Problem is, Nintendo is the main developer whereas for the PS4 and XB1 there are tons of games due to it being better supported.

So comparing Nintendos output to that of Sony and Microsoft is not really fair.

You say Nintendo "are at least trying". I don't think so. Releasing around 5 games, 3 of which are platformers on their home console is not "trying" in my opinion. More like "can't be arsed"

Nintendo needs to get third parties on board. That's all.

The major problem is lack of third parties and that's the major conundrum they need to solve..

So we all agree.. If Nintendo create a platform that 3rd parties can get behind and give good support to, the NX will be a nice little machine...

Wow, do you really believe that? Like, seriously?

There is so much more than just having third party games that Nintendo need to address.

I don't understand how that makes the statement you made any less true?

You clearly just said that that's all they need to do. That is just one of many things they need to address.

Assuming they got third party games, e.g. buy paying to get ports...they still have online, system power, their image, their policies, their first party variation...a crap tonne of things to fix.

And as I said, there other issues but third party is the main issue.

As for first party variation, how many times do I have to fucking correct you with this? Get it into your god damned head.

Not a cool way to talk to people, man. Not cool at all.

Considering we have had this argument at least 4 times. You have made the claim, I have refuted it, you have ignored the evidence and keep returning with same said claim. It's bordering on ridiculous.

I apologise for losing my temper but come on.

Well, in my opinion, and in the opinion of many, they don't have much variation. That is the important thing here - opinion; some people may feel they have a varied output, while others don't. To me, a lot of their games feel quite similar, either in style, tone or gameplay. A lot of their games are platformers, or games we have seen from them before. When I see Smash 4 and Mario Kart 8 I don't think 'what variation in output' (call me unfair). Seeing the same sorts of games again and again makes me think Nintendo's output is the same kind of fare I've had many times before.

We also don't see as many indie games as we do on other platforms and those sorts of games feel far more varied to me than the bigger games.

They don't have many FPS games or the big sorts of games like Witcher 3. No realistic racers, and very few brand new titles in a new universe like Splatoon. I honestly don't feel the variation is there. When I think Nintendo consoles I think of very specific kinds of games, not a wide breadth of titles like I think of when I think PS4.

And third parties help fill those gaps.

You could argue the same of first party variation being low for Sony and Microsoft. Those are nowhere near as diverse as Nintendo's output, but we don't notice it because they have third parties propping up the lineup, which brings me back to my original point that Nintendo getting back third parties is the major issue.

I actually think Nintendo makes too many games, as crazy as that may sound. They would be better off putting all their staff into a handful of huge teams. So many of their games are of little consequence, and are not effective in actually selling the machine.

At the moment Nintendo has to support its consoles on its own, but that's because they don't play host to multi-format games. My ideal situation would be a console that matches the others in terms of power, controls and architecture. It would be the only console to have the few huge Nintendo titles, but also have genuinely big 3rd-party games to fill the gaps.

The one thing I 100% agree with Nintendo about this generation is the way they've handled Zelda. It looks amazing - exactly what they should have done - but it's also been slow. Imagine if Nintendo had teams that could produce games of that calibre once per year - Zelda would have arrived sooner, but Metroid, Kid Icarus and others could also be given that treatment. At the moment we're in a situation where too many gamers (understandably) just think "so what?"

Nintendo need some guidelines in place, everything feels so disjointed.

For starters, they need to agree with their first party developers across the board a standard online set-up. Some first party games let you jump into a game from the friend list, some don't and some don't even let you play with friends at all (Mario Tennis). Not only that, but whenever the do make progress, instead of working on it, they wipe the slate clean and start over. Mario Kart 8 is great, but its online isn't as good as it was on Wii. Instead of building upon and improving the online structure of the Wii game, they just started over.

DLC also seems all over the place. Mario Kart has great pricing, Smash seems oddly high and Splatoon, whilst initially giving away for free was great (as it was pretty bare bones) their recent offerings of new levels are also free - from a business stand-point this seems absurd - After a bunch of free content, I know plenty of people that would be more than happy to start paying for new Splatoon levels.

They also just completely ignore fans. People were desperate for Nintendo Land DLC, they had all the assets in place and needed to showcase the GamePad more so what did they do? Not bother. It might be too early to say, but Mario Maker is PERFECT for DLC and they're being oddly quiet on the whole situation, if they pass that up then I have no idea who's responsible for these decisions.

Then you have controllers. One game requires a Wii Remote, one a Wii Remote Plus, one also with a Nunchuk, one the Gamepad only, one doesn't support the Pro Controller, another supports everything. You can use a Pro Controller in some games, yet if they GamePad isn't turned on, the game won't work... Why?

I can see why Nintendo want to give developers free-reign to do what they want to keep morale high, but sometimes they need to put their foot down, perfect example being Retro. Letting them create ANOTHER 2D platformer when the console was inundated with them already was SUCH an idiotic move. They should have requested some sort of 3D adventure.

