Why is every Sonic game built around a novelty these days? Can't they see their approach is broken? Needless to say looking forward to Mania much more than this.

Ok, I hope this is the last we'll need to talk about this, but I don't want to let this go. I'm really against this derailing, but feel a bit personally targeted here. For future reference, if you want me to argue in long prose with quotes and links, just insult my intelligence by likening me to the most embarrassing idiots on the internet and/or current politically challenged morons and shrug it off as a joke after. At the time, Ronnie believed (albeit erroneously) that this game was made by Nintendo, without input from Monolith. Yep, he was wrong, and anything they did deserves credit. But his original point was: All he was trying to say that this is an amazing open world game, and that other totally different developers could learn a lot from what they've done. Whether or not he was right about the makeup of the team involved in this, was not the original point. And, I believe his point still stands, once corrected, that this was the team's first open world game (to a degree), that they have done an excellent job on the mechanic, and that other games could take away a lot from this. But rather than people say "yep, you're right, they did a great job" (or even "actually, I think x does a much better job"), it was picked apart, had devolved into "actually, I think you'll find they got help from Monolith Soft, who have made open world games before, so it's not their first open world game, so you are wrong". All totally true, all not something that deserves be dismissed, but all not really what the post was about, because it was said on the basis of a misunderstanding.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Wii U / Switch
Shorty replied to darkjak's topic in Nintendo Gaming
I absolutely adore the weapon breaking system. I liken it to Halo where you would grab a needler off an enemy's body, use it til it was out of ammo, and then throw it away and grab something else. I have never once strayed from a fight (since becoming strong enough to survive) because I can finish off an enemy with my best weapon and then take theirs. Also there are weapons to be found with high durability, or that counter an enemy in a single blow, and thus don't go down too fast. Only thing is, I would've liked a way to repair a weapon you got really attached to. But instead, I find myself extra happy to see an opportunity to get another of those. -
Listing things as facts irrespective of the bigger picture doesn't make for a good discussion... you haven't countered any points in my post, or even given evidence that you read any of my post at all. I specifically said that Ronnie was mistaken in claiming that Monolith was not first party and that he should've stated "this team" originally rather than Nintendo. I'm reminded of this joke:
-
I'm going to have to sell some games so I can buy this sooner than I would've otherwise
-
Okay wow, sidestepping being basically accused of being a far right Donald Trump supporter, since you mentioned facts.... The Monolith team, a team owned by Nintendo but with its own developers, management, directors etc, entirely built XC and XCX but on Zelda provided an undisclosed quantity of support to an otherwise completely separate team of hundreds, described by director Aonuma merely as: (emphasis mine) On the other hand, when describing why they didn't use help on level design in Skyward Sword (and highlighting the fact that it's not considered the same team internally): (emphasis mine) Source: Interview from Gamekult http://www.gamekult.com/actu/eiji-aonuma-un-zelda-ou-lon-prend-plaisir-a-se-perdre-A172637.html Translated by Nintendo Everything http://nintendoeverything.com/aonuma-on-zelda-breath-of-the-wild-full-gamekult-interview-translation/ Whilst they may have assisted, this doesn't make it a Monolith Soft game, it's still the first Open World game built by this team, following their own direction. They were brought on board to provide assistance in layout and physical creation of the world, however, it will have fallen under the BotW team's direction. They will have said "thanks but no" to anything that did not fit their vision of Hyrule, of the world they wanted their game to take place in. Nothing that the people from Monolith Soft will have provided will have shaped the ultimate experience that makes this game what it is in a way that overrides the original "Zelda" vision. In my opinion, this leaves us with a creation which is completely the product of this, individual team of game developers, and thus, a final entity which can be considered this individual team's first entry into this department. To break down the detail of the level of assistance for further discussion, This is a list of game designers from Breath of the Wild Credits And this is a list of Landscape Modelers Bolded are names that also appear on the credits for XC and/or XCX. So at most (not counting for people that may have actually changed teams or just have the same names) we're look at a 12/77 involvement in these departments.

Can we get back to discussing Zelda please Ronnie made a mistake and perhaps should've just said "this team's first shot...", that point still merits discussion, even if there was a technical inaccuracy, there's no need to spend a page batting it back and forth. On topic: I can't believe how long I've been playing and I've still only done two of the main objectives. There's so much to do and discover. Despite that I've found a few flaws and bits lacking, enough to dock this to a 9/10 rather than 10/10 experience, but nothing that stops it being a wonderful game and the best Zelda in years. It's found me thinking longingly already about the things they could do with a sequel, now that they've established a world and method that works. BotW could really make for an amazing OoT->MM style second outing.

Yeah bit embarrassing to look back at how badly the Wii U did, but not sure I'd class it as hilarious - I'd see it is as a sign of success, of learning from your mistakes and doing it all better.

Been loving Snipperclips. Can anyone throw any other ideas from this genre at me? Something where you really have to work together to figure something out. Ideally on PS4 or Switch, but open to suggestions on (almost) any other system to be fair. It doesn't even have to be something where you both take control, maybe something like the Witness where you could just work together?

