Gaming Podcasts: A Thread about Listening to Others

How though? You can have two women with rather similar physical builds but different breast sizes. That isn't so common in men though, is it? -
(originally I was only going to post that one but then I saw an FMA one)

Seeing that pic of all the partner-character themed ones made me think how cool would it be if those existed and when you bought/pre-ordered your console you didn't actually get a standard joy-con set with it but instead you got to choose which ones you had? Obvs it'd take a bit of work from Nintendo and possible cost in guaging stock/demand and working with retailers - but the idea of avoiding paying £70 for another set but getting the ones you want with the console...damn. Missed trick imo.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Wii U / Switch
Rummy replied to darkjak's topic in Nintendo Gaming
Random how? Nothing major is procedurally generated in this, is it? Like you wouldn't have a different experience to me or yourself even if we took the exact same route each time, would we? Though a Zelda with that level of variety.... 4.5 weeks ! Need to go get my Wii U soooon! -
Ha! I guess I kinda see it, but I'm from that kinda asian background where the plastic would stay on your new chairs for years :p The weird thing is I don't think I'm terribly clumsy - but sometimes I do have epic fumbles or do really stupid stuff. Having said that at the same time I also sometimes have like weirdly epic reflex catches to things when they're falling - it's just usually shit stuff that ain't worth no money and all my valuable shit hits the deck instead!
-
Ahhh yeah could well be that - I believe the earpiece speaker as it were on this is doubled-up into the loudspeaker too so that does kinda make sense it'd have the big magnet for that near it -like a fool, I only considered it from the perspective of looking at it from the back. Ahhh! A man after my own heart! That's why I didn't get any super fancy/expensive phone. I probably use mine more than yourself(do do a lot of internet browsing) but I'm a 1GB a month man and I don't think I've broken that to date after very many years! Calls, texts, whatsapp/messenger - and just general small things. Tbh I think the most usage outside of that for my phone is browsing and then sending stuff to my Chromecast!

I wasn't feeling keen to chance my hands on a SIM card with scissors, not to mention it being my main number in case I mashed it/my new phone up! Luckily the men of my family tend to have a habit of having all sorts of randomly useful crap and tools no sensible person generally tends to own - and ofc my brother naturally had a micro sim cutter when I asked last night lol. Whipped round there and grabbed it, cut a test SIM(which I'll put in as SIM2 later, is a super old number) and then cut my main and thankfully it worked! Need to get me some decent adapters in case I ever need to step back up again though. Phone's up and running and I'm liking it a lot so far! The size is a bit crazy and holding an older phone now seems quite weird due to the size difference. I think it's just nice having a phone that isn't half-riddled with various problems and that's actually quite fast and slick etc. After a few tries/removals I managed to somehow get Whatsapp to NOT restore from my google drive and from the old phone's microsd card - so I've got messages up to about 2/3 weeks ago which is what I wanted most and they weren't in my google drive. Hadn't realised that this version of android incorporates individual app permissions so I'm very happy to see that as a built in android feature now. My old phone had it as it was a Cyanogen cutom ROM i put on, and it's something I quite appreciate when I see apps asking for all sorts of crazy permissions. Sadly less detailed from what I've seen so far, but still better than not being there at all. My old phone had more than 2 main screens and I had a lot of crap/clutter that I liked having - but I'll get used to that. Just realised you can add more screens! The lack of actually sort of hard buttons at the bottom but being on the screen is a bit strange but I'm sure I'll adjust to that too and if it saved me a bit of money or allowed them to pack a bit more into the phone then I don't mind at all. EDIT: erm....what's with something magnetic in the back near the camera? Just found a pin stuck to my phone and was confused! Do you have any sort of case or screen protector for yours @bob? I know you've got the plus model so I assume it might not be quite the same size etc, but I feel like I really want some sort of cover/protection on this thing. Worried I'm gonna break it already somehow. Not average as in you use it more than most people, or less so? Just curious!