Nintendo have completely lost most gamers, hence the lack of Wii U sales, so they need to do their best to keep Nintendo gamers but they're failing to even do that. Ask most fans and Mario, Zelda and Metroid will be in their top 3 frachises. We didn't get a proper Mario title, no matter how much people try to tell me otherwise, I fail to believe that 3D World is anywhere near as ambitious or fresh as 64, Sunshine or Galaxy, it's lacking. Then we have Zelda which we're STILL waiting for and Metroid which we're clearly never going to get.

So for me to get an NX they're going to have to at least sort out the above. And if they can't get online, marketing, third-parties or hardware right, they should at least try to appease the core-fans and give us ONE proper entry per generation of the top franchises we know and love. This Zelda Wii U title should have been a priority, I don't care how, but they should have got in new people simply for assets whilst the core team work on gameplay and design or something because Wii U's big title is going to release too late and have to be ported to the NX. They made this mistake with Twilight Princess and instead of learning from it, they made the same mistake again.

I think a lot of people would have jumped on board this year if Zelda U was this Christmas release. They need to sort out their output and scheduling for NX.

@Serebii

Not quite right about the Wii U, I decided that if I could have the downloads I had paid for back I would grab another one to try out Mario maker.

Bought one on Saturday but it says my NNID is tied to another Wii U and I need to contact Nintendo support to see if it can be unlocked!

Mario Maker is good fun though!

The purchases are tied to the account. It's just the account is not easy to float. Delete the account and you'll delete everything on both 3DS and Wii U that was purchased with the account.

I am really, really hoping that once the NX comes out we will be able to tie down all downloaded purchases of games, DLC etc to an account which will incorporate the entire NNID so that if anything ever does go wrong, it's easy to redownload on another machine.

This whole business of losing EVERYTHING if you delete your NNID is quite frankly not just antiquated but bordering on the insane! :shakehead

I must have spent... over £500 or more - probably more - on Virtual Console titles, eShop titles, Retail games and DLC over the years, the thought of possibly losing it all is just terrifying. :(

More rumours.

Nintendo's new game console is scheduled to enter mass production at the end of the first quarter 2016 and despite the fact that the Japan-based company is targeting to ship 20 million units in 2016, the device's upstream component suppliers expect shipments to only reach around 10-12 million units. Foxconn Electronics (Hon Hai Precision Industry) reportedly has been chosen to manufacture the device, but the company declined to comment on its clients or orders.

The new console is estimated to enter mass shipments in the second quarter. In addition to Foxconn, suppliers such as Foxconn Technology, Macronix, Pixart Imaging, Coxon Precise Industrial, Nishoku Technology, Delta Technology, Lingsen Precision Industries and Jentech will also supply components for the device.

Digitimes Research expects Microsoft's Xbox One and Sony's PlayStation 4 to achieve shipments of 13 and 18 million units, respectively in 2016, and if Nintendo's new console is able to ship 10 million units in the year, the company will then be able to maintain its competitiveness in the market.

I put my hat firmly in the 2017 ring so I'll have to stick with that prediction :heh: I'd still love it to be the 'must-have' item for Christmas 2016, though

Q2 mass production sounds about right if it's gonna hit its November 2016 target (Of course that's not to say that it couldn't get delayed if the hardware or software isn't ready in time...)

From this, assuming that it's correct, I can gleam that this device utilises Flash storage (Macronix are flash storage specialists who designed the DS/3DS Game Card storage and provided the internal flash memory inside Wii & Wii U) and that it features some sort of optic sensor, coming from Pixart Imaging (most likely a camera).

Could go either way but I'm more inclined to believe that it's a handheld, going by the companies involved (also, you know, like I've said many times before. 3DS is due to be replaced first. It stands to reason).

My theory is, based on the fact Iwata described NX as a platform across multiple devices akin to iOS

Japan will get the handheld 2016, console 2017

US will get console 2016, handheld 2017

Europe will get both or something because outside of the UK, EU gaming tastes are some sort of weird mesh of both.

Let's hope Nintendo don't mess up the initial reveal this time. No cloak and daggers, no unnecessary secrecy,no confusion.

In February or March they should show the console with the pad and tell us what's under the hood.

Reveal bits and pieces of what features the OS has and then E3 show games and tell us more.

How credible would you guys say these sources are? And yeah, the best approach is to be as open as possible to save any confusion. I liked how they released that short but sweet statement about the 3DS outlining exactly what it was before the big blowout a bit later on. Saving everything for e3 doesn't always work as the Wii U reveal confirmed.

Foxconn leaks are generally pretty accurate. A winter 2016 launch makes too much sense anyway - they can't afford another year with their current sales as it's not going to get any better.

I think Winter 2016 is the earliest they can release it really. I was hoping Nintendo would atleast give the Wii U a passable life span... 4 years just seems too harsh. But seeing how few games appear on the radar...

It's always the same people guessing wrong. ;)
