I think we could do with all the stuff that we don't yet know about the Wii, so here goes (I'll keep this post updated)

General

  • Price
    - Nintendo have said that it will be less than $200. This means that Wii will probably cost £150 (or less) in the UK.
  • Release Date
    - It seems likely that Wii will be released before the PS3, from stuff that Nintendo have said, and leaked information
  • Contents of box
    - We still don't know what we actually get in the box. It seems likely that we'll get: Wii console, power cable, AV cable (specifics unknown, probably the same as the GameCube), Wiimote and Nunchuck. It also seems likely that a game, probably Wii Sports, will be included in/with the console - it will make it easier for non-gamers as they can just get the box, take it home and play without having to get anything extra.

Controllers

  • Battery life with/without attachments - We don't know what impact different attachments will have on the battery life. Edit:: battery will be around 40 hours on its own, and 30 with the nunchuck[/b]
  • Back of classic controller - what are those "clips" for?
  • Shotgun - how will it mimic a light gun properly? Or will it just work the same as the wiimote

Online

  • Friend Codes - Will they be system specific, or game specific?
  • Patches/Expansions - Will developers be able to put patches and expansions online for Wii games? Edit: Patches can be made available online
  • Demos - How will (if) online demos be provided - download or stream?
  • Media - Will game media (movies/music) downloads be available online, and if so, will they be transferable to PC?
  • Virtual Console - We don't yet know specifics about things like: Will framerates be improved? Will games be buy then download once, or buy once then download as many times as you like? What about security - how will they stop people sending each other VC games, as they can be stored on removable storage devices? The only way i can think of stopping this, is if Nintendo linked the download with the consoles friend code (like Steam), they could also allow multiple downloads this way
  • Typing - How will typing be done for the browser? There will probably be an on-screen keyboard (using either Wiimote as cursor, with optional use of the D-pad), will there be a Wii-specific keyboard/mouse? Will USB keyboards/mice work?
  • Instant Messaging - Rumored, will this be available on the Wii, also how will communication be handled online?

Other

  • DVD addon - How much will it cost? Where will it go? - It will probably be around £20, and will probably go on one of the ports on the bottom of the console (when in base)

Anything else?

I'm sure they said 40 hours battery life with the wiimote+nunchuck....

Can anyone confirm this? It was in the thing where they told us about the 8kb memory in it...

They said in the conference that you can download updates for games with WiiConnect24.

And finally, didn't they say under $250 and then just recently under 250 euros?

The battery has 30 hours of juice with the Wiimote and Nunchuck, and 40 hours just with the Wiimote, as I remember it.

Developers will be able to patches online, as that is what Connect 24 is for.

You get home and a little light is blinking telling you you have new content. When content is released, patches come with it.

I have heard that to console features an ethernet socket on the back, but I have also heard that it doesn't and that you require some sort of adapter...

Sorry for asking a dumb question but has it been said if the Wiimote takes normal batterys or does it recharge?

I'm almost certain it's a rechargable one.

From Wikipedia: "Ports and peripheral capabilities:

Up to four Wii Remote controllers (connected wirelessly via Bluetooth)

One SD memory card slot

Two USB 2.0 ports

One Sensor Bar port

Four Nintendo GameCube controller ports

Two Nintendo GameCube memory card ports

Compatible with optional USB 2.0 to Ethernet LAN adaptor"

Meh, but it at least it's there to be had...

2 AA batteries, miles better than having a rechargeable one (if you get 4 rechargeable AA batteries), as it will mean that you can simply swap batteries when they run out of juice - it would be annoying if you had to stop playing just to charge up the controller)

hoep they done fleece us for rechargable batteries and charge kits like M$ have done with the 360 *grumble grumble*

hello 360 play and charge kit! -when it starts running out of juive just stick on end into the usb port and one into the controller and BZZZZZT it works still!

dont think thats applicable to the Wii though since the 'usb' like port at the bottom of the 'mote will be occupied by the nunchuck addon.

From Wikipedia: "The Wii Remote features 6KB of non-volatile memory. It can run up to 60 hours using only the accelerometer function with two alkaline AA batteries and up to 30 hours when using the precision aim. The buttons on the controller are digital and include a D-pad, A, B, 1, 2, -, +, Home and Power buttons as well as a SYNCHRO button located underneath the battery cover."

Oh, and to confim what I quoted earlier about the USB to ethernet adapter: "An optional USB adapter planned for release will provide network connectivity via wired Ethernet."

I believe the friend codes system was confirmed to be the same as in DS....

Well what I read was that it was like the DS, except it was a friend code per sytem, not per game.

nice informative post there cube for the peeps not in the know.

Main thing i want to know about is the virtual console and how many retro games will be available to buy on launch

I really hope the friend codes are system based, they really should be considering that the Wii is way more powerful than the DS.

Also, a system-specific friend code would make it much easier for:

- Nintendo to control use of VC games

- A way to store (online) information on what games you have (for downloading automatic updates)

- Just make the whole online experience easier, plus allow them to have better features (such as telling you what online game your friends are currently playing).

A system-specific friend code makes miles more sense on a home console than a game-specific one.

There's another reason : if you're playing something like Wii sports - tennis, or Warioware, or another game that promotes excessive movement, then you don't want the controller "on a leash". Then you will be glad that the controller uses normal batteries.

The controller is not like the xbox controller, where you can just sit still, absolutely no movement aside from your thumbs. That's an important reason that the Wiimote should always be wireless.

I doubt a game will come will the console, Another thing we don't know is if the classic controller will come with the console as this will be needed to play SNES and N64 games, surly nintendo can not expect people to buy something extra to play one of the biggest features of the console.

Also will the classic controller be compatible with Gamecube games as I doubt nintendo will continue to make cube controllers and sell 2 alternate controlers for Wii.

do we know the launch titles yet?

Not all of them, but heres a link to a "tentative" list courtesy of a random contributor.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wii

Can give you an idea on what to expect early on with games for Wii. There could be a chance that not every single game that will indeed launch is on that list.

Hey Cube, one thing you left out, what colors will be available for Wii, I don't think its actually been confirmed whether it will launch in white, black, both or some other random color all together.

Its so close to impossible that its true, but I want to believe it!!!!

...seriously how much trouble must have someone gone to to make that seem legit?! It would have taken forever!
