Sheikah Posted January 16, 2017 Posted January 16, 2017 I just read something that infuriates me. There is a Joy-Con charging grip that costs an extra £27.99. What? HOW is it not possible for Nintendo to allow charging via micro USB? There is absolutely zero reason for this. I can literally charge 5 devices I have at home with my phone charger: Phone (obviously), laptop, tablet, headphones and DS4. For some this is nitpicking but fuck me, Nintendo has lost the plot. Those accessories are getting out of hand. The worst bit is that the console comes with a regular grip which is exactly the same as the charging grip except it doesn't charge the controllers.

I didn't even know that. Oh boy... It's so frustrating...You know Nintendo's games will be great. I mean, just look at Zelda and Odyssey....But the hardware situation is absolutely ridiculous.

drahkon Posted January 16, 2017 Author Posted January 16, 2017 You can charge your laptop over micro usb? What laptop do you have? It's an Asus Transformer Book, so technically a tablet I guess. It's my laptop, though :p
bob Posted January 16, 2017 Posted January 16, 2017 Oh fair enough. I was surprised because I didn't think micro USB could draw enough power to keep a standard laptop charged. It might do, but I doubt it.
Shorty Posted January 16, 2017 Posted January 16, 2017 So lemme get this right, with the console bought out of the box and no extras, I'd have to stop playing on my TV in order to charge the controllers? Can you keep playing on the TV with the Switch in "portable" mode?
Glen-i Posted January 16, 2017 Posted January 16, 2017 Can you keep playing on the TV with the Switch in "portable" mode? Nope, that's called a WiiU.

Can you keep playing on the TV with the Switch in "portable" mode? Correct, you can't carry on playing unless you stop and put them on the side of the system every now and then. Given these controllers are so expensive it's not like you can just buy a spare either. I think it's a really cheeky cash grab - they're giving you the exact same plastic controller shell with the console just without whatever wiring needs to go in there to actually charge the system. It couldn't have cost them much at all to add the charging version to the pack.
Shorty Posted January 16, 2017 Posted January 16, 2017 It really is just a bit of plastic with a USB connection that splits two ways, literally a couple of quid's worth of components... might make my own!
Happenstance Posted January 16, 2017 Posted January 16, 2017 Its such a stupid decision, especially for people like me who dont plan on taking it out of the dock much! I refuse to buy the other grip though.
dazzybee Posted January 16, 2017 Posted January 16, 2017 The one bundled in should be a charging one, taking the piss. But the switch charges them too. I presumed most people would be using a pro controller or at least docking the controllers on thre switch when not using. What's the difference between charging on them on a charging grip, or the switch itself?

I think that's right.
Hero-of-Time Posted January 16, 2017 Posted January 16, 2017 (edited) Jim on point, as usual. *insert The Rock clapping gif* EDIT: You can't make this stuff up. He's got Nintendo fighting amongst themselves with his video. [TWEET]821053856452931585[/TWEET] Edited January 16, 2017 by Hero-of-Time

That's correct. The only way to charge the joy-cons without a charging grip is to put them on the side of the Switch. If you were viewing your game on the TV you'd have to either switch to handheld mode or stop playing, basically. A really daft choice of Nintendo.

Who games for over 20 hours?!
Sheikah Posted January 16, 2017 Posted January 16, 2017 But in what situation are they on the switch, but aren't charged? Except they last 20 hours... Who games for over 20 hours?! Yeah that is a point. Still annoying if you're not a diligent charger though.
dazzybee Posted January 16, 2017 Posted January 16, 2017 Yeah that is a point. Still annoying if you're not a diligent charger though. True, and I don't want to defend them to much because I think it is utterly ridiculous the one bundled isn't a charging one. But I was just thinking about the reality of it and I don't think it'll be that bad in practice. Though I'm planning on getting a pro controller so mine will be docked most of the time, if you don't get an additional and have it in the grip it could be a bit of a pain taking them out and attaching to the switch all the time if you plan on using it more of a home console.
Agent Gibbs Posted January 16, 2017 Posted January 16, 2017 Its a piss take that they've basically given you a plastic wiiwheel to hold them - I winged in the other thread about this, the charging one basically has some contacts in slots to line up with the joy con, some wires, a bit of circuitry board and a USB C! Seriously that would be next to nothing cost wise for the components and they are already had both types in production so its not as if there were set up costs! its just Nintendo being unreasonably tight and realising they can have another revenue source

Hello, f**king 4-player online Waverace or Mario Kart 64? I don't give a toss about the NES or SNES.

Hello, f**king 4-player online Waverace or Mario Kart 64?I don't give a toss about the NES or SNES. I imagine it would take more effort to get N64 games online but I agree it would have been a much better choice. Wave Race, Mario Kart, Smash, Mario Party etc would have been great to play online.
Glen-i Posted January 17, 2017 Posted January 17, 2017 Except they last 20 hours... Who games for over 20 hours?! Hello! Here I am to ruin your point! I played Kirby games for 24 hours straight with @Dcubed and @Ugh first aid.

I kind of presumed they'd add online to all VC games...

The statement they made about the VC said you get a NES or SNES game but they only mentioned the adding of the online when talking about the SNES.
