Cookyman Posted November 9, 2013 Posted November 9, 2013 Not a dealbreaker but interesting. Unlike the PS4, the Xbox One won't support 3D Blu-ray playback at launch Now that Microsoft has adopted Blu-ray for its upcoming Xbox One, some of you might have been wondering if this next-gen console will support 3D Blu-ray movies. Well, the answer is no, or at least not yet. Back in May, Director of Xbox Programming, Larry Hryb aka Major Nelson, vaguely confirmed 3D and 4K output on the Xbox One, but his company has recently told CNET that the machine will be shipped without 3D Blu-ray playback capability. Having said that, there's still a chance of adding this feature via an update later on. On the other hand, Sony has just confirmed to us that the PS4 will definitely come with both 3D Blu-ray playback (requires the 1.50 firmware update and then a one-time activation) and 3D gameplay (albeit a current lack of 3D titles). And while there's no 4K output for games just yet, the Japanese giant is considering adding support for 4K still images and video to the console, as mentioned in its lengthy. Source: CNET A bit draconian don't you think? Sony seem to think so. A few lucky Xbox fans received quite the treat this week, finding their Xbox One pre-orders had shown up weeks ahead of the new console’s official Nov. 22 launch. According to numerous reports, the early deliveries came through Target—an obvious miscalculation somewhere in shipping and receiving. One of the consoles has already gone up on eBay for a Buy It Now price of $10,000, but it was swiftly taken down after gaining widespread attention. Twitter user Moonlightswami, who also got his Xbox One early, saw fit to be much more productive with the console’s early arrival, going through a number of features and sharing his findings. As many feared, there’s a required 500MB update that users need to download before games can even be played. As expected, Moonlightswami’s console has already been banned from Xbox Live for his troubles, though Microsoft’s Major Nelson has reached out in an effort to clear this mess up. Before any of that, however, Moonlight found that listings for games in the Marketplace include titles like NBA 2K14, Madden and FIFA. Others like Dead Rising 3 and Call of Duty: Ghosts are also available—each game’s size ranges from as low as 8GB up to 43GB. Moonlight was able to confirm that games can be played while they’re installing, but only once they’ve surpassed the 50 percent mark. Other findings include a neat “featured challenges” section, some interface changes, and Moonlight’s opinion on the Xbox One’s Game DVR feature, which he said is just ok. We’re in the home stretch now heading into the next generation of gaming; the PlayStation 4 is launching on Nov. 15, which is just days away, but it appears the Xbox One has technically come out first. Asked whether he’d ban users who received their console early, Sony’s Shuhei Yoshida said, “No.”

Cookyman Posted November 11, 2013 Posted November 11, 2013 Blimey this is a bit Orwellian. Sony has admitted that it can “monitor and record” your PlayStation Network (PSN) activity on the PS4. The updated Terms and Conditions for the PS4 reveal that Sony can actively monitor PSN communication and record all your activity at its discretion. Any information the Japanese electronics giant does collect about you via PSN can be used by it or other affiliate companies to prosecute you under law. It did add that although Sony can monitor “all PSN activity”, it makes “no commitment to do so.” “We reserve the right in our sole discretion to monitor and record any or all of your PSN activity and to remove any of your UGM [user generated media] at our sole discretion, without further notice to you.”“We reserve the right in our sole discretion to monitor and record any or all of your PSN activity and to remove any of your UGM [user generated media] at our sole discretion, without further notice to you.” These new, updated T&Cs also apply to all existing PlayStation systems, including PlayStation 2, PSP, PS Vita, PlayStation 3 as well as the incoming PS4. “Your use of PSN and our community features may be recorded and collected by us or sent to us by other users as described in 13.1. Any information collected in this way, for example, your UGM, the content of your voice and text communications, video of your gameplay, the time and location of your activities, and your name, your PSN Online ID and IP address, may be used by us or our affiliated companies to enforce these Terms and the SEN Terms of Service, to comply with the law, to protect our rights and those of our licensors and users, and to protect the personal safety of our employees and users.” Sony has urged PS4 users not to be worried about the company having a permanent record of their PSN activity, despite the fact it can be used against them. “This information may be passed to the police or other appropriate authorities. By accepting these Software Usage Terms, you expressly consent to this.” ShopTo sent out a video update to all of their PS4 customers today regarding their current order status. Could have been worse they could have had this guy as a forklift driver.

