Dyson Posted September 6, 2006 Posted September 6, 2006 In my opinion, everything about the Wii is going great so far. Except one thing - the online service. I really don't like the way it's going, with reports that only 1st-party games will be able to use the service, and of course the worst thing about it: Friends codes. I understand that it'll a free service, but whenever I think of the Wii this is the only thing that lets me down. Do you think we can see Nintendo going back on their Friends Code system, and maybe just maybe utilizing something a lot more conventional, easier and conveniant such as lobbies? Thanks Dyson
blender Posted September 6, 2006 Posted September 6, 2006 i use to have a board game called downfall. you had to move plastic bits down by turning knobs. I preferred connect 4 though. However, neither had anything to do with nintendo ... but they do sound they should know?
xernobyl Posted September 6, 2006 Posted September 6, 2006 lol The system (friend codes) is not that bad, apart from the only thing you can do with someone is play. Isn't that what Wii is for?
raven_blade2006 Posted September 7, 2006 Posted September 7, 2006 Lets wait and see what they have in store for online. There is way too much speculation and not enough truth. the 14th and 15th should provide some answers.
DiemetriX Posted September 7, 2006 Posted September 7, 2006 Lets wait and see what they have in store for online. There is way too much speculation and not enough truth. QFT. Altough I dont think they will tell us about it soon.
mike-zim Posted September 7, 2006 Posted September 7, 2006 i recon that it will be a friends code but tied to the hardware not software. so each Wii will have its own friends code. which would be alot better dont you think? and why is it only 1st party game that will use online??? all game will have the option. it is whether or not they get charged for.
Mundi Posted September 7, 2006 Posted September 7, 2006 Isn´t the online service available after the Wii launch? a couple months later
Yoochem Posted September 7, 2006 Posted September 7, 2006 I heard that 3rd parties can use the online service as from 2007. Dunno why though, and I'm not even a 100% sure it's true. As to the friend codes, I'm not really bothered by it, though I'd still prefer a pc-like server browser. And many titles (including the 3rd party ones!) have already anounced an online mode. And on top of that, we also have virtual console, another great online feature. All in all I think the online service is gonna be ok.
fex Posted September 7, 2006 Posted September 7, 2006 (edited) I wouldn't mine if they used friend codes, but each wii had its own friend code, rather than having individual games with individual friends, it just gets messy. I'd like to see what game my friend is playing, so that i can join him, rather than txting back and fourth a million times to make sure we search at the same time to find each other. I know its a free service, but dont make it a chore for us! Xbox Live rocks. ________ WEED VAPORIZERS Edited April 28, 2011 by fex
raven_blade2006 Posted September 7, 2006 Posted September 7, 2006 Nintendo has to come clean on the 14th and 15th about most of these details. Launch is not too far away and we really need to know more information. With the PS3's delay they have a great opportunity to establish a significant userbase in Europe.
BlueStar Posted September 7, 2006 Posted September 7, 2006 Don't really care myself because I'm completely bored of online gaming - but I can see how it might put some people off.
glucoseaddict Posted September 7, 2006 Posted September 7, 2006 That is a class game - played it loads when I was younger! I hate the online set up that Nintendo have for the DS, it's just plain annoying. But if they change it for the Wii so that there is one 'friend code' per system, you can see what your friends are playin and can send messages to your friends - I'd be well happy! Never played on Live but am used to online PC multiplayer setups so I'm hopin they improve it vastly over their DS offering, which I'm sure they will!
Pit-Jr Posted September 7, 2006 Posted September 7, 2006 I think Wii's only downfall is that im not playing Zelda on it right this very minute. Im not bothered by the lack of laser-killing DVD playback and theres more then enough games i want to buy at launch. Release the damn thing!
*Dalco* Posted September 7, 2006 Posted September 7, 2006 the online on the Wii will be very basic and no way near what x-box live is due to the fact the 360 requires the hardrive to get online (though i may be wrong about the 360 needing the hardrive for live)
Pestneb Posted September 7, 2006 Posted September 7, 2006 i recon that it will be a friends code but tied to the hardware not software. so each Wii will have its own friends code. which would be alot better dont you think? and why is it only 1st party game that will use online??? all game will have the option. it is whether or not they get charged for. I agree, it makes more sense, data isn't stored on the discs themselves, so it makes sense for friend codes to be tied to the hardware. I don't see why a user would need to have a friend code tied to individual software, it makes a little sense with the DS, where data is stored largely on the cart itself, but not on the Wii.
punchcard progamer Posted September 7, 2006 Posted September 7, 2006 the online on the Wii will be very basic and no way near what x-box live is due to the fact the 360 requires the hardrive to get online (though i may be wrong about the 360 needing the hardrive for live) The Wii has sd cards which can act as a substitute for a hdd. However, they will of course not store as much as a hdd. But also remember, game demos is smaller than on 360 & PS3 because of SD. And videos, is it required to store them forever? you can either stream, or download watch & delete. Sad thing is, the online component isn't fully exposed to third party developers yet.
Hellfire Posted September 7, 2006 Posted September 7, 2006 So basically you dislike things that you don't know about. Lovely. Anyway, I hope they get rid of those hideous friend codes.
Zell Posted September 7, 2006 Posted September 7, 2006 We hardly know anything yet so no-one should label it a "downfall".
DCK Posted September 7, 2006 Posted September 7, 2006 Online gaming can't be a downfall, especially not for the audience the Wii is trying to aim for. It'll be a terrible shame if they cock it up though.
Cube Posted September 7, 2006 Posted September 7, 2006 Except one thing - the online service. I really don't like the way it's going, with reports that only 1st-party games will be able to use the service, and of course the worst thing about it: Friends codes. Why? Just think of a friend code as an Xbox Live Gamer tag, but with a code instead - plus you can have whatever name you wish. System Based friend codes is almost definite in my opinion, as each system will have its own code for the DRM for VC games...this will probably be used for the friend code, too.
Goron_3 Posted September 7, 2006 Posted September 7, 2006 We hardly know anything yet so no-one should label it a "downfall". QFT. You speak some wise words there Zell
Charlie Posted September 7, 2006 Posted September 7, 2006 Nintendo have yet to confirm whether it will be just one friend code or a friend code for every single game.