Ah, for that one I was meaning two physical sources of sound - as in if voice chat's running through the phone but system/game sounds are running through the Switch it might be physically/mentally confusing directly in two seperate ears. Having said that I guess it isn't all that different to being on the phone whilst doing something/playing a game - I've managed to take a call and carry on playing PS4 at the same time with the voice chat in my ear, phone in the other, and TV coming out too. If I can find me a set of earbuds I might actually try it out at some point! EDIT: Was meant to merge this next bit in last night but my wifi went wild so I fell asleep instead :p Ahh yeah I know how you mean and what @Jimbob's saying. I got party/chat invites on my phone but I don't know which app it was through and obvs can't check with it being broken now :p If there's a communities app like Jimbob says that takes care of the same things I was saying on the PS4 side that's pretty fair enough. Possibly even more the reason for Nintendo to try and incorporate similar or superior functionality in on their system too.

AAAAAAAAARGH! Imagine my surprise at the fact it has TWO sim card slots! I didn't know it had two, and I was pleasantly surprised! Is it actually dual-SIM or does it just let you toggle one or the other? However imagine my greater surprised(and aforementioned argh) upon realising I need a fucking micro SIM for this prick. Super unimpressed right now.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Wii U / Switch
Rummy replied to darkjak's topic in Nintendo Gaming
Exciting though! I always like non-linearity and choice in games, and I'm really hoping we're going to get to see lots of that in this game. ALBW was a nice project in the right direction, but flawed in certain ways - but I'm hopeful for this building off of things they might have considered in that. -
I didn't back it but I'll be getting the PS4 version most likely(physical if I can). Also agree that the above phrasing is still a bit flakey! 'plans for a Nintendo Switch version' does not mean there WILL be one, does it? Regardless of the Nintendo side of things though I am incredibly excited for what this might bring. Not this game so much per se, but if this takes of and Playtonic get a real good kickstart out of it it may be the beginning of a whole fantastic universe for us to experience, with all the qualities of their greats from our childhood with the added benefit of modern possibilities!! I really hope Playtonic become something great in the industry!

Deffo agree they're most missed for me on racing games. I bought NFS:MW for my WiiU and whilst I did enjoy it for rather a while I definitely did get annoyed at the lack of analogue triggers a number of times(tho to its credit it was one of the few games that actually gave voice chat straight off the gamepad). Thinking back to when I played NFSU2 or Burnout on Xbox, and Paradise on 360 - it definitely makes a difference to me. When I think about it and the previous discussion it's actually quite strange to think about accelerating a car without an analogue input - can you imagine that in a proper car?! It'd be so silly lol.

I don't believe it was ever an option admittedly, though I'd say the variance there is much smaller compared to that of lady breasts :p -
I has it! Bigger than I realised/expected! Not turned it on yet(just charging etc) and thinking about a few things. Firstly - does anyone know if there's a way to backup Whatsapp without an SD card? The phone I'm temping on atm doesn't see SD cards, so whatsapp says to insert one when I try to backup. Even tho it should also back up to google drive it seems to be refusing to do this without an sd card backup first. I might see if the old phone has the backup from when it broke and use that, though I did wanna have my recent convos too. My old phone it turned out wasn't backing up the google drive for a long time neither though. Secondly! Accessories! Anyone got any recommendations for a decent but cheap case/cover for the phone? Don't mind if it's only going to last a year being cheap(gives me an excuse to refresh the look). That's actually about it, come to think of it. Case/screen protectors are my next priority - dunno why I was so stupid to not have dealt with that in the interim -.- EDIT: Tell a lie - do have a thirdly. Anyone rooted a G4(regular, not play or plus) and did it all go ok? I imagine I'll eventually want to root it, so was just thinking that there's no time like the present! @Sheikah you ever done it? You weren't wrong brah...HELLO MOTOBRO(s).

