So it appears Sega are set to announce a new Sonic game at a 25th anniversary event on 22nd July. It also looks as if Sonic Team have been in charge of this one, and if that's the case, then it'll be their first Sonic game since 2013's Sonic: Lost Worlds. The platform(s) it's being developed for have yet to be determined.

What are you guys hoping for/expecting from this? Personally, I'm hoping for something with similar gameplay to Generations, although it'd be amazing if it were Sonic Adventure 3 (which I doubt is likely.) Also, it'd be nice for Sega to finally release a game in the franchise on PS4 and XBox One. Seeing a truely next-gen Sonic game would be amazing!

Of course, it could suck, but I really hope it doesn't...

Sonic Heroes 2 or bust... :p

I would seriously play that though.

So many hopes and dreams for this one, I'm sure that both @Josh64 and @Cube in particular share in the potential hype for what could be an excellent Sonic title. :D

A new Sonic Generations style title has been rumoured I'm sure, which would definitely make sense but personally for me, I would love a new 2D release in the series, Sonic 5 maybe? So like what was done with Sonic 4 a few years ago but with obviously better physics and more original zones.

Super Sonic being playable within all of the acts is obviously a key classic element which would be great to see again, which naturally means it will need a proper Special Stage or... y'know, just copy the best one from Sonic 2 again.

Or just shake up the formula again, of course it's a gamble as we could end up with something amazing like Sonic Colours or something less inspiring such as Sonic Boom; but that's like playing the slot machine in the Casino Night Zone... it's worth running the risk of triple Robotniks, if we end up with that elusive triple Jackpot then it may well just end up being a 25th Anniversary to remember for all the right reasons. : peace:

Just please no Shadow the Hedgehog 2 or Sonic '16 with "realistic" physics and broken gameplay. :hmm:

I would definitely be very excited for a new game in the Unleashed/Colours/Generations style, just improved and brought up to date.

Something new would be interesting, too.

Sonic 4 was a step in the right direction for me, an understanding of what needed to be done, just with some issues with execution.

Sonic games need to be made without gimmicks. No special "colours", no werehogs, no magic items or guest stars, no big robot walkers for Tails, no weird human stories. No group player-switch gameplay or cylindrical level layout. And greatly reduce the number of co-stars. All you need for a great Sonic game is speed, momentum and fantastic level design. Music and visuals help a lot too.

Some simple improvements to Sonic 4:

Better, slightly less cartoony visuals and a redesign for Sonic that captures sharp, classic coolness instead of modern... smoothness.

Zoom out! We're on HD consoles now, there's no need to match the scale of old.

Physics, whatever engine you were using, burn it to the ground. Put that momentum back in Sonic's shoes.

Better flow and more intelligent level design.

That said I wouldn't mind another good 3D Sonic either. I think SA2 was the last one I could consider good. But those need a big team and heaps of time and investment.

Yeah I'm down with Generations 2.

I thought that game was the right kind of direction.

Sonic 4 just didn't feel quite right, even though I did enjoy it.

I still think there's a load of levels they could re-do in 2d and then reimagine in 3d from the Sonic games.

I'd be happy with either a new Sonic Adventure, Sonic Generations 2 or back to the roots with another 2.5D Sonic like 4.

As gimmick-free as possible, just focus on the speed.

I'd prefer a Sonic 5. Classic 2D action with enhancements here or there but with the main focus on level design.

Just keep it to Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and Dr. Robotnik too (don't remember when or why they changed it to Eggman I hated the change).

An anniversary should celebrate what they did right, and I didn't personally play any decent Sonic games after Sonic & Knuckles, they were all awful, barring 4, which was okay,

It was always Dr Eggman in Japan and that was changed to Dr Robotnik in the West. They've recently confirmed again that technically his real name is Dr Robotnik and Eggman is just a nickname but he will pretty much always be called Eggman.

I enjoyed the actual gameplay of Sonic Generations but the "hub" and level-select bits were an absolute pain in the arse. I found the design messy and busy beyond belief. I'd prefer a much more straightforward design, or just a clearer or easier-to-use overworld.

The actual gameplay was fun. I'm also a fan of Sonic Colours, too. Wouldn't say no to more of that.

So, it's been announced, but the trailer doesn't reveal much. Still, it looks really promising!

...and it's for PS4 and XBox One. FINALLY! Also, is this actually the first NX game to get announced? XD

Kinda creepy how you basically predicted Sonic Mania

Nah another random game was announced about a month or so ago. Can't remember what it was but I remember it had some placeholder text for NX and some people thought that was the official logo!

Sonic Mania looks fucking amazing. I can't wait. It's pretty much exactly what I laid out above although I wouldn't have expected the old-school visuals, and that makes it even better.

Now I've actually got more time to post stuff, here's some of my impressions of the trailer:

One of the main things I like is how this seems to have a dark tone to it, but still keeps the Sonic vibe. With this "Join the Resistance" angle they're going for, I'm hoping that Robotnik has the upper-hand, and Sonic and his pals are freedom fighters trying to restore order to the world. I know Sonic Underground used this angle, but it'd be freshing to see the games use this concept. I also noticed it's City Escape/Radical Highway that's on fire in the trailer. With the inclusion of Classic Sonic, I'm sure there has to be a time travel aspect to the story somewhere.

Of course, I'm going to be cautiously optimistic, as we don't know much about this, plus the fact that Sega/Sonic Team have failed us so many times before. Still, early signs are promising, and I kinda can't help but get a bit excited!

Always nice when you get your wish! Will definitely pick this up. And I feel I kinda have to as I basically got everything I asked for.
