopefully I'll be able to undertake a PhD afterwards.

    PSP Go

Ha, another brilliant point, that I totally overlooked. While Sony set their own prices for games on this model, people are able to pick up PSP games for peanuts preowned from game stores. It seems pretty clear to me that the Go is aimed at protecting Sony's own inteests.

    PSP Go

There's really not that a big market of people who have more money than sense, no PSP, and have interest in the PSP. The PSP was expensive when it came out, so I could pretty much imagine that particular audience having bought a PSP way back when it was touted to be a powerful handheld gaming machine like nothing seen before, meaning many would already be excluded from the new customer category. They can't, which is why I have the DS Lite. And that is a fantastic upgrade, IMO. To be honest though the shop is just for titles that aren't anything to lose sleep over.

Well, it was when you said this: When existing gamers won't be able to play the games they've already paid for on this system. Y'know, just a bit odd that you were saying that it was as advantageous for existing customers. It really isn't. :P There's really very little advantage for existing customers with a UMD library. Although, to be honest, I'm considering what happened with the DS-> DS Lite here. I do appreciate having had the opportunity to buy a DS Lite as it was a great upgrade from the clunky old phat. I wouldn't have minded if Sony had still done a major design revamp (although I question the design of this) while also keeping the option to play old games. Instead of making something so attractive only to those without a UMD library. Well, I guess what I'd like to say is that I would have liked this had I still any interest for the PSP. :p Well that's a huge assumption that this model will directly result in games that would never have been envisioned somehow becoming envisioned and becoming developed. But then there's also the question whether it will directly result in stellar titles being produced and not mediocre ones. Who knows?

    PSP Go

It's a bad move because generally speaking this UMD-less new model applies to a very small number of people who probably currently hold little interest in the PSP; thus haven't bought one up to now. Whereas a good move would be releasing a modified system that is considered applicable to all existing customers by being compatible with existing games. See: DS lite. Not sure if you're just not getting it, but it's quite simple how this shouldn't really be an option to existing customers of regular wealth (which was what I was originally responding to; part of your post). Put simply, existing PSP owners have PSP games in UMD format; if they sold their old model to buy this, they would have a model that couldn't play the games they already have. If they didn't sell their old model, but bought the new one, they would have to spend a chunk more extra dosh to buy a new model which, like you say, is capable of doing what the existing PSPs already do. Thus, we conclude from what we know so far that you'd have to have no PSP already or have more money than sense to have any reason to buy this. And considering there aren't people rushing to buy PSPs (last time I checked) this is a horrendously dick move by Sony. To be honest, I remember far back when PSP vs DS topics were rife and the PSP was strongly considered a contender with the DS. But since then, I've found so little to be enjoyable for the PSP. Most of the games feel like modified PS2 games, or games that I wish had appeared on the PS3 instead (FF7:CC). It's been dead to me and quite a few I know for a long time. Contrast this to the DS, where the games have moved with the times and some frankly outstanding titles have come out. The DS is easily the best system for games at the moment...its huge library of great games is frankly ridiculous. To me, though, my PSP has just become a paperweight. If Sony left it to die I wouldn't blame them...Microsoft aren't pushing a handheld console and they're doing just fine with the 360.

    PSP Go

Correct me if I'm wrong, but how on Earth is this model advantageous to existing PSP customers (ie. UMD disk owners) when they can't play their games? Seems that this is only for those haven't bought a PSP before but who are still likely to go and buy one - a VERY small proportion of gamers. This is a dick move for Sony.