Jeez c'mon dazzy - if you want to weigh in on the clearly very off-topic politics debate, at least throw something on topic in with it! I won't go into it - but I do believe Grazza's comments may have been over-interpreted slightly. I mean, I voted remain but still think we should respect the outcome in the same as Grazza says. I don't think that's be all and end all, and I also don't think anyone should be generalising a person as belonging to a group of people for expressing a single view or two. Whilst that's been heavily applicable to Brexit etc - it's something I also notice increasingly on the forums sometimes! Coming back to the point - I echo both H-o-T and his agreement with Grazza's sentiments. Whilst I can understand censorship of skimpy outfits etc - I did find the boob slider removal in the character creation option a bit of a weird one. I can see and understand how or why it came about, but I think it's a bit short sighted and preposterous. It seems to be for, ironically given the above, a oversimplified generalisation of everyone using it for insidious/nefarious/pervy purposes. People have different boob sizes! If you're creating a character why not be able to adjust your figure?? I do think that in certain cases, the options should be given. -
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Wii U / Switch
Rummy replied to darkjak's topic in Nintendo Gaming
I doubt I'd do it unless it's easy to find, but I do think it would be quite interesting to see. Reminds me of stuff in like Xenoblade where you'd come across it early on and it's well out of your depth - jump forward 20 hours or so and you're wrecking said beasts in no time! What happens if you defeat this 'final' boss anyhow? Is it actually a 'final' boss or just the hardest one? -
Is it fair though? I can't deny I do occasionally use handsfree via the phone's inbuilt speaker/HF mode - I don't use a headset and even when I do use it it's really quite rare/occasional and usually for quite a short period. I don't particularly find it 'comfortable' in a sense either way, but I could well be in a minority there. The complication to consider though if that you also have system audio to deal with - I'm not sure how having two differing sources of sound is going to feel when trying to use the device - nor how good non-headset handsfree will be if you're in a non-quiet environment. All fair points and enlightening me to different situations! I don't tend to carry earphones/headphones with me much anymore because most of the time I'm listening to music etc will be on a commute which tends to be by car anyway. I used to listen to music etc when getting buses places but I don't really keep up with music much now - I usually just end up web browsing on my phone instead! Fair, but there isn't so much a 'cost' with the TV such as battery life. Not the power per se, but the fact your sacrificing something which is usually limited to you at the time of use - ofc if it's something that ISN'T limited to you then it's no problem. I'd also argue TVs are a bit more of a 'stable' product - not bought as often or as problematic as phones can be. With the battery life stuff though I do think Nintendo should be considering powerbank partnership/promos considering the Switch is USB-C and smart devices are pretty much all usb chargeable. Hadn't considered this at all! In fact I almost forgot about some of the great mic usage the DS put out there. Tournaments etc on the App would be great. As I said I know the PS4 has the features similar atm; but tbh when I turn on my console at home I'm sitting down to play a game and not to browse or care too much about stuff like that. I don't feel as fussed about playing in tournamenty stuff on PS4 either - whereas stuff like MK or Splatoon I'd definitely be a bit more on board with. I think having the app on the phone and giving notifications of stuff like that and being able to sign up from it etc would be cool. So I might be out and about in the day and find out about a MK tournament(let's say even the N-E League if users could do their own) that evening - realise I'm free and make a plan to enter/join. Now if that's a notification I'd only get on my console when I turn it on(ala my PS4 setup atm) then I won't actually KNOW about it unless I turn that console on before the thing starts. Phone app+notifications would definitely be an improvement on that. Again - not sure if PS4 can do this via its apps so apologies if I've made out it can't when it can(I don't have that setup tho).

I think it's an idea about the dissonance between the two. I do recall feeling a bit like it in Smash(as Ashley mentioned) when I originally tried using Wiimote+nunchuk. I could still play, but it's definitely my weakest input method for the game looking back. Don't forget as well, if you're holding one solid thing like a pad - you have more luxury to let off pressure with one hand as the other will still support it. Having two pads across two hands doesn't give you this luxury, especially if you end up needing to do a lot with each. I can imagine it being both either difficult and/or stressful for the hands. Were there any Wii games that ever used a Wiimote per hand? Like...two wiimotes, one in each hand?

