Strange Cookie Posted March 30, 2010 Posted March 30, 2010 While I'm pretty interested in this, I'm not really enthralled to make my own racing tracks. Call me lazy, but I want the developers to come up with some classic designs for me. But if LBP is anything to go by, there will be some awesome user generated content outthere in notime. Still, I somehow think this hasn't got the longterm-appeal or flexibility of LBP. Let's hope I'm proven wrong.

I must say that Modnations Racers is one of the reasons that will make me get a PS3 (one of :P another one is Demon's Souls). Like Strange Cookie said, i will be looking forward to the user generated content just like it happened on LBP. And... having stumbled on a vid of an user generated track that was a replica of GCN Peach Beach.... whoa... what a beauty. I'm going to have so much fun there!!
flameboy Posted April 29, 2010 Posted April 29, 2010 Got a free early demo code for the PSP version if anyone wants it....I played the PS3 demo and it half interested me doubt the PSP version is gonna do anything for me.
Emerald Emblem Posted April 29, 2010 Posted April 29, 2010 Link This alone, brought my little brother off the pre-order fence.
dwarf Posted May 12, 2010 Posted May 12, 2010 I thought their review was quite harsh on the game, not that I've played it. I won't be buying this mainly due to the load times. They were horrendous in the beta and it doesn't sound like they've tackled them. (I've never had too much interest in the game though)
tapedeck Posted May 16, 2010 Posted May 16, 2010 Does the patch sort the load times as that was also my main gripe with the Beta.
Daft Posted May 16, 2010 Posted May 16, 2010 I think I might pick this up today because I'm amazingly bored. Or maybe I'll get Pokemon Black and White...or whatever it's called...if it's out... Weird, I haven't bought a Nintendo game since Mario Galaxy way back at the end of 2007. Edit: Wrong, Smash Bros in early 2008.
Goafer Posted May 16, 2010 Posted May 16, 2010 Why is everyone talking like it's been released. Doesn't it come out next week?
Cookyman Posted May 17, 2010 Posted May 17, 2010 "Half man, half horse, half motorcycle - all awesome" Kevin Butler is a fucking genius - do the E3 Sony prsentation please KB!
Daft Posted May 17, 2010 Posted May 17, 2010 (edited) Haha!! That was amazing when Jack Tretton came in. Edited May 17, 2010 by Daft
Goafer Posted May 20, 2010 Posted May 20, 2010 This game is meh. Can't wait till payday when I can get Red Dead Redemption.
ReZourceman Posted May 21, 2010 Posted May 21, 2010 This game is meh. Can't wait till payday when I can get Red Dead Redemption. Oh really? Awww man. Stealth attack from the brisk north-westerly fail gale.
Happenstance Posted May 21, 2010 Posted May 21, 2010 Ive tried the demo and I thought it was ok, just a bit average. I'll probably still get the game but not until it comes down in price, after the reviews werent brilliant I was always gonna get Red Dead first anyway.
Cube Posted May 21, 2010 Posted May 21, 2010 Didn't they also kind of shoot themselves in the foot by revealing LBP2 and that you can make racing games in it?
Happenstance Posted May 21, 2010 Posted May 21, 2010 Well its not the same developer that makes LittleBigPlanet that makes ModNation Racers so the announcement wasnt anything to do with them
Choze Posted May 22, 2010 Posted May 22, 2010 Well i have the game and its excellent. Mostly done single player career mode. I am about half way though. Its quite addictive. The later tracks are amazing in comparison to the early tracks (like the one in the demo). Handling seems better than the beta mainly I think because of the framerate. Split screen works well too even if there are some downgraded graphics. Single player is much more challenging than MK but is done a race by race basis rather than league. There are 4 main type of power ups but you have 3 variations of each(power levels) that act differently. Keeping square pressed lets you do the 4th function of the weapon which is to drop it behind you as a mine or shot etc. Effectively like 16 different weapons when compare to a game like MK. Shield is done using boost bar but you need to build large chunks on boost bar to do that. Controls can be remapped if you like. Its different from say MK or SEGA Racing. Having said that it has its own feel and doesnt feel like a quick copy of MK like Sega Racing did. You have a boost meter you can fill by sliding which grants you boosts or a shield. Worth pointing out some stuff i never knew were in the game but the tracks get amazingly excellent. You have open style motorstorm type tracks to ridge racer type tracks. As well as split second elements with switches etc. to affect the scenery open shortcuts, block ways or routes or create hazzards etc. Its very well done! You even have modbots to wreak havoc. I am not barely half through as well lol. But the variety is amazing. Already i think nearly every MK track can be remade with whats unlocked. Do i see multiplayer lasting? Well i have only done 2 player splitscreen games which were great fun. Online has an xp system but was broken most of the time yesterday so i am only level 2. The real test for me is the weekend is if my more casual MK friends can get into it. It will take more adjustment than the average kart racer imo but it doesnt feel overwhelming like MKDD's double management at all. Loading is very long but you will live with it considering the game is fun. One massive advantage Modnation racers has is the track maker. Fresh tracks will always be made and some of the user made ones are already superb. single best thing about the game are the tracks. My project is to make a RR style track. Scenic but also abit challenging to drive. Track maker is easy btw compared to LBP but not as powerful, as in you cant make a calculator or fine tune to the same extent, but you can make very good kart racing tracks easily, just not much else. So far i havent unlocked much but its geting better and better so i am quite happy with it. There is alot to do and alot of fun tobe had.
