General Gaming Sales/Charts Discussion

Recommended Posts

This is an interesting titbit. Can only good news for everyone.

Indeed.

Looks like they will be ready to discount the price when they choose to do so. It's always a good thing to make discounts when it's the right time, rather than it being forced on by poor sales.

I know i've said this before in the past but it's crazy just how well everything has gone for Sony with the PS4. The difference between the company when the PS3 launched and now is night and day.

Just bringing it back to Nintendo for a second, here are a couple of graphs someone of Gaf has put together using Nintendo's sales numbers.

ibj9FevdrWqbPe.png

ibl2sbZnVcifRV.png

After you eliminate the expanded audience bump you can easily see the downward trend. I didn't realise that the handhelds were on a downward trend as well.

Looking at this you can understand why Nintendo wanted to capture that expanded audience. Just a shame they couldn't hold on to them.

Those graphs really hit home how bad the Wii U is doing and the way Nintendo as a whole are heading. They're painting themselves into irrelevance but it doesn't have to be like this. They just need to cop on. Changes have to be made. 1 and 1/2 years in and I can nail on with absolute guarantee that Wii U is already going to be Nintendo's worst performing console. Hell, I said it before it launched that it was doomed to failure and got lambasted for it.

Japan's love of mobile gaming gives some interesting results.

CESA also says that Japan’s market for smartphone games reached US$3.5 billion in 2013.

There is no number for 2012, but for 2011, CESA said that this specific segment was worth US$370 million. That’s a pretty impressive growth rate.

Japan is the only country in the world with a sizable market for feature phone gaming. And it is still pretty sizable: for feature phone games, CESA saw a US$1.6 billion market in Japan in 2013 (2011: US$2.2 billion).

So the key takeaway here is, according to CESA:

Japan’s mobile gaming market in 2013 was, at US$5.1 billion, bigger than the one for console (hardware and software combined, [includes handhelds]) at US$4 billion.

No wonder all the Japanese developers are wanting a piece of this action.

Nintendo sells off product-tracking subsidiary

Nintendo has reportedly sold off long-time subsidiary SIRAS, a service which it originally developed to better track returns for its game systems.

Since it was founded in 1999, SIRAS expanded to provide "omnichannel and profitability strategies" for more than 70 brands, though it remained a wholly owned subsidiary of Nintendo of America.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that Nintendo has sold off the division to InComm, a debit, gift and prepaid card technology company based in Atlanta. Financial specifics of the deal were not divulged.

According to Eurogamer, MGS5 Ground Zeroes sold three times as many copies on PS4 as X1. That's a pretty demonic lead they seem to be having.

Indeed, the latest UK sales chart is ridiculous when looking at the Watch Dogs sales for both, PS4 in top ten, X1 barely in top 40! The strange thing though is how Titanfall is still so high yet Infamous has dropped out completely and had been significantly lower for awhile.

I wouldn't waste time trying to figure out that UK market. It's a headache. :p

Titanfall bundles. People think Titanfall hasn't been that much of a success for XB1 but without it what XB1 sales would be way worse.

Or the fact that the console market over there is bordering on irrelevancy. None of the home consoles are doing well.

Just funny the talk only started once the ps4 bombed though, never mentioned before. In fact there was anticipation to how it would do... Fine it quite painful to be honest.

Also, Japan is so important to the mediums history that we should keep aware.
