Ashley Posted November 10, 2010 Posted November 10, 2010 "Boo cuts" is essentially the message - http://www.demo2010.org/ On my way now but seems a few people I know are going so if anyone is around (and has my number) drop me a text. If you're not around check out The Guardian's live coverage - http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/blog/2010/nov/10/demo-2010-student-protests-live
ReZourceman Posted November 10, 2010 Posted November 10, 2010 Interesting. Tellyn is going and I think Chair might be going. NE protest FTLULZ.
Cube Posted November 10, 2010 Posted November 10, 2010 Wouldn't it be better to protest about where cuts are going, and not the cuts themselves?
Ellmeister Posted November 10, 2010 Posted November 10, 2010 I was supposed to go, but I have too much stuff to do today. Our "leader" person just labelled it as a chance to drink and have fun whilst trying to do something right. Hardly sold it to me. Just been reading the live feed though, pretty good to see people from all around are turning up. Aberdeen
Mr-Paul Posted November 10, 2010 Posted November 10, 2010 Wouldn't it be better to protest about where cuts are going, and not the cuts themselves? It's primarily about student tuition fee rises to £9,000, and cuts to education.
Charlie Posted November 10, 2010 Posted November 10, 2010 There's a few free buses going there from Strathclyde in Glasgow. I presume the other Glasgow Unis will be doing the same thing.
Daft Posted November 10, 2010 Posted November 10, 2010 I'm off there now. You'd be a fool to miss out on this march, the weather is fanfuckingtastic today.
Paj! Posted November 10, 2010 Posted November 10, 2010 I woke up too late to go/excuse. I forgot Chair was going and others here. Could have met up.
Wesley Posted November 10, 2010 Posted November 10, 2010 I don't think I'd protest because I'm not against the cuts. That seems logical.
Charlie Posted November 10, 2010 Posted November 10, 2010 Just a quick thought. Why are people in Scotland protesting? Education is a devolved issue and therefore the increase in fees won't affect Scottish students.
The fish Posted November 10, 2010 Posted November 10, 2010 Just a quick thought. Why are people in Scotland protesting? Education is a devolved issue and therefore the increase in fees won't affect Scottish students. Not that it makes much difference to them anyway...
Wesley Posted November 10, 2010 Posted November 10, 2010 Good to see the protesters didn't come off looking like a bunch of cunts.
Wesley Posted November 10, 2010 Posted November 10, 2010 Heh, I'm sure it was only a few that fucked it all up. But yeah a lot of the footage on the BBC makes the protesters look very bad. Kind of the stereotype of what people have of youth today, quite violent and yobbish. *shrug*
Daft Posted November 10, 2010 Posted November 10, 2010 It's amusing because I had no idea there was any trouble. I marched all the way from my university to Parliament and have only just seen the ruckus on the news. It was really chilled actually. Lots of samba bands. Actually, it's not amusing. It's depressing. Or it would be depressing but it's everyone for themselves and I'll have my degree by the end of this year so why should I care? I do, really.
Mr-Paul Posted November 10, 2010 Posted November 10, 2010 March was good, felt great to be among so many students standing up for the same cause. Was at the start of the riots outside Tory HQ (had no idea that's where it was until now!), got some good pics that i'll upload later, was right near the fire and then saw people trying to break into the building. Decided to leave it there and not get involved in any of the violence so left and had a McDonalds
Goron_3 Posted November 10, 2010 Posted November 10, 2010 Well there's always people who miss the point. And then there's that. Nice bit on counter-productivity guys :/
Daft Posted November 10, 2010 Posted November 10, 2010 This is an entertaining read. Student protests of yore: a 60s rebel looks back
Ellmeister Posted November 10, 2010 Posted November 10, 2010 Wow, after hearing about the riots/ damage caused it is hardly going to go down well. Why would the government listen to anything violent people say? Not the cleverest I think.
The Bard Posted November 10, 2010 Posted November 10, 2010 I'm off there now. You'd be a fool to miss out on this march, the weather is fanfuckingtastic today. You need to live in Berkeley. The scene over there has the same cavalier attitude towards recreational protesting =p. I was gonna go, but I had essays to do.
Daft Posted November 10, 2010 Posted November 10, 2010 Wow, after hearing about the riots/ damage caused it is hardly going to go down well. Why would the government listen to anything violent people say? Not the cleverest I think. You'd have to be dumber than stupid to think that those people were anything but an absolute minority.
Ellmeister Posted November 10, 2010 Posted November 10, 2010 I never said anything about majority. Obviously its the minority, but that still won't help the protest.
Charlie Posted November 10, 2010 Posted November 10, 2010 I don't know what the NUS expected, sending 24000 students down to London from Unis, a lot of which were billing as a day off uni to get pissed on the streets. Sure fire way to get your opinion heard.