Ashley Posted November 11, 2013 Posted November 11, 2013 Are we really surprised they can? Call me jaded but I kind of expect everyone can monitor everything nowadays. Whether they do and what they do with it is a different story, obviously, but the ability isn't news to me.

Exactly...I outright assume everything is monitored...how else can you explain when not using adblocker that within seconds of searching for something on google your facebook ads are tailored to that search. Everything clearly loops back round and across and piped through to the ultimate aim of something....
Cube Posted November 11, 2013 Posted November 11, 2013 A lot of games already send data to the developers. Some - like BioWare - are pretty open with this and release statistics.
Agent Gibbs Posted November 11, 2013 Posted November 11, 2013 don't the NSA monitor Kinect as it is? :p
MATtheHAT Posted November 12, 2013 Posted November 12, 2013 PS4 versions of Don’t Starve & The Binding of Isaac free on PS Plus at their launch PlayStation Plus subscribers can look forward to free PS4 downloads of indie sensations Don’t Starve from Klei Entertainment and The Binding of Isaac from Team Meat when both games launch. Fancy that. It comes from a Sony event in New York, during which the PS4 interface was shown in full. Check it out through the link. Joystiq reports that Don’t Starve should launch, “early January,” and will be free on PS Plus at day one. A rep also said, “A Vita native version with cross-save is coming a couple months after the PS4 version,” and that both the PC and PS4 builds will receive parallel updates from a certain point. Meanwhile, The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth is said to launch early 2014 on PS4, Steam and PS Vita. It is also said to be launching for free on PS Plus, but we’d hold out for confirmation of this first. What do you think? Will you check them both out? PS4 launches November 15 and November 29 in the US and Europe/UK respectively. http://www.vg247.com/2013/11/12/ps4-versions-of-dont-starve-the-binding-of-isaac-free-on-ps-plus-at-launch/
Hero-of-Time Posted November 12, 2013 Posted November 12, 2013 Sony and Amazon team up. You read that headline right. We're very excited to introduce the Amazon Playstation Network Store, an alternate venue to purchase digital Playstation content for Playstation 3, Playstation 4, and Playstation Vita. The downside of going all digital for the next-gen consoles was going to be restricting yourself to only one storefront for potential deals, but now that's not an issue. Sony already leaves its competitors in the dust when it comes to sales, especially with its Playstation Plus program, and adding Amazon's deal muscle to the mix increases the potential savings exponentially. To celebrate the launch of the store, Amazon will be offering $5 PSN credit back on select digital purchases, and even better, customers who participate in the limited time buy two get one free promotion starting at noon ET today (Tuesday) will also get a bonus $5 PSN credit. HERE'S the store.
Cube Posted November 12, 2013 Posted November 12, 2013 Nice to see Nintendo's digital code strategy becoming more common.
Ashley Posted November 12, 2013 Posted November 12, 2013 Basically saving this for myself to read at a later date: http://www.computerandvideogames.com/437646/features/winning-formulas-the-story-of-playstation-4/
Mr-Paul Posted November 12, 2013 Posted November 12, 2013 Basically saving this for myself to read at a later date: http://www.computerandvideogames.com/437646/features/winning-formulas-the-story-of-playstation-4/ Isn't it a little early to say it's a winning formula?? It might totally fail! (although that's unlikely) I read earlier that there's no folder system to arrange your games on the PS4 at launch. They're sorted by recently played/most played. I wonder if they'll take as long as Nintendo to make them appear!?!? :p

Cookyman Posted November 12, 2013 Posted November 12, 2013 Pretty impressive eh? Still don't want Knack though! PS4 disc install trials: Knack playable in seconds, Killzone under 3 minutes At a New York event yesterday, Sony demonstrated install speeds - the time from the point the disc is inserted, install is initiated and play can begin - for retail versions of two PS4 launch games: Knack and Killzone: Shadow Fall Knack, the action-adventure game from PS4 architect Mark Cerny, will take only tens of seconds before play can begin after priming the installation, Kotaku reports. Killzone: Shadow Fall will take a bit longer to reach play, Polygon reports, because there is an unskippable introduction movie and mandatory profile set-up. Guerrilla Games Managing Director Hermen Hulst told Polygon it takes under three minutes total to get into gameplay. Sony outlined the launch limitations of its PS4 console last month. All retail PS4 games will have to install data to the console's 500GB hard drive, which can be manually swapped out should the need for more space arise. The PS4 won't let users store data on an external hard drive or memory stick.
