Virtual Console - All you need to know

Recommended Posts

Does the documentation say what the hell are those little things in the back for? Is this going to be a mystery for ever or am i out of date?

before the Wii came out i had thought it would be some method of attaching the wiimote to it so it won't be left hanging, but it's not

Still not too sure about it, what is everyone's impression of the classic controller? I really don't like the idea that you have to have it hooked up to the Wii Remote. I mean, if it's going to be wired then why not just make it USB? :hmm:

:

Trust me , its better to have the wire coming out of the controller, than the console. As far as the actual pad itself, i like it better than the SNES pad even.

Now for my weekly VC rant:

Today we got 2 (yes 2!) more games.

Gradius (NES)-a horizontal shooter

Soldier Blade(TG-16)-a vertical shooter

Great selection there Nintendo! Keep up the grueling work!

Gradius is awesome but im not buying it again

Also why are Nintendo and Hudson trying to be sneaky with the prices of certain games. R-Type is 200 points more than the rest of the TG-16 games and Nintendo tried to jack the price of Volleyball to 600 briefly but then went back to 500. WTF! Are you guys going bankrupt?

Here's a load of information that I've compiled into one source about the Virtual Console, the Classic Controller and everything associated with it.

VIRTUAL CONSOLE NEWS

08.01.07

R-Type for the Virtual Console (originally a TurboGrafx-16 game) appears as 800 Points in the Virtual Console instead of the usual 600 for TurboGrafx games. The reason for this is that it contains all eight levels - unlike the Japanese release which only included the first four levels as per the original HuCard.

25.12.06

Nintendo offer Super Mario Bros. and several other games as a 'Christmas present' to Wii owners

01.12.06

A video from the US Wii launch reveals in an interview with Reggie that GameBoy games on the Virtual Console are possible, and the majority of Japan's launch games are coming to the US

29.11.06

Reggie makes it clear that Nintendo are looking into all of the rights issues of getting GoldenEye from the Nintendo 64 onto the Virtual Console.

17.11.06

IGN claim that Banjo Kazooie may be coming to the Virtual Console despite Rare not making games for it.

10.11.06

Nintendo 64 titles on the Virtual Console are confirmed to not use rumble.

03.11.06

An NGamer interview with System 3 reveals that Impossible Mission and Leaderboard for the VC will be out in January (no regions are specified). California Games will include Summer Games I and II and will be online enabled and compatible with the Wii Remote. All games will include enhanced and original versions. A one-table demo will be available to download through the Wii Shop Channel of Gottlieb Pinball Classics.

23.10.06

IGN announce their plans to make a Virtual Console game playable with the utilisation of four Wiimotes

INFORMATION ABOUT THE VIRTUAL CONSOLE

The Virtual Console is a download service for the Wii that allows you to download new games and retro games from a back-catalogue of Nintendo consoles and formerly competing consoles. The games, once downloaded for a fee, will be playable via an SD card in the Wii or saved onto the Wii's internal 512MB flash memory, playable through the Wii Channels. If the memory ever fills up, a player can delete a game and re-download it at a later date for no added fee. Virtual Console games saved to SD cards cannot be played on another Wii other than the one it was downloaded to. If a console breaks, Nintendo will offer support on recovering the games.

Atlus, Namco Bandai, Banpresto, Capcom, Chunsoft, D4 Enterprise, Enterbrain, HAL Laboratory, Irem, Jaleco, KEMCO, Koei, Konami, NCS Masaya, Netfarm, Paon, Rocket Company, Square Enix, Sunsoft, Taito, Takara TOMY and Tecmo have pledged their support to the Virtual Console, joining Hudson Soft (who are planning to bring 100 titles to the Virtual Console) and Sega. Midway are also planning to bring retro Mortal Kombat games to the Virtual Console.

Games will be bought by the purchase of Wii Points cards from retailers, which are then redeemed for games in the Wii Shop Channel. Games downloaded will be region specific, Japanese and American games cannot be downloaded onto a PAL (UK) console.

Satoru Iwata has stated that new titles could be developed and sold for £2-£5 (¥500-¥1000, $4-$9), and free downloads may be offered with the purchase of certain Wii titles.

Games that are downloaded will come with a free digital instruction manual. It has been stated by Nintendo that new games will be released every Monday after the Wii launch in America, and every Friday for Europe.

