The team isn't the same, and in fact the very things you mention kind of make them not the same either imo. Sure, if they were allowed to work without those pressures we'd probably still see some great stuff from them - but for me Playtonic are the real successors as they ARE being allowed to work without quite such pressures or constraints - and tbh I'm glad for that because it also means I might be able to get all their content on my PS4 too! I'll freely admit I haven't seen much of their offerings though, or generally been nonplussed. I think the most I've played from them since their MS days is probably Viva Pinata(a great new IP imo), Kameo and the PD-HD upgrade on 360.

@Mr_Odwin do you have any good beginner's reading/introductory stuff to this FIRE idea? I'm interested in it at least, and wondering if it might be something I decide to pursue and it kinda sounds up my alley...

Speaking of hard drives has anybody tried the back-up/restore option that seems to exist now? I understand the old method involved clouding saves and re-downloading all your data etc and that wasn't an option before - has anyone used the new(to me) option without any troubles? (not a new beta feature, but I believe introduced with the most recent OS update possibly?)

Never really been a Mac/Apple man myself so not really able to contribute to the thread on that front but seeing as you said you're just thinking about something different have you given any thought to delving into the world of Linux? EDIT: Nvm just seen you're looking at shiny new hardware anyway.

I'm doing things, and I kinda know what I'm doing as I'm doing them, but I never know/knew that these were the things I was going to do. I like doing it like that.

Keeeeeeeeeeeeeep! I'm a hoarder at heart; don't think I've traded more than 10 things in in my life. Sometimes I've sold stuff but it's generally stuff I've specifically bought with the intention or reselling. The problem with that is there's a number of things I've bought with the intention of selling them on but then getting too lazy and just ended up keeping them :p Having said that I'm sure I've got some things out on loan that I've never got back. Fairly sure I'm guilty of similar from others too though, so ykno.

Haha fair enough - tbh I'd probably be lazy myself if the money wasn't right for it! I do like the idea of currently putting some of potential switch money into getting those missed experiences, though. Even though it's a false economy as I'll probably buy them all then just not play at all >.<

When I was in like Year 4 or something my mum took me to the bank to open my first, own, savings account where I could put christmas and birthday money etc. She still gave me some reigns on what I could spend etc(basically only one video game for each event, so I was on like 2 a year) - and whilst I used to resent it I'm very glad for it now. I grew up as the 'tight' kid and got mocked for it; but it's because I was always rather acutely aware of the value of my money. Resultantly I was about to(with help from my parents admittedly) able to buy my house at 26 despite not working for a particularly high wage. I've always been a saver rather than a spender. I don't understand the lavish spending, and I am a bit of cheap buyer where 'buy cheap, buy twice' has hit me but I think I'm up on the whole. I basically drink in wetherspoons, and that's about the extent to which I go out :p My main expenditure is feeding myself and general drinking expenses(done more often in company of others in homes). Re: savings - due to having a mortgage I don't save too much unless it's beating my mortgage rate. I'm currently saving £500 a month into a 5% account which is more than my mortgage - I'll cash it out after a year and give the money to my parents(owe them a fair bit). I do have a 'buffer' of about ten grand I've not put onto the mortgage in case I have any house emergencies like boiler, or want to do a room reno etc, but after that I essentially put everything I can into the mortgage - but I'm able to overpay without limits. I keep my buffer fund at the moment because interest rates are low and I don't mind the cost on my mortgage for that flexibility. I once attempted to day trade on penny shares once - but man, whilst the gains can big so can the losses - it was too scary to me to be losing that money that quick! I do keep saying one day I'll get like a grand together to play with - but the idea of losing that when it could go on my mortgage at the moment is too scary. I'm always worried I could get too hooked on gambling even though I do set limits! Due to the mortgage stuff I don't save in ISAs etc because I want access to my money; but I'm thinking about it soon for the money I owe my parents etc. I, arguably stupidly, don't pay a pension but that's because I'm not sure I trust either myself to live to see it or the government to give it to me before I'm 100 or something and I'd rather put as much as I can into my mortgage at the moment to cut off the excruciating amount the banks make off me in sheer interest. I'd say I've managed to put about 30-40% of my takehome into my mortgage each year so far; I'm hoping if I carry on like this I can clear all my debts on that front by 45-50. Don't know what happens if I meet someone in that time, but I'll cross that bridge later. My plan was to possible re-mortgage this house in 10 years or so to fund a cash buy of something for a rental income; I'm unsure of that given the following now though... The economy worries me a fair bit at the moment. I'm expecting a slump and decline in the housing market after we Brexit, maybe about 2-3 years after. I don't have any formal knowledge or experience to base this on, so it's really just a wild guess, but I am starting to wonder if it may be worth contemplating selling my house; living somewhere cheaper/smaller for a few years, then rebuying something the same size for cheaper if the market crashes. I took a gamble on a tracker and rates not going up when people told me to fix though - and that's paid off for me in quite a big way considering it's my first few years of a mortgage. Of course I'm absolutely heinously fucked on the above if prices just continue to go up. My house has already, accoridng to Zoopla, gone up about estimated £70k in 3 years. I'd be willing to say with patience I could easily get £80-90k more than I paid for it though. More if I did the work inside that's needed(it's very dated, hence the buffer fund I mentioned earlier). tl;dr: My advice to anyone: pay your debts before saving if you have them. I've pretty much never had debt barring this mortgage; but yeah. Always pay your debts first unless the interest is better on savings than debts(very rare). Once debt-free - save at the highest interest you can and switch if the rates get poor. Great site for finance advice etc(other than our resident Modwin here) I'd recommend is Martin Lewis's http://www.moneysavingexpert.com too.

