jayseven Posted October 9, 2012 Posted October 9, 2012 They'll break the speed barrier with their fall. Thankfully I should've been asleep hours ago. I don't think I could watch the live stream; I'd be too terrified the guy catches fire or passes out and/or goes splat.
Debug Mode Posted October 9, 2012 Posted October 9, 2012 Been waiting for fucking hours now, c'mon Red Bull, ram a can down his throat.
Retro_Link Posted October 9, 2012 Author Posted October 9, 2012 (edited) And it's go! EDIT: Crap! :p Aborted for today. Due to gusty winds. Edited October 9, 2012 by Retro_Link
Retro_Link Posted October 9, 2012 Author Posted October 9, 2012 Just heard on the news that tomorrows weather doesn't look good (windy) for it either, so it could be a few days before they try again. Apparently even once the balloon is airborn and accending they only want it to come into contact with winds of 6mph! Fuck me it's gotta to be one calm day to have so little wind for the journey up!
Debug Mode Posted October 14, 2012 Posted October 14, 2012 Just gone 1am here, thank god we actually got lift off this time. I've got uni in the morning, so this may be a bad idea!
MoogleViper Posted October 14, 2012 Posted October 14, 2012 If he stays at this speed then it'll take about 1 hour 45 before he reaches the top.
dwarf Posted October 14, 2012 Posted October 14, 2012 He's just gone beyond the Armstrong line http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Armstrong_limit
Retro_Link Posted October 14, 2012 Author Posted October 14, 2012 This is so fucking incredibly exciting! Such an event! Fascinating listening aswell!
MoogleViper Posted October 14, 2012 Posted October 14, 2012 I think I'm correct in saying, that he will jump when the balloon stops rising. They've calculated this to be 36,576m, though nobody has reached this height in a balloon before, so it might be even higher.
Fierce_LiNk Posted October 14, 2012 Posted October 14, 2012 This is so fucking incredibly exciting! Such an event! Fascinating listening aswell! It definitely is. I love the shots of the Earth, how you can see the curvature of it and the scale. I can't contemplate falling towards that.
Debug Mode Posted October 14, 2012 Posted October 14, 2012 We all ready for a serving of human pancake then?
MoogleViper Posted October 14, 2012 Posted October 14, 2012 Does anybody know if this is being shown on any TV channels? It definitely is. I love the shots of the Earth, how you can see the curvature of it and the scale. I can't contemplate falling towards that. In case you missed it, the curvature you see is due to the wide angle lens. The actual curvature isn't that pronounced. Although that's around the height at which you can begin to see the Earth's curvature.

I heard something about the BBC being mentioned, but that was to do with filming this for a documentary, if I heard right. Ahh, boo. I didn't know that about the lens. Still, it looks great on screen.
dwarf Posted October 14, 2012 Posted October 14, 2012 A visor problem may rule out the jump. Bottle-job!
MoogleViper Posted October 14, 2012 Posted October 14, 2012 Not yet. He appears to have stopped climbing at ~38.93 km. So they're just doing final checks and he should be jumping any minute.
Ganepark32 Posted October 14, 2012 Posted October 14, 2012 BBC News 24 are showing it live if people are having trouble with the Youtube stream. That's where I'm watching it now as the stream was taking a hammering. But incredibly exciting waiting for the jump to happen. And incredibly anxious.
MoogleViper Posted October 14, 2012 Posted October 14, 2012 I love how the shape of the balloon has changed due to the pressure. Also as hey are decreasing the capsule's air pressure, it began to rise gain, (which I assume is) due to the reduced weight (from having no air in).
Mokong Posted October 14, 2012 Posted October 14, 2012 How long is the fall meant to take? He over 4 mins now EDIT And there's the chute EDIT2 I assume he had a helmet cam or similar set up on the suit yeah? Hope to see footage from his point of view, bet it'll be awesome to see
