Valentine's Day 2010

Recommended Posts

I'm half expecting moaning from people who itch at the thought of this date, but who is doing anything nice this Sunday? I suppose the reason I ask is because this is my first Valentine's with my new girlfriend, who I love stupendously, and has shown me that there are genuine, lovely women out there who aren't just trying to selfishly manipulate you. On the same day last year I was taking a homebaked vegan chocolate and strawberry cake to my (then) girlfriend's house to surprise her, who immediately took me to the shop for ten minutes while the person she was cheating on me with fled from her house. And funnily enough, I was subject to a lecture from her mother afterwards about not giving them notice that I was turning up. Truly a nasty family.

It's heavily commercialised, but I believe it's a time where you reflect on your relationship (if you have one) and try pull out all the stops. If you genuinely love someone, you'll be happy to put in the extra time and effort one day a year to make them feel truly special. Because given how busy people sometimes are, they actually need a set day when they can focus on each other.

This Sunday we're booked in at the excellent Sapporo Teppanyaki in Manchester, what I can only describe as a glorious Japanese restaurant. The chefs are unbelievably talented and fun to watch, and the food is great:

My girlfriend wanted to see the Valentines Day movie so we are going to see that, don't really mind. Then I'm secretly taking her to her favourite restaurant

Also bought this little picture frame that holds 5 different sized photos, and I've taken the effort to already print out a couple of photos of us and some of her friends to put in it :)

I don't believe in the whole idea of it, so I joined a 'F**k valentines day...its pancakes day on the 16th' group on facebook merely as a joke. She noticed and proceeded to refuse me pancakes on pancake day. So I backed down and left the group so that we can have pancakes on pancake day. Because really, that's the best day of the year.

*sniffs*

DID SOMEONE SAY PANCAKES?

After the usual crying in my bathroom with the shower pouring over me as a form of pathetic fallacy, while eating chunky Monkey icecream for 4 hours....

I will be spending Valentines Day probably watching Desperate Housewives/Curb Your Enthuasism/Mobile Suit Gundam/Xena Warrior Princess. :D

I don't get relationships. :p

This.

Although, I don't remember ever really celebrating valentine's day. Lack of anyone special + the fact it was when my grandma died years ago and a black cloud has cast over the day ever since.

I'm taking the woman ice skating, and then we're gonna gorge ourselves on as much Nando's as we can possibly devour in one sitting. Then some protracted, animalistic humping to a sountrack of Marvin Gaye and Luther Vandross. Or not, who knows? It's gonna be perfect. Perfectly banal.

Oooh Cirque du Soleil, nice. I love them. =)

As for me, nothing at all as far as I know. This will be the first Valentine's day where I have someone (who is also actually physically here), but I don't care too much about the day. As with Paj, it reminds me of when my grandmother died. Even though that happened 15 years ago already, Valentine's Day will always remind me of it.

Plus if you love someone, it's a bit silly to show that on just that one day. It's more special if you do nice things on other random days of the year. At least to me it is.

I feel what you're saying, but I'd say an anniversary would be better/more personal.

I have bought my girlfriend a card though.

The year is 2001 - the first Valentines day Mr_Odwin has with his girlfriend. She hands him a card. He opens the envelope, pulls out the card and reads it. The first thing Mr_Odwin does at this romantic time is to point out a spelling mistake the girlfriend has made in the card.

And thus Valentines Day was forever destroyed. No more to be celebrated.

Haaha, that's hilarious :) Agreed though, pancake day is pretty special!

I have skillfully managed to avoid ever having a gf for actual Valantines day. In past years we had a tradition of playing golf instead... funtimez

This year me and my friend's student radio show falls on the day so we're doing love songs vs breakup songs, should be fun

Oh I show love every day, but it's a day that you try to make extra special.

I'm guessing most people don't book hotels, meals and special events all in one day, every day of the year. It's a day that drives people to pull out all the stops, more than they would every other day of the year.

It's like your birthday. Technically if you were born on the 13th of February 1990 you would be 7304 days old, and tomorrow you'd be 7305 days old. Except another way of looking at it is that today you'd be 19, and tomorrow 20. Really there's no reason why you should celebrate tomorrow, as you'd just be an extra day older, yet people consistently do. Have you ever celebrated your birthday?

Valentine's is no different. It's an event that people can choose to celebrate, and it's fun and full of love. It doesn't mean that they fail to show love the other 364/365 days of the year. So yeah. :)

A little self-moaning and pity, then an hour of wailing my eyes out while listening to sappy love songs, and finally a bout of chocolate ice cream eating. Then I shall muse over how I fail at love.

But yeah, I don't see why Valentine's Day should be any different. :p

On Valentine's Day I'm going to London to protest the state funding of the Pope's visit to the UK.

That is by far the best Valentines Day plan I have heard.

I'll not be doing much this year. Last year I was just fairly pleased to be single as I had recently ended a relationship...a relationship which had started on Valentines Day 2008 :heh:

But this year....nothing planned whatsoever. Ah well.

Sunday I will be working 11-5 then going to a girl's house, where she will cook me dinner and I will get us both drunk as we play chess and backgammon, and I try to get into her pants.

Wednesday my ex is coming to m'hall and we're going to go see that shitty valentines movie and shop.

I will be treating my hand to a new type of lotion. I'm quite looking forward to it.

That's really cool, I wanted to do that... but, well, there are excuses at the end of the day I guess.

So yeah my girlfriend is in America, so I've posted a card and I managed to find a florist near her who accepted Paypal...

But Valentines Day is lovely...

I know people moan about it being commercialised, but if that's how you view it then that's your deal...

I bet you happily shove cock, sorry - I mean chocolate in your mouth a few weeks after for to celebrate someone coming back to life.

Man that sounds stupid, someone coming back to life... morons...

And then the other people who say, "Oh, you treat someone you supposedly Love nice for a day because you're told to and the rest of the year it's no effort."

Well, No.

The rest of the year there is effort and random surprising of flowers, etc. This is just a nice way of making time for each other, pushing other commitments of life out of the way for a day and just... fucking, being happy.

I seem quite bitter don't I?

I had a shit day yesterday I guess.

Also, it's the first time I won't be with my girlfriend on Valentines Day for 5 years, so kind of lame.

Having an picnic indoors, drinking slightly excessively and watching DVD's with my female compatriot. We will then likely get slightly naughty and go to sleep.

This is very true, However, you still need to show your love on Valentines day with a nice gesture as well as random times.

You try telling my missus that we're not doing anything for valentines day cos it's silly. She would go mental. :)