I am hoping the app does more than just the basic matchmaking/voice chatting stuff. I wonder if they might even incorporate its own little Switchverse into it? Miiverse was a pretty cool idea - a Switchverse of sorts through the app would be pretty cool! Ofc if they're still trying to avoid randoms voice chatting/becoming friends/pervs etc then that might make that trickier if it allowed any way to find/communicate with people(thinking back to Letterbox or whatever it was getting shut down). I do wish the app is an additional option sort of thing rather than an instead of sort of thing though - just an extension of what the system itself can do rather than instead of. Deffo agree on the Wi-Fi hotspots thing(I know I already said it) - I remember thinking it was quite a cool/exciting idea when they did it with the DS - but then again WiFi wasn't quite as common back then. Demand for WiFi hotspots probably exist less these days because so many people just have mobile data options etc already! Re: headsets for online gaming; atm I voice chat only through PS4 and use the standard headset/earpiece that comes with that. For 360 I used to use the official 360 headset backed up by a cheap unofficial one(so like an oldschool furry earphone+plastic overhead strut and stickey round mic if that descriptions makes any sense :p). I did get a dirty cheap bluetooth set to try at some point both with my PC and my PS3 - sound quality on it was super wank and I didn't play online enough on those systems to care. Possibly the fact it was harder to do made me less inclined(PS4+360 could plug into the pad, PS3 and PC were wireless/too far away).

