Mario Kart:double dash

I like creating these thread to discuss how we now feel about the games we once loved.

But i never really took to this game. Played it again today and after getting so used to mario Kart DS i almost lost. This game could have been so much more. I still want a story mode.

i liked the double character idea and yes there was a lot of characters but i would choose more tracks anyday

What do ye think of this one compared to the rest

did anyone play it with LAN. I only played it a couple of times though do own it somewhere. DS is much better. Best racer on the cube was burnout. I liked cel damage too..... probably more than mario kart. I remember playing that loads but that was way back when games were expensive and I had few.

At first i found it a bit meh, but the more i played it, the more it grew on me until eventually i totally loved it (except the desert level, that's still the zenith of evil).

Now i wish more cart racers have the 2 player option - love the strategic element of choosing a good combo of characters for their special weapon's sake (i like using birdo + toadette for the combo of mushroom boosts & homing eggs) and being able to swap characters to store things like boosts for the right moment.

I also liked that the championships could be played through & unlocked in 2 player split screen mode, rather than only allowing you to do individual races on tracks you've already completed as single player.

I loved this game, but it'll always take the third spot for me.

Mario Kart on the SNES was the best, it was just superb, and I played it to death.

64 was superb and I played countless 4 player games with my mates.

But although double dash was great, I just never played it as much as the other two, as I live on my own and my mates aren't really into gaming now.

I'm actually quite disappointed with Mario Kart DD. The two player option was a lot of fun - especially if you played single-player coop but I missed the classic feeling of the other Mario Karts.

I also didn't like the art style. It looked too light hearted - childish almost.

I also think Nintendo should have never tinkered with the basic Mario Kart formula and for me that includes the Karts.

..the very first time I played it was actually a multiplayer game with my friend.. and I was a bit disappointed.. for some reason just couldn't really seem to see where I was going.. but after a few races it started to click with me and I really did enjoy it, despite not being very fond of some of the tracks..

I'm hoping Mario Kart Wii is something special.. and that you can have an online GP style mode with 8 players :yay:

..but back to Double Dash, the Battle Mode was horrendous

I really hate this game. People find me strange for this reason, but after reading this thread I'm obviously not the only one (allthough I may take my hate for MK DD to a new level). If it didn't come with the Cube, I wouldn't own this game. After reading reviews, I already thought it was pretty bad, then I get the game for free, and it still manages to disappoint me. Everything's wrong, the tracks (that baby mario & luigi track or whatever, is the most stupid track I've ever seen), the power-ups (they do the exact opposite of what you'd expect from previous versions), and probably most important, the controls suck. They absolutely don't feel as tight as MK 64. Powerslides feel slippery (?), and I miss jumping..

Oh and the multiplayer battle arenas suck too. I think I mentioned everything.

My copy will never see the inside of my Cube again. I should've bought that Resident Evil package instead.

I still have to play the DS version though, it seems to be pretty good, and I probably will still buy it someday.

The same here...

The Baby track is all about how you take the corners.

The power ups do the same as previous games, some specials are a bit naff, but how the hell do they do the opposite?

The MK64 'controls' are just stiff

Powerslides are slippery, but that's to make it easier to take corners with them (the boost is shit though)

Jumping is hardly used in Mario Kart anyway (CTR FTW!!!)

Oh man, this game was god awful.

apart from king boo and the boo pipes; that was the highlight of the game for me.

the tracks needed more tracks and more short cuts and a faster pace to be a good mario kart game. with double characters as well it was a bit too colourful and confusing

Yeah...but only DS has the right amount of shortcuts really....Except it got rid of that Yoshi Circuit one:shakehead

the one where you boost off the edge?

well, for one that was hard to actually do without something going wrong

and two it wasn much of a shortcut anyway.

if you used the mushroom for going round a bend or on a straight then youd be about equal on time anyway. you can still go over the hill near the beginning at least.

on topic: i dont play sims anymore, and i hardly played it anyway.

Maybe "exact opposite" is slightly exaggerated, but they don't behave quite the same as previous versions. Not being able to "hold" a banana, single shield, or fake box is a loss, it is a much used tactic. Personally I was quite fond af the tripple shield shells too. And I hope I remember this correctly, I've played this game only 3 times, but the blue shield doesn't follow the road anymore (only hitting the player in first position). Same goes for the red shells, they also don't follow the road anymore if you are the in first position (potentially hitting players behind you, or even yourself..). And there was something else about the red shells, but I can't remember exactly.

Also I don't like the boosts.. The seem out of place in Mario Kart to me. And maybe it's just me then, but powersliding (after a jump..) throught corners in MK 64 feels more natural to me, and much easier, while in MK DD, I can hardly keep my cart on the track.

Nah, blue shells have only ever hit the person in first place (or other people in the blast area). I think you may be confusing yourself with the item in crash team racing that follows the road and hits everybody in its way and the person in first

The Mario Kart 64 Blue Shell?

Anyway:

Diddy Kong Racing > Mario Kart 64

Konami Krazy Racers > Mario Kart: SS

Diddy Kong Racing DS > Mario Kart DS.

IMO.

I don't think there was a GC kart racer that beat DD (from what I've heard, CTTR was rubbish)

I've never played CTR but I find it VERY had to believe that it would be better than Mario Kart.

It s everythin mario kart should be.it has a long one player where you explore different worlds. it had 22 tracks which at the time was more than any mario kart.it had a much much better battle mode.no stupid bolloons or anything. You could fully adjust what items you want there and one you didnt.

i think the powerups were more fair. the shortcuts are excellent and really take practice to find out. the game is more challanging than the simple mario karts.best controls in a kart game until mario kart ds. Arguably had better graphics than mario kart 64. it was certainly excellent for ps1. Had no annoying voice overs like HI IM DAISY.

mario kart is what i call an overrated series. Nintendo never seem to surprise us with extras anymore like games like super mario deluxe for the gameboy. They seem to give us what they think is enough for us... DD was too short and 16 tracks is pathetic