I'm serious about beating trade-in prices for anyone thinking about this! I still wanna fill out my collection for Wii U and missing some obvious ones like Yoshi's Wooly World, Xenoblade Chronicles X, Colour Splash, Captain Toad, DKC:TF, Hyrule Warriors, Kirby and the Rainbow Curse, TP:HD(maybe), Super Luigi U, NES Remix...maybe one or two others I've forgotten too! May actually post over in the Trades in case anyone else has the same idea... Anyway re:online I still think more than £20 is too expensive for what it's offering from what we know so far, it's just not the same value as the competition from what I've seen so far. I'd be more interested if, as someone said earlier, you could do it on an equivalent month-by-month cost rather than committing to a whole 12 months at that. @Retro_Link - re emphasis on the TV <=> handheld. I think they're taking the right approach. Don't crowd every advert, have a different focus for a different market with each. They NEED to have a good advertising presence that has the variety of ads being exposed to most people though - that's a good way to do it imo. First you like it for the 1-2 switch ad, your interest is piqued - later at home you heard the Switch noise and see an advert about handheld mode at home - BAM! Even more excited. You forgot the expensive DLC characters too, especially in relative context to that online pricing Also flip the argument to apply to the first part - digital distribution costs less than retail distribution; surely that saving should go somewhere right(just as the argument online infrastructure cost should be passed onto consumer) - why aren't digital download titles cheaper than their retail counterparts as a result eh! (this one's not really a question I want a response to, btw) Since when has this service been £12-24 a year? I thought the figure I've seen people mention is £25 - that's definitely outside of the range you quote if so. I hope you're right though £12-£20 should be about the limit imo. Maybe £18 for a round monthly. To most they're offering more value with their service too, though. I don't mind the price if the service is worth it - but from what we've seen I really don't think that it is. It's good to see you understand why so many of us are worried about the potentially bad decisions Nintendo make, then. The ones that cost them money, and sales...such as high prices that don't offer enough value in consumers' eyes... Completely not on topic but did you know they're remaking Duck Tales this year...with David Tennant as Scrooge McDuck! EDIT: @Retro_Link - dat duck tales wii u joke. So absolutely on point. Lost my shit.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Wii U / Switch
Rummy replied to darkjak's topic in Nintendo Gaming
Literally the conversation of 3 posta above you :p I'd say if Amazon are sold out on their pre-orders either keep watching them in hope, go down the official lines as @Ike suggests - or otherwise consider any of your other favoured online retailers who have it in stock. I'd be wary of going for a company I'm unfamiliar with if I wanted this on launch; but I don't/haven't ordered so much for speed in the last few years. Everywhere I look seems more expensive than Amazon! What's the official download price when it's released? That same as the official store's retail price? -
Definitely. Mario Kart 64 was still great - and possibly a bit more fun in the multiplayer stakes but I wonder sometimes if that's just because it was more ubiquitous too. DKR - with its single player mode, overworld, bosses, and most of all secrets(secrets, in a racing game, wat?!) really was more than just a racer. It was almost as if they tried to take some platformer/SM64 inspiration but make a racing game from it instead. They did very well in that attempt, imo. I'd love to see another like it with a wider range of items/weapons/tracks variety/vehicle variety/mechanics etc. I've said it before and no doubt will again, but can you just imagine what the Rare of the old days could do with the power of the modern era in their hands?

