mcj metroid Posted June 4, 2008 Posted June 4, 2008 I thought now we are far enough into the wii's lifespan it's time to compare them. Now I know what you're thinking the wii is aimed at a much different market. Personally I much prefer the gamecube,Now It could have been because i was younger but the wii has esentially destroyed my interest in gaming. I still love the ds but I rarely play the wii and i;m not sure why.It has great games I would enjoy. I like to hear your points and see if I can agree with them. So do you like your wii as much as you did with your gamecube?
Ren of Heavens Posted June 4, 2008 Posted June 4, 2008 As it's only been 18 months we should compare with what GC had to offer in its first 18 months: Star Wars Rogue Leader: Rogue Squadron II Super Smash Bros. Melee Super Monkey Ball Pikmin Wave Race: Blue Storm Luigi's Mansion Metroid Prime Super Mario Sunshine Resident Evil Resident Evil 0 Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem TimeSplitters 2 Animal Crossing Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 & 4 Zelda: The Wind Waker Ikaruga Skies of Arcadia Legends I was definitely more excited at the Wii launch with a brand new Zelda and the exciting controller and whole new gameplay with Wii Sports. When it comes to first party support I would say they're about as good, but GC had significantly better 3rd party support. So judging by the first 18 months I would say GC was perhaps a bit better, but Wii will probably have a lot better support in its third, fourth and fifth year compared to GC.
Shino Posted June 4, 2008 Posted June 4, 2008 Personally, its the same. I was a much bigger fanboy back then and was much more excited with the cube release, but I play my Wii as regularly as I did my cube.
LazyBoy Posted June 4, 2008 Posted June 4, 2008 Personally, its the same. I was a much bigger fanboy back then and was much more excited with the cube release, but I play my Wii as regularly as I did my cube. Same pretty much.
Dyson Posted June 4, 2008 Posted June 4, 2008 Lol, how weird, I just told my mate yesterday how I thought I was more excited to own a Gamecube at the time than a Wii now, how bizarre.
Hellfire Posted June 4, 2008 Posted June 4, 2008 Too relative and too soon to say. I definitely got more bang for my buck faster and so far, the new iterations of Nintendo's IPs are my favorite games, so maybe. Pointless to say really. Also, this thread might not end well.
Chris the great Posted June 4, 2008 Posted June 4, 2008 im not sure, ive got a few issues with the wii, mainly that its all been a little easy, and we havnt had a good rpg yet. that said, the wii has great games, and use of the remote has been well handled.
Guest Jordan Posted June 4, 2008 Posted June 4, 2008 Both have had great games 18 months in... I honestly don't know however. I was a one console person back in 2003 and i'm not these days so its a little difficult to compare. I'm happy with the Wii, shame theres jack all out between now and whenever.
IMJ Posted June 4, 2008 Posted June 4, 2008 Hm, funny. I just had a similar thought just recently. I got both consoles on launch day and enjoyed both of them immensely. In hindsight, the Cube had some truly fine gems. Not just first party games, but also third party. I think the Wii is lacking a bit in that respect. But then again, when I had the Cube and was comparing it to the N64-era, I was finding the previous console better. So I guess im the type of person that starts to appreciate the console more afterwards. I bet 5 years from now, when we're playing the next console, I'll be thinking: I had immense fun with WiiSports, Galaxy etc. Hopefully, we've yet to see the best of Wii's lifecycle.
Heaven Posted June 4, 2008 Posted June 4, 2008 Gamecube until now. Maybe because it was the only console I had the past generation.
Columnar Posted June 4, 2008 Posted June 4, 2008 Definately love my GameCube more than my Wii which is a shame. I've even turned to the dark side and went with a PlayStation in this generation which is something I thought I would never do all because most of my favourite games have sequels on PS3 and not Wii.
Ren of Heavens Posted June 4, 2008 Posted June 4, 2008 Kind of ironic...despite Wii being the most successfull Nintendo console since NES many hardcore Nintendo gamers have for the first time bought another console (X360 or PS3).
Portlett Posted June 4, 2008 Posted June 4, 2008 I don't know really, I guess I like it around the same, maybe a bit more because of the online features
Jimbob Posted June 4, 2008 Posted June 4, 2008 It's a little hard to decide, but in some ways i still prefer the GC to the Wii only because there was better 3rd Party support in the first 18 months of GC life compared to Wii life atm. The whole motion sensor fad as it were is starting to wear off which i think is putting many people into a decision to buy another console, and with Ubisofts lineup of games for Wii i don't blame them
Shino Posted June 4, 2008 Posted June 4, 2008 In good old The3rdChildren fashion: Nostalgia plays tricks with all of us.
Blue_Ninja0 Posted June 4, 2008 Posted June 4, 2008 ^ Very true. I was more excited during the launch of the Cube than the Wii, but now that the Wii has some games like Mario Galaxy and Smash I'd say it's more or less the same. With that said, the N64 was the one I enjoyed the most, by far.
