weeyellowbloke Posted June 2, 2008 Posted June 2, 2008 Off the top of my head you've got Kilmacoo in Wicklow, Ireland and Needless Alley in Birmingham (which to be fair is a bit of a needless alley). Also at work today we had to phone companies at an industrial estate in Penzance ironically called Working-In-Vain.
Jonnas Posted June 2, 2008 Posted June 2, 2008 "Puta que pariu" means something like Son of a Bitch, and its a neighbourhood in Brazil. God, of all the town/neighbourhood names I've seen, that's the most explicit one. And I don't think there's a similar English equivalent. And after all that's been said...I guess "Cu do Lobo" (Wolf's Ass) is the only one I can remember, but I'm not even sure it really exists. Although I know a city called Sanguedo, which basically means "Blood Bath". Faro is pretty ridiculous, too, knowing what it means.
Oxigen_Waste Posted June 2, 2008 Author Posted June 2, 2008 So... nobody else thinks Liverpool is funny as fuck?
weeyellowbloke Posted June 2, 2008 Posted June 2, 2008 Near me as well. Just remembered Gannow, also in Birmingham. It's not rude as such, but just weird and makes me smile when I see a bus heading that way.
Dante Posted June 2, 2008 Posted June 2, 2008 So... nobody else thinks Liverpool is funny as fuck? The name Liverpool isnt funny as fuck!
Hellfire Posted June 2, 2008 Posted June 2, 2008 But its a pool of livers! Exactly! How's that not funny?
Raining_again Posted June 2, 2008 Posted June 2, 2008 Were you going to Portrush I take it? Ballybogey always reminds me of Portrush!
Oxigen_Waste Posted June 2, 2008 Author Posted June 2, 2008 The name Liverpool isnt funny as fuck! I bet you wouldn't say that if you actually saw a pool full of livers.
Zell Posted June 2, 2008 Posted June 2, 2008 I've been in the Devil's Arse! As Ramar said, there's a village called Cockenhoe near here. I have a photo of my somewhere by a street sign in the Highlands somewhere. Road's name? Gay Lane Terrace. People always find "Berliner" (as in a person from Berlin) funny, once they find in German, "Berliner" means "doughnut". Personally, I find Essen (a city in Germany) funnier. Why? "Essen" is Germany for "ate". Well, I thought it was funny... Actually, Essen (with a capital letter) means food. And essen (without a capital) means "to eat". So it's still fairly funny anyway, I bet they have some good restaurants. Didn't JFK go to Berlin and in a speech he said "Ich bin ein Berliner"? Made quite a few Germans laugh.
Raining_again Posted June 2, 2008 Posted June 2, 2008 There's a place called Trailcock Road in Carrickfergus. xD Always brings up horrific mental images when I come across it in work.
Dannyboy-the-Dane Posted June 2, 2008 Posted June 2, 2008 Aalborg, we have many more fun place names in Denmark! Not all of them are grammatically correct, but still. "Lem", which means "penis" (albeit a politically correct term) "Tarm", which means "intestine" "Thisted", which means "pee place" when spoken out loud (not the way it's spelled) "Tisvilde", which roughly means "pee wild"
Oxigen_Waste Posted June 2, 2008 Author Posted June 2, 2008 So at the end of the day I conclude we Portuguese are the ones with the funniest names. Good.
The fish Posted June 2, 2008 Posted June 2, 2008 Actually, Essen (with a capital letter) means food. And essen (without a capital) means "to eat". So it's still fairly funny anyway, I bet they have some good restaurants. Didn't JFK go to Berlin and in a speech he said "Ich bin ein Berliner"? Made quite a few Germans laugh. Grammar nazi... He should have said "Ich bin Berliner", unless he thought he was a tasty snack. No one has mentioned Groupecunt Lane in London yet...
Emasher Posted June 2, 2008 Posted June 2, 2008 The old name for the Canadian city Regina was Pile-O-Bones. I once saw a footwear store that was called "Athlete's Foot".
Falcon_BlizZACK Posted June 2, 2008 Posted June 2, 2008 But its a pool of livers! LOL, now you put it like that - its funny (not as fuck however).
Hellfire Posted June 2, 2008 Posted June 2, 2008 So at the end of the day I conclude we Portuguese are the ones with the funniest names. Good. We are awesome.
Cube Posted June 2, 2008 Posted June 2, 2008 But the name suits the place. A pool's worth of livers are ruined each day form the amount of alcohol consumed there.
gaggle64 Posted June 2, 2008 Posted June 2, 2008 Am I the only person who watched LoTR and couldn't help but detect something vaguely Freudian about "The Crack of Doom"
Jonnas Posted June 2, 2008 Posted June 2, 2008 We are awesome. This is true in so many ways it's scary. But I don't remember any other dumb names. Mafamude, Gulpilhares and Cinfães are silly, but they don't mean anything.
The Bard Posted June 3, 2008 Posted June 3, 2008 Didn't JFK go to Berlin and in a speech he said "Ich bin ein Berliner"? Made quite a few Germans laugh. Haha, yeah. Eddie Izzard does a highlarious bit on that in his stand up.