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Wii U / Switch
Rummy replied to darkjak's topic in Nintendo Gaming
One of the first things I did the day after the Switch reveal conference was pre-order a copy on Amazon; knew demand for it was about to shoot up. Could be worth seeing if any folks here end up double-dipping or buying from somewhere else? -
I got you brahs(I think); Time to Switch : [countdown=03/03/2017 0:00 AM; Switch is here!!!]Countdown:[/countdown] (may work in a sig, never tried, but don't say I never encourage the hype if it does )
-
I'm quite happy with LBP myself - never really got the hype around the series at the time, even though I borrowed/played one of them for a bit. Hopefully it'll be something I get more into this time round.

I don't want to shit all over the good advice of this thread, but thinking about it there's probably only one real solution. Punch him in the face. (btw every time I see this thread I want to try and string together a hilarious sentence full of Soap related puns but I can't because I've realised I would have to quite rightly punch myself in the face afterwards) EDIT: Oooo, grab his hands and punch him in the face with THEM then tell him to stop hitting himself whilst you do it!

Like a Mario themed one with the Red/Green joycons similar to the mockup from before? I can certainly see it tempting some...possibly myself included!
-
What sort of game though? That's the thing I'm hoping for with Playtonic - it won't just be characters in similar games; but hopefully a wide variety of genres utilising/starring various characters and maybe even having cameos etc. I never played Bad Fur Day so I don't know/can't say how it compared to Banjo Kazooie/DK64 considering they were all platformers, but I'd like to hope they were still rather varied. I felt as if DK64 and Banjo-Kazooie were sufficiently different in a number of their mechanics and design aspects.

You should probably ask @Pestneb - I only dare wonder how many hours he's clocked up on this by now! Personally I ended up with at least 100 hours playtime out of the original. I recall one day when I think Moray Towers came out, me @Cube and @Goron_3 were on for possibly half the day in and out lol - don't think any of us attended to the plans we actually had for the day! That was cool, though we were skyping at the same time which helped. You have to consider though - that's 100 hours for me despite some noticeable flaws in the game. i.e not being able to change loadouts without leaving lobbies, then waiting to get back into games(especially if trying to rejoin friends) and the 'rotation' of modes and limits of maps to 4 hourly intervals, the kick at the changeover time, balance for uneven teams etc. The slow trickle of content, whilst initially receiving mixed reactions, eventually wasn't too bad for me personally. It added some sort of new dimensions and freshness to the game when new weapons came out and the meta slowly changed. One of the things I loved about Splatoon actually was just seeing how the meta of it slowly changed over time! I'm a bit of a nerd for stuff like that though. Splatwoon is probably one of the things that would make me really want to get a Switch when I think about it atm - as long as the weaknesses have been addressed. Every time I see this argument made I ask the same question - why the need though? Why not just use the WiFi hotspot feature that basically every common smart device has in it? It's already possible anywhere WITHOUT an app in that context. I'm personally hoping for far more from an app than something that we can basically already do without it. I've thought the same since the Wii U and can't fathom it really. It was really enjoyable when we did manage to Skype/VC whilst Splatooning, but it could sometimes be a bit of a faff getting it together; especially when there was quite a few of us!
-
Ha! Another thought we have in common! I'm really excited for this in case it re-captures the ol' Rare magic and pushed Playtonic into making a whole range of games of varying genres but set within the similar universe. To think that the seeds of Banjo and Conker were essentially just in DKR and they opted to expand them out is quite interesting. Speaking of which I don't know if I've made it up but weren't they supposedly thinking about games from the other characters too?
-
Tbh I'd say that if you're going to be happy with it at £280-300 at Christmas then I absolutely agree you might as well jump in now for the joy of having it at launch, and playing BoTW on Switch, for what's gonna be like an extra fiver a month if that. It's basically just sort of renting a Switch for that price if you're going to get it anyway - and that's a price I think anyone would jump at! The only thing is how long you might end up waiting for stock allocation to catch up to you though - did they give you any sort of impression on when it might be if not on launch? Don't know if @Clownferret might be useful too given he said he only just did his GAME pre-order pretty much? Although I dunno if being in NI would make any sort of difference to stock availability.