A new feature in the Virtual Console games is that when you exit the game by clicking the Home button on the Wii Remote, a suspend point is created which allows you to play from exactly the same place where you left the game.

SEGA® of America, Inc. and SEGA Europe Ltd. today announced five titles from its SEGA Genesis™ library, Streets of Rage, Bio-Hazard Battle, Gain Ground, Comix Zone and Bonanza Bros. will soon be available on the Wii™ Shop Channel for download and play on the Wii's Virtual Console. Prices start at 800 Wii Points for SEGA Genesis titles. Wii Points can be purchased online or at select retailers at an MSRP of $20 for 2,000 points.

"The Wii Shop Channel is a great avenue for gamers who want instant access to classic SEGA Genesis titles," said Scott A. Steinberg, Vice President of Marketing, SEGA of America, Inc. "Legendary titles such as Streets of Rage, Comic Zone and Bonanza Bros. are a perfect fit for this platform and will be ready for download later this month."

Q1 2007 Line Up:

• Streets of Rage - This city was once a happy, peaceful, place…until one day, a powerful secret criminal organization took over. This vicious syndicate soon had control of the government and even the police force. The city has become a center of violence and crime where no one is safe. Amid this turmoil, a group of determined young police officers has sworn to clean up the city. Among them are Adam Hunter, Axel Stone, and Blaze Fielding. They decided to put their lives on the line and take back their city through their special hand-to-hand combat abilities. They are willing to risk anything, even their lives, on the Streets of Rage. (1991/© SEGA)

• Bio-Hazard Battle - An army of biogenetic mutants has gone haywire, terrorizing the world and putting the future of the planet in jeopardy. It's up to you to take on the mutant menace and restore order and harmony to the planet Avaron, before it's too late! Through eight levels of intense action, you'll be up against some of the nastiest, most vile creatures you've ever seen, things like mega amoebas, nuclear crabs, electroworms, and gut-grabbing insects. You have four different Bioship fightercraft to choose from, each with unique handling capabilities and weapons systems. Your mission will take you through cavernous mineshafts, the ocean floor, and the Biowar Lab, each populated by heinous creatures that only man could have created. Hop into your fightercraft and save Avaron from certain doom. (1992/© SEGA)

• Gain Ground - It's the 31st Century, and science and technology have progressed to the point that the human race is approaching perfection: no war, no poverty, and no conflict. With nothing to worry about, the human race seems destined to live forever in harmony; but what if Earth came under attack? By this point in time, people did not know how to cope with problems or conflicts, and had completely lost their survival instincts. In response to this, the United Earth Government created the Gain Ground system, a war simulator that would help humans rediscover their lost instincts. After several terrible malfunctions, the creators became prisoners in their own creation. Now it's up to you and two courageous comrades to go into the Gain Ground system, rescue your fellow humans, and destroy the system. You'll battle through different periods in history as you revive your survival instincts, while trying to stay alive! (1991/© SEGA)

• Comix Zone - Sketch Turner is an artist in New York City. One day while Sketch is drawing, there is a huge thunderstorm and a bolt of lightning hits Sketch's image, bringing it to life. That image is Mortus, a megalomaniac mutant who wants to become real and rule the earth. Mortus magically transports Sketch into the pages of his comic book so that he can end his creator's life and become real. Inside the comic book, Sketch meets General Alissa Cyan, who believes he is a superhero that came to save their post-apocalyptic world from the evil brought by Mortus' hand. Now that he's a comic book superhero, Sketch can fight like a one-man mercenary platoon! (1995/© SEGA)

• Bonanza Bros. - Mobo and Robo Bonanza are enjoying their favorite television show when the picture crackles and the shadowy figure of a mysterious stranger appears on screen. This figure asks them to collect certain items that he has placed inside various buildings to test his security force. If they return the items successfully, Mobo and Robo will be rewarded. The two of them agree to get the job done in just three minutes, however, they don't know yet that each building is packed with security guards who will raise the alarm if they are caught red-handed and a huge reward will be given out if Mobo and Robo are apprehended. Fortunately both Mobo and Robo are equipped with bullets that can knock the guards unconscious for a few seconds. Help the infamous Bonanza Bros. infiltrate a number of different locations ranging from banks to mansions to casinos and don't get caught! (1991/© SEGA)

Upcoming European VC titles revealed

January 9th, 2007

Owners of Nintendo’s revolutionary games console, Wii, are in for a retro treat at the start of 2007, with 36 new Virtual Console titles spanning Nintendo’s 20-year history available to download in Q1.