Hopefully it's helped get my point over regardless though. Tbh we've both been around the forum long enough I didn't realise you'd ever actually genuinely believe I'd hold that view, plus I thought the smiley solidified it. Add to that discussions recently over those who criticise the system yet still want to buy it or even Day1 it, which I've certainly been present in and argued for the non black&white nature of it. I'd considered the data aspect before - but I've been more worried about other aspects so hadn't brought it up. Seeing as you have though! - does anyone know how much data say an online match of Splatwoon would likely use? It's not something I can imagine I'd be doing tons, but I only have 1GB data a month and wouldn't want Switch eating too much of that! I can accept the fee from Nintendo if it's sufficiently low to account for aspects like that though. If you're using your own data and own device etc without being able to do it through the system I see the absolute annual upper limit for their paid service cost to be around £20, and that's possibly still being a bit generous. I'm also still hoping they might do something like the WiFi teamups they did back in the day with the DS(and 3DS iirc?) - that'd make quite a big difference to the portable gaming aspect imo.
-
Fair arguments but why does a cellphone eliminate the bulky headset? Or are you suggesting the phone would be used without a headset at all? We know now the Switch has a 3.5mm in with microphone support now I believe. Also does everyone have headphones/a headset for their phone?! The only headset I have is my PS4 one! I do think Switch should have bundled a nice cheap one like that in with it for users without - because again it's an extra expense to that user. I think it's a poor design choice relying on a user's 3rd party device that they'll be wholly responsible for in addressing your own potential issues with battery life - but that will likely be a point of agreeing to disagree as I guess it comes down to an opinion. I must admit I may be mixing up my understanding of your points here - as I'm not sure what's doing what. Are you chatting through the phone's in built mic or a headset? Are you listening through the phone's inbuilt speaker, or a headset, or earphones? Whenever I've said headset in this post I refer to something that has a microphone+earpiece. Still - I am certainly intrigued/excited by the prospect of the 3.5mm in with microphone support. What would it be there for? If they get the console handling the voice chat aspects that will be a lot less messy for me I think. For those more in the know about apps and smartdevices etc - would it be possible for them to have the smartphone app essentially create a local wifi spot for the Switch; skipping the faff of actually doing so out for the user? I did just consider one aspect of an app over the manual wifi hotspot is streamlining that for the user.
-
Can I just explicitly point out once more that that is not a view I hold nor something I actually believe in? I was using the paragraph to illustrate that I feel it is of no use to generalise regardless of what side it comes from. That includes suggesting that people dismiss features of the system simply because it's Nintendo and they are down on Nintendo. It also includes suggesting that people blindly buy the system because it's Nintendo and they are up on Nintendo. I, Rummy, do NOT believe everyone buying a Switch is doing so because they blindly love Nintendo. I am not 'down' on Nintendo. I bought a WiiU, and I still have it, and whilst I don't intend to get a Switch on launch - I'm certainly still thinking about it for when I have more details to answer the questions/concerns I have. I do want to discuss the system and the concerns I have over the potentials of the app, voice chat, and the fact it relies on a second device. Doesn't mean I hate the whole thing, just that I have a number of potential concerns/issues that I can't see answers to. Having said that - there's also possibly some great upsides that I can't see answers to either - and that's why discussions and examples are needed! Tbh I didn't consider about photo/video sharing from the app with ease until dazzy said it - that's certainly something that, afaik, would be something pretty darn positive that the others don't offer.
-
Ah! some counter points and qualifications at last! It has been interesting seeing the stuff about the headphone jack taking mics(as I said a page back I think) - I'm hoping it gives potential that Nintendo might utilise the app for matchmaking or initiating voice chat; but then letting it be done through the console(after all if the phone app does matchmaking, then it surely has to have some tie in to the console). I take the point on the pics/videos front too. I take a lot of vids and occasional pics with my PS4 but a lot of them languish in my capture gallery. Ease of getting photos uploaded somewhere I want isn't great - and I'm not too keen having my PS4 stuff splashed publicly all over my facebook or in a specific facebook album. It's not so bad for video clips as it's an easy youtube upload(not that I ever did many of those anyway) but Facebook and picture sharing isn't typically that simple; the interfacing of the PS4 to FB imo isn't that great for it at all. Having the ease of access to the photos/videos on a phone to then work with would be really useful - especially as a lot of people's content discovery/sharing is done via their phones already. I like the idea of using it for setting up a game session on a calendar level too. I've enjoyed the PS Message's app as it's allowed me to get in touch with PS4 friends/keep up with messages even when out and away from my PS4, but afaik I don't think you can use that to tap into organising a later session or calendars etc. I'm aware the PS4 does have events and whatnot, but it's not something I've touched so much so do correct me if I'm wrong. I could see myself using the same features I use on PS4 much more with a Switch though, I think.
-
Another thing I thought about with the phone app - what about levels of support? What about different software versions? My two old(broken but limited functionality) phones I believe are JellyBean(custom ROM flashed to upgrade from KitKat) and KitKat(stock HTC I think). Pokemon Go was not officially supported on my android phone that recently broke(can't recall android version or check) and so I had to try it via APK downloads. Ofc the former are two phones that I don't actively use as my main device - but what about people who have kept their device for a number of years simply because it's functioning? The only reason I've changed any of these phones is because they weren't working so well anymore; many out there might be fine with what they have though. What if the app won't support KitKat when it comes out? Or even JellyBean(likely they would though)? What if things move and change with the app over time that they update it in such a way it stops working with certain or older versions of Android? What about people with rather specific issues? I want to hope none of that would happen - but none of us can truly say yet, can we? Nor can we fully expect Nintendo to account for every device out there. If it was at a system level however, then I'd feel much more reassured.
-
@dazzybee no, *I* wasn't using it seriously :p @King_V - what agenda? I wrote that paragraph to flip the generalisation of those dismissing aspects of the console simply because it's Nintendo to suggest the same from the other point of view - to try and illustrate that that approach has no merit regardless of what side it comes from @Happenstance - literally all I'm trying to do is discuss the voice chat app and its limitations. So far the argument I've had put to me that I can fathom is '...but it COULD be good' which really isn't much of an argument nor discussion. The best follow up was a generalised 'portable online gaming'(which I feel is a rather broad category) and 'Switch battery life. This is rather frustrating as whilst I'm trying to discuss the thing - nobody seems to have any sort of response to my points! Are they ridiculous or unreasonable scenarios that I'm proposing, here? Maybe next time I should walk into the thread, say 'Switch is terrible/amazing' without giving any sort of support to my argument, and expect it to be accepted by all as gospel. Like seriously - I don't understand why this thread is here if we aren't going to actually discuss the Switch.