Since the forum is built on tables I'd be worried that any parsed tags would potentially break the layout, but I'll look into any pre-existing solutions.

Do you guys - who never have trouble turning it on with the PC - ever turn it completely off, or only put it to sleep? How about letting the console battery die?
-
Just doesn't do anything. Console flashes like it's not paired and I have to get up and press a button on the console. Sometimes it works but usually not any time after the console is re-docked. Maybe specifically after it's docked because the battery died.
-
Does anyone else have issues waking the console up with the pro controller, after using it in tablet mode then docking it

PS+ games... I add them all because... you never know. Maybe in 40 years PSN will still be going and your grandson will say "hey do you have this game for my video game history studies, apparently it's really rare". Maybe one day you're hankering for a puzzle and you realise that you own one of the highest rated puzzle games of 2015 but you never even noticed. May your PS4 goes to a kids charity when you die and the more games attributed to the account the more children it makes happy. Maybe one day there's another PT and your console is worth £xxxx if it has that rare game on. In your web browser you literally just tick a box next to all of them and add to basket, takes under five seconds.

I'm picking this up at the weekend as a game to play when I take the Switch away with my gf We played the demo and had a right laugh, looking forward to it and the price is totally reasonable too.

For some reason I'm worried, I think this'll be the one game out of the big list of hugely awesome recent/upcoming games that'll let me down. Hope to be proven wrong though!

I've said it a few times already but I just want to memorialise how insane this month is. Actually I need to slightly stretch the definition of month because I'm going from Mar 3 - Apr 11 A new Nintendo console and Zelda: Breath of the Wild Nobody knew for sure if Zelda would be as good as it looked, but for me it's knocked it out of the park 110%. Horizon: Zero Dawn When this was announced, I thought it had a lot of promise but would ultimately let us down. Right up until launch many were skeptical that it would be empty and repetitive. And then it turned out to be deep and clever and gorgeous and get loads of high scores. Mass Effect: Andromeda (March 23) Mass Effect is definitely in my top five game series of all time. Again I'm skeptical of whether it'll be good, but hopefully it follows the trend of the rest of the games on this list! Nier Automata I played the demo for this, and while it was enjoyable, I figured it would ultimately be bland and repetitive. A fun action game no doubt, but short and simple. And here it is, scoring higher on average than Horizon. Did anyone expect this?? Persona 5 (April 4) If pushed I might say that Zelda, Mass Effect and Persona make up my top three. And by many accounts, this is the best Persona game to date. You'd figure they'd start to drop the ball eventually, release a crappy entry, and yet it seems we're set to dethrone even the amazing Persona 4. Yooka Laylee (April 11) The Rare team that brought us BK is back and hoping to recapture that original magic. Crowdfunded this so it's one of the few on the list I'll be getting with my bank account still struggling after that Switch purchase! Honorable mentions that fall outside the month window Nioh Resident Evil 7 Night in the Woods Yakuza 0 There are so many games that there's no way I can pick them all up any time soon. I have to pick and choose the ones I really want and the rest will have to wait! This little period is so tightly packed that I genuinely think it will confuse sales figures for a little while. I'm really looking forward to Horizon, Nier and Nioh but all three will definitely wait. Mass Effect is a maybe with only Persona 5 currently pre-ordered. But I can't wait to play them all! How will the rest of the year even compare??

I couldn't tell what it was meant to be so I took my best guess.

I don't think I can read or watch One Piece without waiting a long time to build up several chapters/episodes. -
The new anime and manga thread! [Use Spoiler Tags!]

Is that the anime @drahkon? At its current place or just where you're up to? It's definitely one of the most drawn out animes. I hope one day the trend of putting an episode on every week is abandoned in favour of downtime while the manga makes progress. -
You've already exceeded the quota of allowed name changes anyway

Secret knowledge: There was another James but he was banned years ago and only had 170 posts so now he's called James_banned.

I think it's a no-brainer. I don't have time to do it anymore, but it's great for lots of things like replayability, or creating competition amongst friends in single player games. The gamerscore on Xbox was great, it was like a scoreboard for your whole game library.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Wii U / Switch
Shorty replied to darkjak's topic in Nintendo Gaming
I can read all your criticisms and I don't even disagree with you. But... I'm so glad I don't really agree with you, either. For me, Zelda captures something in its essence, its art, atmosphere, music, sounds, that transcends annoyances about how easy one part is or how little flora there is and such. It sees other, more technically capable, richer worlds and says "so what? This is Hyrule". I know that it's visually weaker than some, and that puzzles are simpler or sillier than those in similar games but... it doesn't matter. I sit down and I just get lost in this game, for hours. I feel like I'm really there. I'm well aware of how corny this sounds. But Zelda is probably the reason I'm here, and I haven't felt like this about a Zelda game since Wind Waker. The list of games that can capture this feeling is very short, and I'm just so happy it's back.