Gamers will be able to turn back the clock and enjoy titles which made their debut on the NES, SNES, N64, SEGA MEGA DRIVE and Turbografx (PC Engine).

Using the Wii’s Wii Shop Channel, gamers are able to download retro games to Wii’s Virtual Console. The Virtual Console games that will be added to the Wii Shop Channel in Q1 include 20 Nintendo titles, 7 Turbografx (PC Engine) games and 9 classic SEGA MEGA DRIVE games. New Virtual Console titles will be added throughout 2007 creating a constantly growing library of games.

Fans of Nintendo’s classic titles will be delighted by games from the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), Super Nintendo (SNES) and Nintendo 64 (N64), including Mario Kart 64, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Street Fighter II: World Warrior (CAPCOM), Super Probotector and the hugely popular Super Mario World.

SEGA is treating its fans with the release of a host of popular games including Streets of Rage, Bio-Hazard Battle, Bonanza Bros. and Comix Zone. Hudson will also be entertaining gamers with a selection of its best titles from Turbografx (PC Engine) including Soldier Blade, Double Dungeons and New Adventure Island.

Wii owners can download Virtual Console games using Wii Points. Wii Points can either be purchased online via the Wii Shop Channel using a credit card or users can purchase Wii Points by buying a Wii Points card in retail stores. These points can then be redeemed against Virtual Console games via the Wii Shop Channel.

Nintendo will also be rewarding its loyal customers by adding Wii Points to the Stars Catalogue available at http://www.nintendo-europe.com. When gamers purchase any Nintendo product they will receive Stars which can then be redeemed against items including Wii Points on the site. What’s more, Wii owners can synchronise their Nintendo-Europe.com account with their Wii Shop Channel one to earn Stars points on all Virtual Console downloads.

Virtual Console games range in price from 500 Wii Points for NES games to 800 Wii Points for Super Nintendo games and 1000 Wii Points for Nintendo 64 games. Wii points required for titles available in 2007 may vary. Wii Points Cards are available to buy in retail stores and are estimated to retail at around €20 (£14) for 2000 Wii Points. In the Stars Catalogue smaller fractions of Wii Points will also be available.

The Wii console is available at the estimated retail price of around €249 (£179 in the UK). Included with every Wii console is one wireless Wii Remote, a Nunchuk, Wii Sports game, Stereo AV Cable and the sensor bar for Wii’s unique control system. Software is available at the estimated retail price of between 49 Euros and 59 Euros (£34 to £39 in the UK

from the NOE site, important stuff is in bold! basically just follows on from segas announcement. I'll defo be getting Mario Kart 64, Streets of Rage and Comix Zone. hopefully this announcment means wii points will be on the star catalogue sooner rather than later!

Mario Kart 64 sounds good - but only if it's online. If not, I'll leave it. And I'm not going to buy OoT either, because I have it on GC and N64 anyway.

I'm doubting that Mario Kart 64 will be coming with any online features. NO games so far have had any extra work done to them and i'd wager getting any game to run online is just too much work to sell it at £7.00. I'd love it to be, but can't se it.

Please tell me you can change the controls (of the GC controller) on Donkey Kong Country, if not I've wasted 800 points.

As far as I know it is not possible...

That games are only really good playable with the Classic-Controller...

With Gamecube controller you can't run and jump together which makes the game nearly unplayable... With classic controller that is no problem...

But I have a similar question:

NES-Games and game controls on the classic controller suck...

It is just stupid to put the controls on a and y instead of e.g. a and x or b and y (like it is for SNES games).

Is that changeable (as I said as far as I know not)...

If not: Nintendo REALLY should make the controls CHANGEABLE...

I had EXACTLY the same problem when I bought it. So I got a classic controller the next day, still felt a bit cheated though.

Most games do warn that they may have been optimised for the Classic Controller. Cynically, i think its actually to encourage us to purchase classics.

Something I noticed, dunno if anyone has

When you go to purchase Super Mario Bros. It says it takes a max of 94 blocks. It actually takes 22 blocks. Does this mean that the upgrade that Shigsy once mentioned is going to be 94 blocks or are they having crazy fits?

I think ALTTP :heh:

And if there's gonna be an N64 game I say MK.

God I hope it's ALTTP.