tapedeck Posted May 23, 2010 Posted May 23, 2010 In regards to the load times being long, are we talking "with" the patch? In this regard I'll be very disappointed. I understand that load times are an integral part of disk based media but this title screams 'accessible' and the BETA load times totally killed the game for me.

Well its not been patched yet but the load times arent anywhere near the beta. Hence it being a beta. More like say Killzone 2. Long but hardly long enough to stop you playing. Plus the game is fun anyway. Between this and Split second for example its no contest. This puts Mario Kart to shame in many ways. MK has used the same format since the SNES. Its time for a shake up. Ganepark32 Posted May 28, 2010 Posted May 28, 2010 Plus the game is fun anyway. Between this and Split second for example its no contest. This puts Mario Kart to shame in many ways. MK has used the same format since the SNES. Its time for a shake up. I'll grant you that the game is fun, as I bought it today, but it really doesn't put Mario Kart to shame in any place. The karting isn't as robust, weapons aren't that great and the track designs that I've seen so far in the game aren't exactly spectacular in the way some of MK's track are. Granted, it's early days but I doubt there'll be any included track that makes me go wow or makes me constantly want to replay it. I'm not ragging on the game, before you comment Choze, I'm just merely stating you've blown the game way out of proportion by saying it puts MK to shame in many places when it doesn't really. In most, it comes close to matching MK and in others, it's lagging a little behind. It's a great game though and certainly much more enjoyable once you invest some time in the creation tools. The track editor is certainly a great tool and I've been having some fun with it. Not difficult to get to grips with and I've already got a WIP track uploaded to the servers for people to try out. If anyone is interested in trying it, I am looking for feedback on it. Not sure how to search for tracks as I haven't had time to look but basically it's called Seaside1 (just quickly gave it a crappy name as it's a WIP) and the creator is me, Ganepark32.
Cookyman Posted May 31, 2010 Posted May 31, 2010 (edited) Now this alone makes me want to get this! Edited June 1, 2010 by Cookyman
MATtheHAT Posted May 31, 2010 Posted May 31, 2010 (edited) I picked it up today, mainly because my Daughter was nagging all weekend for it. If you can look past extremely long load times, then its a fun kart racer. Not quite Mario Kart but fun none the less. I'll grant you that the game is fun, as I bought it today, but it really doesn't put Mario Kart to shame in any place. I'll have a search for your track now. EDIT: Can't seem to find it. I've looked at my friends list tracks, and also searched 'seaside1'. Edited May 31, 2010 by MATtheHAT Automerged Doublepost
Ganepark32 Posted June 1, 2010 Posted June 1, 2010 (edited) Yeh I took it down as I was messing about with it. I've made a few other things so I'll stick them all up on the servers later. Have to say I'm not really enjoying this much at all. I've given it a try but I just can't seem to like it. The track editor is fine but when it's the best bit of the package, it's a little disappointing I think. edit: Uploaded the two tracks that I feel are finished (Azure Marina and Alpine Fields) if anyone wants to try them. Azure Marina is a short track (36 sec flying lap) but I think it's pretty fun. Turn 3 will certainly throw a few people off :p. Alpine Fields is longer (about 1min) and a multi-part corner that hasn't quite worked out (although the last 2 or so turns on it do work as I'd hoped just not the whole thing).