The Bard Posted June 4, 2008 Posted June 4, 2008 Around this time in the Cube's life I loved these games: Waverace: Blue Storm Star Wars Rebel Strike: Rogue Leader 2 Pikmin Resident Evil Luigi's Mansion Super Smash Bros: Melee (which I still maintain is superior to Brawl) Timesplitters 2 Zelda: Wind Waker Metroid Prime Splinter Cell Prince of Persia: Sands of Time (Not sure if this was out at the time actually) Tony Hawks 4 (back when the series was still kickass) Burnout 2 Mario Sunshine With the Wii, the only games I've really liked so far are MP3: Corruption Twilight Princess Mario Galaxy Zakk And Wiki Maybe I've become more picky, or maybe it's the fact that there are far better games available on the 360, but the Gamecube had much better games for it's time than the Wii, and funnily enough, I prefered the Gamecube iterations of Nintendo's titles (apart from Mario, obviously). To be fair, maybe I'm being a bit harsh on Nintendo, they tried something new with the Wii, and are still trying to find their feet, but I somehow still have faith that we will see some good stuff on the Wii eventually. There was also the factor of the Cube being an incredibly powerful machine at the time, more so than the market leader and was more than able to compete. With Wii, it seems that we're seeing games from the last generation, but with the added novelty of motion control (which is amazing some of the time, and badly implemented most of the time)
Konfucius Posted June 4, 2008 Posted June 4, 2008 I think I play the Wii as much as I did the GC, though in the actual sense of liking the console I prefer the GC, maybe out of nostalgia but more probable because I associate Nintendo's politics with the consoles and I don't like their casual stance.
McPhee Posted June 4, 2008 Posted June 4, 2008 The GC for me. Rogue Squadron 2, Smash Bros Melee, Timesplitters 2 and Skies Of Arcadia: Legends are 4 of my favourite games of all time. There were other enjoyable titles too, Eternal Darkness, Pikmin, Wave Race, Luigi's Mansion, Tony Hawk 3 & 4, Wind Waker, Metroid Prime and Mario Sunshine also ate up hours of my life. Compare this to the Wii and there's not really anything that has kept my interest. Ghost Squad is fun for a quick blast, Fire Emblem was good (although i got bored about half way through and i'm yet to pick it up again), Brawl was OK and Zelda: TP is pretty much on a par with the other Zelda games in my book (never really been a big Zelda fan). Having said that though i've only played 4 Wii games + Wii Sports so i can't really judge. While i don't see it topping the Gamecube i do have high expectations for Galaxy and Prime 3 (when i get around to playing them).
Pit-Jr Posted June 4, 2008 Posted June 4, 2008 I like them both, but i have to give the edge to the Wii since its plays GC and PS2 games Both have really good games, really good controllers, and both are tragically underexploited
Hellfire Posted June 4, 2008 Posted June 4, 2008 Bard I don't think it has anything to do with being picky, the Wii is an odd console and a move in a different direction, it's natural that a lot people feel like you do. We have to say how it pans out in the end :P
brynpearson Posted June 4, 2008 Posted June 4, 2008 the wii only because of the virtual console and pro evo. it saves having to have all those machines out/or buy to play so many different games. otherwise it would be the GC.
M-PG71C Posted June 4, 2008 Posted June 4, 2008 Wii by far, I loved my GameCube and all but I have recieved far more enjoyment out of my Wii. Metroid Prime 3, Zelda Twilight Princess, Mario Galaxy, ExciteTruck, MoH: Heroes 2, Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn, Mario Kart, Smash Bros Brawl, the list goes on both third party and first party. Oh, and the VC is made of win especially as a university student. I can't exactly drag my systems to my dorm, they would take up too much room.
DomJcg Posted June 4, 2008 Posted June 4, 2008 Well, i never had a GC, i had the pr0 ps2! I gotta say, the times i have played the GC i played SSBM RESI4 WW MP1 So i kinda feel i got the best on offer from the gamecube, on the other hand, i never really saw the specialness of the games i had played, until i went back to play them on the wii. I was/am a one console guy, i looked at the Gamecube as "sure, i slightly more powerful console" but considering the release dates of the consoles, it was to be expected. Still i stuck with my ps2 and i'm glad i did, now i know i didn't get the best of the ps2 games, but the ones i did get still take me back to them (the PoP series, SOTC, Tekken, ZOE). But with the wii, well i was/am disappointed with Galaxy (yeh yeh flame etc) metroid wowed me, Twilight Princess was a great RPG (prefer FF though) and No More Heroes is hard =] I never buy many games, so i tend to look for ones that wow me. I haven't seen many on the Wii, which brings me onto my next point. The Wii, as it's been pointed out, is a step in a different direction, i didn't see brain academy or fitness things on any other console, ever. The wii has and always will be, different, whereas the Gamecube was about bringing the last generation uptodate, the Wii is moving into a new generation of it's own, to compare is silly. fin