General point not meaning to single anyone in particular out: Can we please try and stop comments like this please. It's the sort of reason the 'Other' threads end up happening - someone makes a point not in favour of the console and they're 'moaning'. The 5 year consideration point is as legitimate as one about a higher price difference for a game. If one is 'moaning' then so is the other. It believe it's a rude and dismissive comment to make and I'm rather convinced it's the sort of comment that contributes to the tensions on here. If your consider the quoted text by itself - it actually contributes nothing at all to the thread. There's no reference to Switch' date=' no context at all related to it. I don't want to have to start censoring everything I feel falls into that category. By all means feel free to a public right to reply to this - [b']but do it on my wall.[/b] I am making this point but will NOT let it derail the thread, and I will delete further responses to this if they have no or limited on-topic content in them. If anyone wishes to reply, do so on my wall (or via PM if you prefer, but I'm not aiming to stifle the discussion if needed, just to not have it derail the thread).

You make me wonder sometimes as to whether you actually read the thread before posting :p Deffo agree, and it's most certainly better than Rufus Hound's bloody bread and butter shit they put out there. Still, have to wonder if it's really going to do much or appeal to people to really get uptake. Still feels a bit of a Wii crowd chaser and whilst it all looks so fun and games in the video will anyone from back then really drop dime on this when they're dropping hundreds on smartphones etc instead? The economic climate is still rough for a number of people, and I'd daresay especially younger adults(personally seen much more unemployment in my social circles in the last 5 years than beforehand). Stuff like THIS is much more appealing to me! Ofc I realise I'm probably not the target audience for the video liger and Serebii posted but you do have to consider that I'm a consumer that they've already got a foot in the door with rather than something fresh JUST looking at an impulse new product. I think they should attack from both sides and market to both - there's many a lapse Ninty fan(espesh after WiiU) that they could potentially turn to sales where the thing's already got a mental presence for them. Hahaha, ok that's quite embarrassing. But it does highlight something I did think in watching the video - why not give your actors the actual real thing as a prop when filming? It's easy to see the acting side(for me) and I think if they asked them to act AND gave them the actual thing to play with in doing it, you'd get a much better and genuine feeling video. I realise it might carry a bit more work/cost and they probably don't want too many people to see it blah blah blah - but I won't be the only one getting that slightly fake vibe of the advert - and that won't necessarily sell to other such folks; maybe even do the opposite. EDIT: They didn't waste much time, vid's been pulled already.
-
why hello there mr gibbs ! Though out of interest why selling the 3DS, do you have another or thinking Switch will simply replace it?
-
Initially yeah, but if you think about how poorly the WiiU's done I can imagine with its supply going even further through the floor it might actually end up appreciating within a year or two. What happens is some silly sucker with some money decides they fancy buying/playing a WiiU? How easily/at what price will they be able to find one?
