Here's a load of information that I've compiled into one source about the Virtual Console, the Classic Controller and everything associated with it.

VIRTUAL CONSOLE NEWS

16.01.07

ShadowMan for the N64 is on the radar for Virtual Console.

08.01.07

R-Type for the Virtual Console (originally a TurboGrafx-16 game) appears as 800 Points in the Virtual Console instead of the usual 600 for TurboGrafx games. The reason for this is that it contains all eight levels - unlike the Japanese release which only included the first four levels as per the original HuCard.

25.12.06

Nintendo offer Super Mario Bros. and several other games as a 'Christmas present' to Wii owners

01.12.06

A video from the US Wii launch reveals in an interview with Reggie that GameBoy games on the Virtual Console are possible, and the majority of Japan's launch games are coming to the US

29.11.06

Reggie makes it clear that Nintendo are looking into all of the rights issues of getting GoldenEye from the Nintendo 64 onto the Virtual Console.

17.11.06

IGN claim that Banjo Kazooie may be coming to the Virtual Console despite Rare not making games for it.

10.11.06

Nintendo 64 titles on the Virtual Console are confirmed to not use rumble.

03.11.06

An NGamer interview with System 3 reveals that Impossible Mission and Leaderboard for the VC will be out in January (no regions are specified). California Games will include Summer Games I and II and will be online enabled and compatible with the Wii Remote. All games will include enhanced and original versions. A one-table demo will be available to download through the Wii Shop Channel of Gottlieb Pinball Classics.

23.10.06

IGN announce their plans to make a Virtual Console game playable with the utilisation of four Wiimotes

INFORMATION ABOUT THE VIRTUAL CONSOLE

The Virtual Console is a download service for the Wii that allows you to download new games and retro games from a back-catalogue of Nintendo consoles and formerly competing consoles. The games, once downloaded for a fee, will be playable via an SD card in the Wii or saved onto the Wii's internal 512MB flash memory, playable through the Wii Channels. If the memory ever fills up, a player can delete a game and re-download it at a later date for no added fee. Virtual Console games saved to SD cards cannot be played on another Wii other than the one it was downloaded to. If a console breaks, Nintendo will offer support on recovering the games.

Atlus, Namco Bandai, Banpresto, Capcom, Chunsoft, D4 Enterprise, Enterbrain, HAL Laboratory, Irem, Jaleco, KEMCO, Koei, Konami, NCS Masaya, Netfarm, Paon, Rocket Company, Square Enix, Sunsoft, Taito, Takara TOMY and Tecmo have pledged their support to the Virtual Console, joining Hudson Soft (who are planning to bring 100 titles to the Virtual Console) and Sega. Midway are also planning to bring retro Mortal Kombat games to the Virtual Console.

Games will be bought by the purchase of Wii Points cards from retailers, which are then redeemed for games in the Wii Shop Channel. Games downloaded will be region specific, Japanese and American games cannot be downloaded onto a PAL (UK) console.

Satoru Iwata has stated that new titles could be developed and sold for £2-£5 (¥500-¥1000, $4-$9), and free downloads may be offered with the purchase of certain Wii titles.

Games that are downloaded will come with a free digital instruction manual. It has been stated by Nintendo that new games will be released every Monday after the Wii launch in America, and every Friday for Europe.

A new feature in the Virtual Console games is that when you exit the game by clicking the Home button on the Wii Remote, a suspend point is created which allows you to play from exactly the same place where you left the game.

VIRTUAL CONSOLE CLASSIC CONTROLLER

Price: £14 - €19 - $19.99 - ¥1,800 - AU$TBA

Release Date: December 8th 2006

Information: This controller allows you to play Virtual Console games on the Wii. The Classic Controller connects to the Wii Controller via a wire into the slot where the Nunchuk controller is usually inserted, and the Wii Controller acts as a wireless hub for the controller. There is a slot in the back of the Classic Controller that has an undisclosed purpose, but does not hold enough space to hold the Wii Remote, though it is opened by pressing a button on the controller. The GameCube Controller can be used to control Virtual Console games, as can a Wii Remote for certain games.

This website sells adapters that are plugged into the GameCube ports on the Wii and allow NES and SNES controllers to be plugged in and used to control their respective games.

Controls:

  • 1. D-Pad
  • 2. Dual Analogue Sticks
  • 3. Home Button
  • 4. - Select and + Start Buttons
  • 5. A and B Buttons
  • 6. Y and X Buttons
  • 7. Z Buttons (2)
  • 8. L and R Shoulder Buttons
  • 9. Wii Remote

The following table shows how the games can be controlled:

These can be purchased at retailers, and purchase online is unconfirmed. Aswell as being used to purchase Virtual Console games, these cards can be used to buy the Opera Web Browser for the Wii (although the browser is free in America until June 2007). Prepaid cards in Japan can be purchased in the varieties of 1,000, 3,000 and 5,000 Wii Points. All other regions including America and the UK will be able to purchase only 2,000 Wii Points cards. Accordding to GONINTENDO, the SEGA titles we were meant to recive tonight have been pushed back a week. Could this be because of a big launch on the VC tonight? E.g Mario Kart 64? I have my fingers crossed!

well its out in australia this week aparently so i presume we get it too.

i cant remember where i got that info however.

Yea I read Australia is getting MK this week and since the SEGA titles are pushed back i'm hoping for a decent Nintendo title such as MK or Alttp.Long shot but a guy can hold on to hope.

Well, considering that Taito is onboard, I would say yes.[/i]

OK. After all that game was great (at least I really liked it).

Also: If Taito is onboard: In that case we probably will (or at least could) see Lufia/Estpolis (maybe also real Lufia 1 - US/JP only released) too... Was also a Taito title....

Smart move by Sega, but I think they should bring out one of their three games, probably the one that isn't as well-received. If we do get Mario Kart and/or Zelda, then a lot of people will be buying points and checking out new releases. If they see the Sega game, they might think 'oh I've got some spare points and it's new, why not?' therefore increasing Sega's profit. Sega and Hudson should think about that and release the games that won't sell well along with big Ninty titles.

Mario Kart 64? Awesome awesome awesome. Will be buying. I never had it as I didn't have an N64 but whenever I went round a friend's house and played block fort on it i never wanted to stop playing.

Good news... the little birdie just dropped by with a little last-minute confirmation that we'll be getting Mario Kart 64 tonight. :)

So:

- Soldier Blade (Turbografx)

- Mario Kart 64 (N64)

I thought that was just for america, but that is great news.

It'll be my first VC title :)

I find logging on to the virtual console a real pain in the arse when it's busy like now - Come on Nintendo get some more servers up and running!

Hmmm error code 209600 this time grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Posted

Deadly, anyone d/l Mario Kart 64 yet? How many blocks does it take up?

I only got 700 points left, looks like i'll have to dig into my wallet tomorrow so.

I wish Nintendo would get a move on with allowing us to trade those useless Stars on the NoE site for Points.

Just looking at the "details" for Mario Kart 64 on the Shop Channel, you won't be able to save "ghost data" on it due to "technical" reasons. How could they have "technical" reasons, surely couldn't they just make a ghost file appear as a new save file on the Wii's memory?
